So, I've decided to get a better sword than the Acheron I have now, and have decided between Gran Faust and Divine Avenger. Which one should I get, and if neither of them are a suitable choice for me, which sword should I have?
Ditching my Acheron; DA or GF?
DA and Acheron are two entirely different swords, like Lady said. You can compare the speed, knockback, and dmg of the Acheron vs GF, but not with the DA. It's really your opinion, on whether you like fast swords or slow swords. Personally, I prefer Acheron over Faust.
I agree with the other responders. Damage type is important in swords and guns (and not so much in bombs), so DA is not any kind of replacement for Acheron.
In shadow swords, I prefer Acheron over Gran Faust. In piercing swords, I like Barbarous Thorn Blade and Final Flourish about the same amount. In elemental swords, I like Glacius and Divine Avenger about the same amount, although they're quite different. The other elemental swords are roughly as good as these, it seems, albeit different.
If you're dissatisfied, then either you're simply looking for something different, or maybe you want to be a gunner or bomber?
If you don't like the acheron, I assume you don't like 3-swing style swords.
Then, I recommend BOTH the DA & GF for your elemental and shadow swords, respectively.
This is just a guess, but do you think the acheron is under-powered compared to its sealed sword alternative?
I'm trying to figure out what you mean by "better."
I have a hunch that you may have seen a gran faust wielding knight deal a lot of per-swing damage and perhaps think your acheron is not able to compete.
However, the DPS of the acheron will be higher for an individual target than a GF, all other things equal.
If it was a question of damage, you could buff it with different gear (skolver & a barbarous thorn shield) or sword damage trinkets.
But again, if it's a question of style, then at least you know you don't like 3-swing style swords.
As usual, Sypsy is right. If you think your Acheron is underpowered, you're in for a nasty surprise when you get Gran Faust. Acheron has higher DPS in most situations, and its charge attack is decent and entirely safe. But slow swords are fun, I must say.
So what I've gathered from the responses, GF and Acheron are essentially the same when it comes to damage, the Acheron being higher in some cases. Then if that's true, I think I'll stay with my Acheron, but get a DA along with it.
Sticking with your Acheron and getting a DA is a good plan. Then you can get either FF or BTB, and you've got all the swords you'll ever need.
For completeness, I must emphasize that Acheron and GF are not the same when it comes to damage. Here are data on regular attacks:
- Acheron: 966 damage per combo, at about 35 combos per minute, produces 563 damage per second.
- Gran Faust: 773 damage per combo, at about 32 combos per minute, produces 412 damage per second.
(The damage per combo comes from the wiki, for Stratum 6 slimes/gremlins. Disclaimer: I measured the combos per minute, but not repeatedly, so they're approximate. They were both measured with ASI medium. Also, they're actually for Glacius and DA, not Acheron and GF, but those numbers should be about the same?) So even if these numbers are somewhat off, Acheron does significantly more damage. Of course, Gran Faust's swing is broader, so you can sometimes hit multiple enemies, doing a lot of damage; but timing this is delicate enough that it's not really a route to high DPS.
In charge, Acheron does 613 + 166, while GF does 682 + 190. Both projectiles have the ability to hit multiple times, I think. So GF's charge does a bit more damage. Of course, it also curses sometimes; then again, it curses sometimes. ;)
Just so things don't get confused, "Get a FF" means "Get a Final Flourish" not "Get a Furious Flamberge", though I personally prefer the BTB over either.
Nicoya-Kitty, thanks for clarifying that! Furious Flamberge is so far off my radar at this point that I didn't even realize the potential for confusion. :)
GF > Acheron
DPS isnt everything ...
had both and prefer the GF especially for slime in JK palace or gremlims, hell even robos its better for
brandish weapons are great for charge hits but not so good for swinging hits
find my Combuster's 3rd hit usually doesnt connect on monsters whereas GF 2nd always will :)
I say GF is worth it just for the chance of curse. It's the only weapon in the game that does so, and it only curses YOU if you charge it, and even then it's like 25% chance or so.
No, DPS isn't everything. I still use GF occasionally. I find the slow swords really fun. But I use Acheron almost all the time now.
Against gremlins I see no contest. Stratum 6 gremlins are fast, and the speed of Acheron really helps. If there's room to maneuver, then you can charge Acheron over and over again without worry. In an arena, where a gremlin mender is semi-protected by a crowd of other monsters, an Acheron charge takes it out nicely. So does a GF charge, but always with the worry of curse.
Against slimes, GF is arguably a bit better. Its long reach, wide sweep, and large knockback mean that you can smash whole crowds of slimes, doing huge damage. Of course, you have to be careful not to get hit between the first and second strokes of the combo. Although GF is arguably better, Acheron is good enough. And slimes are simply not as difficult as gremlins, so I'd rather optimize for gremlins.
In my opinion, GF's ability to curse is more cool than useful. It can help with large monsters such as the Royal Jelly and lichen colonies. But small monsters simply die from regular old sword damage, before the curse even has a chance to kill them.
DA vs Acheron is as apple and orange as can be. One does Elemental, the other Shadow. They complement rather than substitute of each other (same goes for GF vs DA). Acheron and GF can be considered substitute of each other, though I know many who prefer the Acheron to the GF so it might or might not be an "upgrade" (personally I prefer faster swords). For a better answer, or other suggestions, we would need to know what other weapons are you using.
