@Nodocchi
We are talking about new content that the end game players have been waiting for, not cosmetics or stat enhancements... There is quite a difference seeing as how it took them quite a while to release new content for us, yet the only way the end game players can get to it is pay observed amounts of money, I am sure not every one of the End game players wish to constantly do things we have been doing since the opening of Spiral Knights (As well as beta...).
An opinion from "the average gamer" on the updates and SK up to now.
Thats the thing though, it isn't really new content, it is just old content rehashed to be a ton more difficult and recoloured armour. The last new content update was Lockdown. If you're an end-game player who has played the old content enough to be so bored at the game you should have absurd amounts of money to pay for the new content. Otherwise you really haven't played the game enough.
I did have absurd amounts of money, 290k Crowns and 20k CE is pretty stable, all of which didn't get me a single Shadow Key...
And that is really your own opinion on the new content... I like to see it as a Heroic Mode (WoW raiding reference) of SK... Or Tier 3.5 , Sure it is just recycled areas and bosses with new mechanics as well as stats, but at least it is new content, and regardless if the armour is just a recolour or not, it most likely has superior or different stats to there counter parts.
After reading all the threads in the forums about these shadow levels and the complexity of getting to them and completing them made me think that I will NEVER spend real money on getting any of those keys. When accessories came out at first I though it would all get much more accessible to players in time but getting a random accessory in a lottery for a high price doesn't seem attractive. Yes, the price of 750 CE is outrageous for a key but making shadow keys even more impossible to get (maybe not entirely impossible but still with a very slim chance) made me realize what the developers of this game are after - MORE profit. This is very sad really. I can bear with the prices of the gear, CE and so on since I already paid over 100$ but seeing where all these new updates lead to I think I will not invest any more to this game since I don't like gambling with a high risk of failure. I don't like gambling at all actually.
In conclusion, I would like to say that I don't care what the prices of accessories are since I don't need them and they are useless and overpriced but I'm very disappointed that after investing over 100$ I still don't have much of a chance to see the new levels unless I pay another 100$ to see at least one shadow level. The chances and price make me disband the idea of even trying to get one of those shadow keys. I say "THANK YOU" for creating another useless update that didn't make the game any more fun for me and most of the community.
Well at least the new masks for the candies are attainable and fun, so I hope developers of this game will be more player-friendly rather than profit-friendly in the future. If not, then I won't be staying here much. Cheers. :)
@Yatterman
That is nowhere near absurb, you'll have to do better than that.
The issue is, where do you draw the line. You think 750 CE is a "high" but "reasonable" price for a shadow key per run, but it would still be out of reach for some of the casual friends I have.
I will also say another thing. I can afford a shadow key so assuming that I am up to the challenge, I could have access to the new areas. I have simply chosen to ignore it because I do not want it enough. It's a shame that OOO has chosen to make the new areas so prohibitively expensive. Should I attempt the challenge though, I know I would be most displeased if it costs a fraction of what I've put in a few days later. None of us can speak for everyone, so while you may be right that some might not care, I am certain that others would. As far as I know, the "elites" want exclusivity and new contents. Why else would they be willing to spend as much on not only VHigh/Max UVs but also on "collectibles" (e.g. Regalia sets).
Well, as I have said, I wouldn't mind if they make the keys cheaper - I have nothing to lose and much to gain. I would however feel for those who have burnt large amount of $/CEs. As far as the costumes are concerned though, I have no problem if some items are only accessible if a casual player is willing to grind for months.
The suggestion has been made that shadow keys should be sold from Boost. The reason for this is to give people a simple and sure way to acquire shadow keys and not have to rely on luck. The only issue i have with this suggestion is that all the posts that I have read expect that the shadow keys will be sold for 750CE. However, this will most likely not be the case.
I expect that if THREE RINGS decides to sell shadow keys at Boost, that they would sell the shadow keys for some number between 2000 and 5000CE per shadow key.
My reasoning for this is that 1 shadow key allows a party of 4 access threw a shadow lair. Therefore 4 people can split the price to purchase that single shadow key. So the price of a shadow key has to take into account that 4 people are pooling their resources to acquire it. If the price is set at 800CE, then that divided by 4 is just 200CE per person which can be acquired by practically anyone. If the price is set at 2000CE, then that divided by 4 is just 500CE per person which is probably a reasonable if low price for a key. If the price is set at 4000CE, then that divided by 4 is 1000CE per person which is still within reason but a high price for a key.
Therefore, if people support the suggestion that shadow keys should be sold from Boost, then they should accept and support that those shadow keys will probably be sold at such a price.

I would be all for having a more expensive option to getting shadow keys like that. 4k CE seems a little ludicrous, but even then - it's for 4 people getting in and sharing the cost, so I'd probably try the new content with some of my guildmates/friends if we had that option. The way it is now, however? No. I hate the idea of gambling for crap like this, and the cost by the accounts I've seen on the forums so far is prohibitively expensive.
My group is likely to jump ship when Torchlight 2 hits at this point. SK is a fun, great game, but between the lack of new content and the horrible lag, I see no reason to put money towards this game again, and nor do the people I play with. The Punkin is a wonderful new addition, giving us reason to play for a much longer period burning CE for some silliness yesterday. I only wish the shadow levels would provide similar benefit. Oh well.

I agree with the statement in this post. I personally have dumped quite a bit of money into this game, and I would like to hope that my opinion as a customer would be listened to. The accessory update I feel is just fine. tho the cost is a bit high I have personally dumped quite a bit of money into keys and people who are not interested need not apply! That's great! if you want to draw more money from this it makes sense to keep adding accessories and lower the cost of the keys.... I'm a software engineer, and I'm certainly not poor, but when you realize that 750CE is about the cost of a cup of coffee you quickly realize that this is not a winning strategy economically for a roll of the dice. *please note I play daily and use crowns to buy delicious items and my mist to play)
now on to the latest patch. The shadow key is hiding actual game content from people for the same as the luxury items. While I do appreciate the fact that you have to pay your devel team and server costs... I feel pretty jaded by this decision. if the cost was a bit lower on opening boxes I probably wouldn't care as much. I think the best solution would be to sell both keys at the energy market. the chance that someone will play for free for long enough to buy a key and to have enough energy to craft anything at the end (if they survive the levels... I did take part in the test) is slim and none already. It seems *fair* to lower the cost on silver keys to 350CE or so and people would probably eat it up (especially after all of this). Also sell the shadow key at a price to offset the cost of the free stuff you get (recipes, heat, tokens and otherwise). 750 - 1000 CE seems fair to me, and should be fiscally sound for you guys
Cheers

"You complain about Shadow Keys and rare accessories being unobtainable because no one is going to sell them on the AH but this has always been the case with rare UVs. Why complain about this and not the other? I doubt the new content is anything extraordinary, people have already made it clear that the new armour sets are not better than what we have now, so what we really end up with is just a bunch of new costumes/prestige items. Are you really complaining because you can't get a couple of prestige items given how little you actually play?"
First of all, I am not complaining it is just my opinion (see the second word in the title of this post). If you want to read about complaining read pretty much every other thread created in the last 36 hours. And as I have explained before, rare UVs are completely different than game content. Rare UVs are NOT a necessity to complete or play certain parts of the game. I already covered this argument somewhere in this post around the mid 20s, check it out. It would be no different if Candlestick Keep needed a random key only there were armors, refinished bosses, etc. And it has nothing to do with how good the content is either, you are missing the point again. This has more to do with principles and how the game is shaped in the future. If every item and every level is not obtainable to a REASONABLE degree (which it isn't in my opinion and apparently the majority of other posters) it is not free to play. And it is a matter of opinion as to whether the armor sets are worth it. I know others that would disagree and really want a shadow vog a.k.a. Snarby set. The rest is debatable but irrelevant. What if it was new 6* gear? It doesn't matter the quality of the content, what matters is that most cannot attain it, regardless of price. You can buy a used xbox 360 or ps3 game for $20. To spend that on a lottery in a "free to play" game and get nothing of perceivable value is insane.
"Thats the thing though, it isn't really new content, it is just old content rehashed to be a ton more difficult and recoloured armour. The last new content update was Lockdown. If you're an end-game player who has played the old content enough to be so bored at the game you should have absurd amounts of money to pay for the new content. Otherwise you really haven't played the game enough."
You contradict yourself. If this update is not new content and a rehash as you put it, then Lockdown is not new content either it is just rehashed Bomber. New levels and armor sets is new content, the bosses are rehashed (we agree!) from what I heard, but how will I ever know?
And end game players probably get 50,000cr+ and extra CE and roll for unique UVs or make new armor sets, like I do. I know very few that have tens of thousands of CE, even paying knights. In fact, I know none.
You can disagree with me all you want, that is your right and opinion. But you are in the vast minority. Your post is the only one I have read here that does not agree with me and the others at least partially.
Lastly, even 750CE is too high for something that should cost 10CE per level. A one time use key should not cost roughly the same amount to upgrading a 5* item. This is about as useful as the heat amplifier.
Ehsan, well said, btw.
Totally support you Triarii.
As ir is now, the game is not completely free to play.
Sure you can 'theoretically' play all the contents for free. But practically it is just infeasible as it is now.
I would also be against those keys even if they were 750ce.
Make new content just as any other gates.
I was really waiting for new monsters, but being unable to play the new content I am really frustrated.
