So what's the most efficient way of dealing with groups of T2-T3 knights with an elemental alchemer (for example, 3rd stage in the arena)?
Shoot, wait for shield, unload normal shots? shoot, wait for shield, charge shots? or some other way?

Usually, mechs in arenas will pile up, so I use charged Volt Driver shots right as they get close enough to start attacking. If I hit them all, they usually get Shocked and have their attacks interrupted. I'm guessing the other alchemers would have to live with shooting from further away, though.
At first I assumed you meant Spiral Knights, not Mecha Knights (as in Lockdown).
The most efficient way against groups is to just spam at the ones in the back and eventually you'll start hitting them (this is one situation where Polaris is actually better). It might help to use single shots, but I'm not really sure.
Against single knights, the pattern is one shot, pause, full clip (after their shield breaks), repeat.
Actually, I should probably experiment with shoot, shield breaks, charge shot. Sounds interesting.
Use Divine Avenger instead.
Actually, just wait for the shield to go down.
I use a Prisma Driver (just upgraded to Nova :D) for this and my strategy is thus:
Against a lone mecha, fire one shot so that his shield comes up, pause for it to come down, two shots. Repeat.
Against more than one, put one shot wide left or right to make half of the group shield, then one wide to the opposite side to make the other half shield in alternating time. While one side pauses and shields, I shoot the other side, then after a reload put two shots into the opposite side of the last while their shields are down. This way if I aim well, I don't waste any shots on shields, and the whole group keeps on alternating walking and shielding their way slowly after me. So long as they stay grouped up, firing on the group whose shields are recharging consistently makes the opposing ones put their shields up, and if one group gets ahead, some shots will bounce into their backs off of the other group even while their shields are up.
Works every time, and is as efficient (I find) as kiting and charging a sword to swipe at them.
This gets harder to do when there are very many mechas, but it still works if you aim carefully and pick which ones you will focus on taking down out of the group and ignore the others aside from putting the occasional shot their way to make them pause and shield.
I used to use a Volt Driver and also used it how Volkani described, but I decided to give the Prisma line a try, and the upped damage is FAR superior to occasional shock (except against kats.)
.. i use 2 techniques:
-1 shot for trigger the block animation and when ends, spam 2 shots.
-Charge shoot spam.. with some lucky you can OH-KO some knights (nova driver)
charged shot reaches them before they raise their shield sometimes.
single tap to get the shield up and then double tap works all the time.
while shocked, they can't raise their shield, so that helps too.
any elemental alchemer hits these guys so hard, that single tap > double tap on the leader's left shoulder will destroy the group quickly.
if they have a gremlin healer or two, just spam umbra driver into the center as you circle.
the gremlins will be healing the knights and won't be able to dodge.
a lot of times they don't even get a chance to bubble.
i just run in a circle unloading into them with my Storm Driver (UV low speed increase) with normal shots mostly, if they really bunch up though I sometimes fire out a charged shot and nail about 5-6 of them at once.
