If its gonna be a generic D&D

If its gonna be a generic D&D clone, your setting yourself up for a headache. I haven't read the 4th edition yet, but 3rd edition D&D was a book keeping and dice rolling Nightmare. Most other systems were not a lot better...

3 Tips that'll help simplify design, and possibly make it easier to play.
- Keep dice rolls to a minimum.
- Damage is fixed in this game, use that to your advantage.
- The initiative system has to be simple, or better yet, rolled into another mechanic.

TL,DR: Point-based systems

Look at GURPS. Look at BESM. Mutants and Masterminds.

Better yet.
Look at Warhammer.

Each character has a base point total. Each piece of gear has a point value.

Whatever is the system, one thing stays the same; we are defined by what we wear.. and the sky's as much as we can allocate to ourselves.
If you feel like you MUST have a class system, just make so each class has a bonus using a type of gear; Gun, Sword, Bomb or Shield.
No motre, no less.
No levels, no abilities, no book-keeping.

Only gear, and the bonuses they provide.

It won't have anything to do

It won't have anything to do with D&D or dice rolls.

It'll pretty much be a fan-fic esque tthing except that everyone can advance the story...

/fail explain

If it's a small roleplay then

If it's a small roleplay then I think you can do it freeform.

As a sidenote I've done 3.0 and 3.5 D&D. It takes awhile to setup but I always had fun doing it. It was like having game mechanics before we could even have video games :P

I don't think OP had D&D Role

I don't think OP had D&D Role Playing in mind at all.

I assumed he meant more along the lines of "Players take the role of a character of their choosing and post said character's actions/dialogue in turn, stringing together as a sort of collaborative fanfic.

Actually I just finished

Actually I just finished talking to a memeber of a very new guild called Custom Roleplay. I don't know if this person was the leader or not, but they are trying to bring RP into the game. I can see how this will be hard, especially with so few members they have and so few people actually willing to try it. But I for one hope they pull through, I would love to see some RP in this game.

I honestly don't understand

I honestly don't understand why Dungeons and Dragons and dice rolling was mentioned either. Like Tazurin said, its just people making chracters and being in a story that they advance in through their posts (in which they posts their actions, thoughts, and speech).

@TC - Don't put yourself down saying that you failed at explaining, I understood it from the title alone. QUite obviously you'd have specified if it were going to be some dumb dice rolling thing (which, BTW, how the heck would that work on a forum?) and you would have lay down the basics to it to see if people were interested.

I know the general concept of SK roleplay has been about for a while now, and to be quite frank I too came up with an idea for it, but no one has really acted on it as far as I know. I guess, from what Ramev said, there is a small in-game group trying it but I bet the dialogue will be lacking while action takes place (not necassarily a bad thing) and vice versa. I wouldn't think this would be much of a problem and they'd probably do after battle comments and such, especially if someone goes down. If you do plan on going through with the idea and need someone extra or need someone to help you out, you can just let me know.

Well, playing D&D is very

Well, playing D&D is very much a form of Role Playing, not just rolling some dice, and therefore referred to as "Role Playing". It's also by no means unpopular, so mention of it is not surprising.

Additionally, there are ways to play it online and it's a very customizable "game", so one could make a D&D Spiral Knights somethingorother if they wanted to.

I've personally never played, but I'm sure it could work.

Well I understand that but I

Well I understand that but I took it from the perspective that a good majority (every one I've seen as well) of forum roleplays are the same and not much like Dungeons and Dragons at all. My point was just how quickly the assumption was made then blown out of proportion when, I think some rules or guidelines would have been specified had it been Dungeon and Dragons-esque. I did find it as a bit of a blow when the TC posted as if they were at fault. Still, you can't dice roll on this forum so it'd all be based on trust which doesn't always work out too well.
