Not sure about piercing, but shadow for sure does more damage compared to normal on him. Orange numbers and everything.

Just confirmed it myself
Just confirmed it myself today. Was doing gray damage again with Blackhawk on RJ. 27 a hit with BH lvl 10, and about *57 a hit with a Toxic Catalyzer.
(Was brown star damage)
ya that's what I would concur from that statement.
