Who here recalls a game called Allods Online? Who remembers how it basically killed itself by charging people rediculous prices just to remove a "fear of death" 30 minute debuff?
Who here is concerned that SK is fast approaching the same outcome?

i can't remember if it's this one or another one.. (sorry can't check at work)
but there's ep 10 and 12 where he (tony) covers the game..
he did really like it... but the 'forcing' people to play killed the game...
the difference here is that OOO isnt forcing you to pay, this content is challenge mode at best. if you want the new content u work for it or consciously make the choice to drop a few bucks, thats about it. sure they give you incentive to want to buy, but nothing on par with some games that swindle you out of your money.
madadder i have a hard time believing anyone, let alone you, would support this new update. In fact, I thought I remember you bashing it yesterday. Am I correct?
bashing it? hm i don't recall explicitly bashing it i might have been caught in the moment but nothing some sleep didnt cure. looking at this update now, and i thought "it's not for me, i have other things to do". if someone has a shadow key i don't mind giving it a shot but ultimately i don't care about how OOO runs their game. however i will not stand for people going all out and attacking OOO without them seeing both sides in an objective manner
think about it, its' a bit too late for them to take it back now isn't it...
they remove the content, people rage about it and elite players flaunt their shiny armor/costumes, while the rest would rage about the energy they spent. if the armor were removed then everyone would be mad
they separate Shadow Keys from lockboxes, now players will rage about how much CE they sunk into silver keys and would demand refunds or something
they reduce the prices on the keys and again people would rage about the CE they originally paid for them whether from silver keys or the AH
they can't win, so they have to stay the course and hope things die down
Flawed, yes. But people are blowing it way out of proportion and accusing OOO of blatant money grubbing, when that isn't the complete story. Part of what it boils down to is people view the new levels like power grinders would see new content. They see the rewards, want to obtain it, feel they are entitled to have it, then complain about the methods used to get it being too far against they're favor. Since obtaining it is unreliable, they immediately start calculating how much time and effort it would take to reliably obtain the rewards.
Simple fact of the matter is that this was never intended to replace the clockworks as the new grinding area for 5* vets whole have done everything already. Its presenting a new challenge, with a unique reward, but they put up a logical barrier of entry to make sure it doesn't become a new grind zone. Everything else about it is sub-par payout and insanely difficult to survive for that very reason.
The main thing that they messed up on is the pricing on the Silver keys, and not having a second method to get the shadow keys, even if it had a large price tag attached to it. The silver keys were an incorrect estimate of how players view the concept as a whole, and is largely based off the TF2 model since SK has nothing even remotely similar to base it off of. The binding nature of equipment also didn't help, but isn't as critical an issue considering how the costumes are setup. But the high cost of keys was also a deterrent to having the market overly flooded with cheap accessories, which is still occurring despite the high cost of silver keys. To a marketer, what that says is the population is willing to take that huge risk on a game of chance just to get those rare accessories... which is exactly what TF2 is accomplishing.
Lowering the cost of the silver keys would help, as it puts the system in reach of more people. But at the same time, they need to dilute the contents of the lock boxes to keep the system's equivalent of rage crafting from harming the value of the items it can award. The issue it can't address however is the typical price gouging of rare items on the player market. For Shadow keys, having a second method to obtain them could help set the price and deter rage-boxing for that particular item. But by maintaining a chance to get these items in the boxes, still creates opportunity to sell them if the player doesn't want the associated content.
Just as a note, this content is not "optional" like accessories. This is actually the endgame.
This is the meat of the game, with an unreliable entry fee.
It is what most advanced players would like to play, and most likely a requisite to get to the core whenever it is released.
This is like WoW releasing a new expansion, but to play it you have to play roulette with real money, and after you complete a quest you have to repeat the process.
they didn't force the players to pay for allods either...
when you died you get a 30 minute debuff that reduced your stats.. by a massive amount, unless you used some consumable...
the consumable can be bought from the cash store, or off the AH with in game currency
or you could just play with reduced stats.. or wait 30 minutes..
oh also the debuff stacked..
they didn't force you to spend money, but if you didn't your time definitely wasn't enjoyable..
this update isn't as bad because the new content is for people who have delved to the end of fsc many times and who need new things to do
and those people are rich enough to pay for the keys
the issue there is that the new content doesnt impact anyone in that manner like you described, it's basically challenge mode. it doesnt affect those who don't want to do it (or T1/t2 players)
"make the choice to drop a few bucks"
It isn't a few bucks though. I blew 45$ and didn't get a single key.
Broxaim, doing FSC many, many times is never a guarantee for money.
There's no relation. Sure, FSC offers tons of cash, but not all of us spent near close enough of it to be at a point where we have nothing better to do with it than to pile it up and keep the numbers for bragging rights.
I blew 45$ and didn't get a single key.
that is your fault, you should have known when to stop. OOO does appreciate your patronage though
i do think the madadder is the pit boss in his avatar pic
and so the conspiracy continues
i don't understand how you could rationalize someone who is willing to pay $45 dollars to a company deserves to get nothing they want in return, fact is one could sink $200 dollars into keys and still possibly get nothing they want.
The way it is it doesn't matter how much time, effort, or dedication you put into SK you still have as much chance of seeing the new content as the guy who started yesterday, the only difference is how much CE/money either one is willing to gamble with to get a key, even then the loyal guy who stuck by SK since beta started may open 50 boxes and come up with a handful of drab maid headbands, while the other guy may get lucky on his first try.
This is an MMORPG which are suppose to reward people who put effort into it, not an online gambling site, we have poker.net for that.
P.S. People, don't give in to the "I WANT IT NOW" urge and buy a ton of silver keys now, just be patient and wait, when the cash dries up OOO will change their system and you will feel better when you do get your shadow key, gambling for a key now will only encourage them to stay with the current system and will not help your fellow players, pull your lockboxes from the AH for now (they may be worth more later ;) ), and if you see someone opening a bunch of boxes /epicfail them, please spread this message in-game and/or add this message to your posts.
