Is there any way to buy energy not via steam ? It's terribly uneffective, and I've heard you can buy via mobile phone - thing hard to do with steam.

Click the My Account link at
Click the My Account link at the top of the page, the side of that has a "Get Energy Now!" ad that will go directly through Paypal, or other sources. I haven't done it yet myself, but I don't see why that wouldn't work. I don't really want to buy the Steam points either.
Edit: This does indeed work, I used Paypal, CE was available immediately.

CE "market" tab

I am having difficulty with buying although I can trade for crystal energy just fine. So what exactly is the "market" tab for? I know you can post offers to buy and sell but haw you acquire the stuff is confusing.

Its for buying 100 CE if you dontt have money
You can buy it via the in game currency called Crowns.....top right there's a tally of how much you have.
Click on the energy counter in the bottom right and it brings up 3 tabs...click trade or market.
I have mostly 5* stuff and have not spent a single $ of real currency
