I'm trying to determine which item slot should be upgraded to 5* first.
I currently have the following (all 4*)
Ash tail coat/hat (planning on upgrading to Vog)
Faust
Avenger
Dark thorn blade
Dark thorn shield
Which slot to update to 5* first?

Are you running JK or FSC?
If
Are you running JK or FSC?
If running JK get your BTS first.
If running FSC... get a Vog piece first.
Really if you are running anything but FSC I think the BTS is a good pick for you next because it will buff all 3 blades.
Usually I'd say weapons first, but this is a special case.
I. Dark Thorn Shield
a. better shield - very important
b. improves all swords in one upgrade
II. Avenger
III. Vog Set -> then go FSC :D
IV. Dark Thorn -> 4* version still tears up Tier 3
V. Faust -> shadow not as useful beyond JK IMO
