Bad pun intended as I have a lot of trouble fighting this guy. By the time I get close and start an attack animation, he's bounced to the other side of the arena.
I also don't see him that often- once a day- but that may just be my horrendous luck.
Are there any tricks to the punkin king?

you need to hit him 5 or so times.. he drops 5 candies, and then when you beat him he drops another 5 candies
but you have to beat him before the time runs out
treat:
you just get 10 candies
shivermist or any freeze works well against him very well, this keeps him in place, and even when the freeze hits, it counts as a hit and he drops candy.
fast weapons are also good, like cutter family

I'm in mostly 5* gear and
I'm in mostly 5* gear and going into some T1 spots for quick punkin runs. Things I've noticed is you'll want to switch to a lower tier weapon. I killed him in 2 hits with my Leviathan...thus, only getting 2 candy drops...plus the 5 for killing him. If you want to get the full amount of candy, you need to use a weapon that can hit him 5 times without killing him.
Also, try to follow him around without attacking until he gets close to a corner. He has a tendency of bouncing back and forth in that corner a couple times before taking off to another corner. Try to hit him once or twice while bouncing back and forth in each corner. Don't so much chase him swinging wildly as you'll usually miss.
I just pick a gate with a clockwork level at the very first and keep hitting it over and over. I have had almost a 75% or higher rate of seeing the king that way. Yes, it's terrible for crowns/heat, but I'm usually only doing it 3-4 times day with my leftover mist after having done a JK run for my crowns.

You need clockwork levels to find him, any level that can have a danger room, or in other words a level which has a gear icon.
It sounds like you're going up alone against him probably with a slow blade, too. Try something that hits rapidly, I used a Dark Thorn Blade on depth 1 on him and got 10 out of him every time. I'm not sure killing him in too few strikes is possible. I think he's on a timer after which he breaks spilling some candy, if you get 5 hits in early he just breaks early.
If you're having problems just invite more people, the candy is not devided it's tokens. Solo you get 10, with 4 people everyone gets 10. If he escapes you alone with 4 people someone will probably hit him. Find some people who also hunt for candy, do a few levels that might have him solo, when you find him invite the other guys, tell them to do the same, that way you'll get tons of candy in no time.

Like I said...I killed him in two hits. The first was a charge attack, followed by a normal attack. He dropped 2 candy and was dead.

I've seen him a bunch of times already. All I do is chase him and hit him like the pinata he is.
