Did anyone else see the purple markings on the ground when they were going through the Clockworks? And the normal monsters being replaced with friends? Is this new, or did I just miss it?

Those levels can be Fiend-themed too, including before October. I have seen all monster families in Clockworks-themed levels, it seems they can have any combination of monster and status theme that any other level type can. Click the links in this section of the Gate page on the wiki for more information about a particular level type and which theme combinations are possible.
They've been around forever. If you read the recon module at the start of a Devilish drudgery level, the markings are used to summon other minions... but you can find them any place theres mineral formations. And lets not forget Konjuring Kat.
