Hullo !

I've recently started playing to this game, and I still have a few questions even after reading the wiki.

First, what gear should I craft/get ? I'm aiming for Calibur/cobalt armor and then improve these, are they viable on the long-term ? Same question for shield.

For guns, I'm hesitating between Autogun and Blaster - knowing that Autogun stops you but deals more damage - which one should be picked ?

As for energy, when I buy energy from the energy depot, is it mist or EC ?

Thanks.

First, Calibur. If you carry

First, Calibur. If you carry only one sword, it is the sword to go. It is considered the best all-around sword, due to its awesome charge attack. If you use several swords, you may want to look at non-normal damage types.

Cobalt armor doesn't have any real point, other than being all-around. For a swordsman, Wolver is advised due to the damage bonus and the fact that it upgrades to Vog Cub, a very popular end game armor. You have other options like Magic armor (which evolves in Divine, the helm is popular too).

As for guns, perhaps you didn't noticed yet, but most monsters you want to use a gun against, as a swordsman (i assume you are one) are weak or neutral to elemental. That's why an elemental gun is advised. You can buy an alchemer right now, or run some twins run for a pulsar (but it may be a while before you have it). Else, Blaster can make a decent gun if you want to go for a pulsar and don't like alchemer (2 shot clips and ricochet can be annoying). Don't go with Autogun right now. It's hard to use and it evolves into piercing or normal, both are not that good for a side-arm most of the time.

The energy you buy or trade anywhere is always Crystal Energy. You can't buy, sell or trade Mist Energy.

Thank you for your clear and complete answers !

One last though - for the shield. Is the Defender worth the shot ?

Also, I've looked up the Wolver set a bit - even though the stats are nice, the armor is not really my style. Even though it may appear stupid, I care nearly as much for the look than for the stats. I'm more of a plate armor player.

The Defender isn't

The Defender isn't particulary worth it. Piercing is just not the most common damage type, and fairly easy to avoid. The most popular shield is Owlite, and it is for a reason. If you want a Piercing defense shield, you may look at Bristing Buckler (you'll need 10 Snarby tokens), which is a little weaker than Defender, but have a nice Sword bonus damage. It is also a popular shield (less than Owlite though).

If you want to choose your armor based on the look, I can't really advise you anything. It will make a little difference, but you can definitely explore all the game with a sub-optimal armor. Or you can have an optimal armor and another just for costum, but it will require more money to do the costum part.

Talking of guns - I might

Talking of guns - I might require a few tips.

I'm mostly playing duo with a friend - so far we've both been sword-users but it seems he'll turn towards bombs/guns. Which one should he pick ?

For my part, I'll go Wolver - but craft Cobalt and keep it for the look.

It doesn't matter if he goes

It doesn't matter if he goes guns or bombs. He needs to pick the one that will make him happy to use. FYI, I believe the learning curve is a bit steeper for Bombing than it is for Gunslinging, but that is just my opinion.

Though, between the two of you, you guys would be better off if at least one of you had an Elemental or at least a Normal gun. Bombers in general (I'm sure veteran bombers would prove this false) bombers are weaker vs gun puppies, at least novice bombers. So it would be good to have a Polaris, Alchemer, or a Blaster to deal with ranged constructs.

An Elemental Alchemer would be an cheap way grab one quick (Prismtech, Cyrotech, Voltech, Firotech lines). I love my Valiance, but I solo a ton and like my sidearm to work on anything. For a duo I think you would be better off with an elemental gun for constructs (I'm working on taking Pulsar to take Polaris right now).

Instead of creating a new

Instead of creating a new topic, I guess I'll just necro this one

I've kept playing Spiral Knights, and I still enjoy the game. I've started playing in T2 and have beat the JK once (didn't manage to to do it twice though).

I currently have a wolver cap, dusker coat, bristling buckler, owlite shield, tempered calibur and blaster. I used the owlite shield a little, but I didn't like it since Alpha Wolvers slaughtered me (still with the buckler, but a little less).

I plan to go Vog/Skolver, Thorn shield, Leviathan and Valiance. However, I still don't know which of the Vog/Skolver to pick. I know, I still have time to chose, but I'd like to know sooner.

Here's a good costume if you

Here's a good costume if you ever want something unique: Fused Demo suit+Brute Jelly Helm=Spaceman Knight. Alternatively, the authentic mewkat costume works well. Mewkat Astronaut FTW.

It doesn't matter which piece

It doesn't matter which piece of armor for vog/skolver you pick, they should have the exact same stats.

I'd also suggest stocking up on other swords, such as the Divine Avenger, Gran Faust, or any of the Brandish lines (bar Cautery).
Pick up a Snarble Barb or a Flourish line if you're having trouble with alphas- does a great job of tearing them to shreds.

hey

if you dont like wolver, you could always save a little more and get some drake, thatll provide you with elemental defence as well.
and if you have problems with devilites, the angelic set will do great

One piece of advice I learned

One piece of advice I learned the hard way about Alpha Wolvers is that you just can't let them bite you. 3 bits from them will go through pretty much any shield (or at least the ones I've tried [Gray Owlite, Crest of Almire, Barb Thorn Shield, 4* Jelly and Skelly]), so the best way to deal with them is to let them do their three bits, then immediately run in and try to do a combo with your sword so you knock them down. Tricker in T3, but it works well in T2/T1. Failing that, I find that when you're in a team, the Magnus guns--or at least the Callahan line, since I haven't used Iron Slug--help a lot in wolver fights. Not too good when you solo, since the gun forces you to stand still and wolvers usually come in packs, but when you're partying, it works well. 'Course, Magnus doesn't knock down Alphas, but at least now you can hit them while they're bitting instead of waiting it out.

with the assumption you are

with the assumption you are going to keep advancing in the game

upgrade to vog cub set, because FSC is very firey and some elemental damage.
skolver has the 'same' stats, but piercing and freeze resist is less useful than elemental and fire resistances

with alpha wolvers, it's more important to either run away when they are telegraphing their attack, or hit them hard enough to cancel their attack.
good use of the levi charge should be enough.

i have a whole set of shields, and I can tell you now the one I prefer most is the volcanic plate shield. and I was highly disappointed with the grey owlite shield.
