I fail to see the point in them.
I'd explain why, but it's obvious.

Is it possible to mail stuff to your main character?
You would have more mist to build up, meaning more subtown runs for recipes, which you can then mail to your main.
As a total noob I could easily get 2 other toons in cheap wolver gear, cutters, plate shields and then i'd multiply my dungeoning output 3x. Then at the end of the day I could just trade all my loot to a friend (or another account registered to another of my e-mails) then to my main. While I doubt that's the reason for being able to have three characters, it's a use for it.
Clearly what you view to be "obvious" is not so obvious.
It is possible to mail things between characters on the same account. HOWEVER, multiple characters on the same account share both ME and CE, so you do NOT get more subtown runs etc.
A paid account and a free account on the same computer do NOT share ME or CE, as they have separate usernames, passwords, characters etc.
I personally like having more than one character on an account because it means I can play without having to listen to my guild chat. (Sorry guys, sometimes I just gotta be on my own.)
[redacted] Providence said it clearer than I did.
Again, in the preview event, I used the slots to try different things out from colour, to name, to different alchemy paths and fighting styles (one slot used fast blades and guns, another specifically used heavy blades, and the third was a bomber)
Alternative purposes that I HAVEN'T used them for:
*Making friends in the rescue camp (could be fun playing with randoms and giving advice)
*Different color schemes as mentioned above
*Multi guilding lol (But I know there would be problems with that)
I've actually used a character slot to talk to newbies in Rescue Camp--I sent that character the Skelly Set, so I would stand out more.
So I guess it's not common knowledge ME/CE is shared between both characters AND accounts, unless you pay cash on one of those accounts once.
Well, the more you know...
You have multiple slots simply to allow you to have 'alts.' As someone already mentioned, sometimes you want to join multiple guilds.
Personal color cannot be changed. Some people want different appearances.
