swordie needs some gunslinging tips

Currently I'm a swordie running with a Vog Cub set, BTS, elite slash and focus trinkets, Acheron, DA, Dark Thorn Blade / Vile Striker (for JK or anywhere piercing is useless), and a Polaris. I'm looking to amass some more guns in my arsenal and would like to get some tips on how to use them more effectively. I just tend to spam my Polaris through the Jelly Palace or the last wave of an arena and to take down turrets, which serves me well enough, but I'm sure theres better ways of using it.

Other guns I currently have are the Needle Shot (which I intend to eventually make into a Blitz Needle) and Antigua (I'm thinking AP might be the best choice but maybe someone who knows more about them than I do could tell me the pros and cons of each?). I also have all the recipes for the Biohazrd line, I'm just waiting to get enough tokens for a Catalyzer.

Is the Gunslinger Armour worth getting? The bonuses look kinda meh to me, but maybe they're more useful than they look? I was thinking maybe a swift strike buckler would suffice and then get some damage trinkets and wear whichever armour best suits the stratum. I run both solo and in a party and spend most of my time in T2 farming JK and Twins for crowns/tokens, T3 arenas and occasionally FSC (clearly I'd need better shield here but I've only got the two, suggestions?).

Though I am a swordy at heart, I have to admit guns are fun, and I'd like to expand my options when hybriding, and on the odd occassion I feel like going full gunner I would like to be able to do so effectively.

In summary: Do my weapon choices seem appropriate and whats the best way to use them?, Armour and shield options?, Best trinkets/bonuses?, Anything else I'm missing? and some general advice for both party and solo play.

Thanks in advance ^_^

Are you looking to switch to

Are you looking to switch to a full on Gunslinger loadout? or are you just still looking at Sword Primary & Gun Secondary?

What runs are you looking at doing? If you are staying with JK & the Twins for a while you are set with that Polaris. Well really if your running FSC you are also set the the Polaris, but I really like to have a Blitz Needle or two in my party for phase 5.

I am in a somewhat similar boat as you. I am a Swordsman (Vog, 5* Slash & Focus) that carries a gun for backup/turrents (Gigawatt Pulsar or Valiance) and sometimes a bomb (Freezing Atomizer UV CTR Very High). I am mostly focusing on FSC gear at the moment. Once I upgrade to Shivermist and get it heated up to CTR Max I will be in good shape for a support roll in FSC, but I'm considering gearing up an alternate loadout for phase 5 damage (the fight takes too long with out Blitz Needles in the party).

Shield suggestions: Get a Grey Owlite Shield next. I switch out between Wise Owlite Shield (Elemental/Normal/Fire/Shock), Dark Thorn Shield (Piecing/Normal/DMG+), and Sinister Skelly Shield (Shadow/Normal/Poison/Freeze) depending on what is in the stratum ahead. The Owlite makes the Twins much more chill to run (I know not hard to begin with), it is one of the most popular FSC shields (along with VPS, and Crest of Almire), and it is great for running danger rooms and arenas which tend to have a ton of Construct.

The AP is very situational and widely viewed as only worth while in FSC and even then widely argued to be inferior to the Polaris. I have considered it just for FSC (have recipes) just because I like a to play a mobile kiting game. That and I have been in a random T3 party with a couple people who were geared for gunslinging, both used APs (even on inappropriate targets), and ran through like a wrecking ball. The Blitz Needle just has everything way outclassed when it comes to damaging but I hate guns that lock me in place to fire.

If I were you I think I would add Handgun trinkets into your mix before I crafted gunslinger armor. What I have been kicking around for FSC (and have seen others running) is keeping the Vog & 2 swords (Levi & either Voltedge or DA) plus Polaris and Blitz Needle and tossing in 2x Elite Trueshot Modules. Elemental sword and Polaris for most of the FSC work, Blitz for Trojans and duke phases 1,3,5, and the Levi for Mask phases and tandem work if there is a Shivermist in the group (Shivermist + Levi charge is a great combo).

If you get that Bio Catalyzer you will have guns for Shadow, Elemental, Piercing and could mess around with a Gunslinger loadout. I think pure gunslingers tend to be fans of Shadow Driver, Elemental Driver, Callahan though.

Since you are mostly focused

Since you are mostly focused on hybriding, i'd say don't get gunslinger armour. that set's pretty much only for people who will run full guns.

now onto the guns:
like bluescreenofdeath said, AP and sentenza lines are very situational. so i would recommend against getting it.
As a side arm, the polaris is one of the best (if not hte best) gun for a swordie (interrupts turrets with normal shots). but here are a few gun sidearm that you should also consider:

elemental: Magma or storm or nova driver.
each one of these have their own pros.
the nova driver is good everywhere. does about 1/5 more damage than the other two per shot (around 30damage, same damage as a polaris expanded shot). no negative side effects
magma driver has really good dps. as long as you can inflict a burn at least once, the magma will out damage the nova driver (the magma does 78-110ish burn damage per tick).
the storm driver's really good against tightly packed mobs as 1 shock tick will shock all the monsters touching the shocked monster. i was using a volt driver (4*) in FSC and i managed to do higher dps with it than using my polaris.

shadow: biohazard or umbra driver. for groups, it's much harder to use the biohazard due to its slow bullets. the umbra driver handles like a shadow nova driver.

you should aim at the left shoulder of the target (their left, your right side), just so the ricochet bullet will spawn inside the monster. similarly with charge shots, aiming slightly to either side can cause the ricochet to spawn inside the monster, doing ridiculous damage in the process. and one thing i've noticed is that the status alchemers inflict the status effect much much more frequently than polaris or biohazard. so you can actually count on the status being inflicted

should u decide to become a full gunslinger, i would recommend the blitz needle as your piercing gun. the callahan's easier to use but the blitz is better in most (if not all) situations

Ugh.

Don't get a Pulsar. Just don't.

It's terrible for swordsmen. The fact that it's a little better against turrets is nullified by being unable to use the thing without pushing mobs away from your sword and ruining formations.

The Voltech line, in my opinion, is the best sidearm for swordsmen in the game. You can throw it out quickly before running up, causing some DoT and AoE damage while you work on the mobs with your sword. It will never ruin clusters of mobs, blind teammates, or push things out of your range. You don't need Polaris for turrets unless you're in, say... a Gun Puppy danger room or URJP.

You don't want a Prismatech either, because the damage increase is only beneficial from sustained gunfire, which swordsmen typically do not engage in. I use the Firotech line for shock-based strata and for RJP.

Polaris is a sidearm for gunners (should not be used as a primary), or maybe even bombers. Swordsmen should not have it.

looks like he's mainly using it for turrets in places outside of RJP. polaris is still a good choice if u keep playing this way. Also swordies tend to use their guns only for turrets (and maybe that last knight wave in arena). in both cases polaris is great

polaris is terrible for gunners (even as a sidearm). u are better off using a sword as a sidearm

thanks for the help guys. and

thanks for the help guys. and yeah, swords are my primary, guns are mainly backup but i do get the urge sometimes to go full gunslinger just to see what its like. could you perhaps expand on the reasons that makes polaris bad for a gunner?

I like it for a gunner. You

I like it for a gunner. You don't have to get close and it makes sure nothing ever GETS close even if your back is to the wall. I use it rarely, almost always using Nova Driver instead, but when I need it I'm glad I have it. In FSC I have both on, and in very rare situations (beginning of the first room in Ashen Armory, for example) it outdamages Nova Driver.

Also, I didn't read the OP fully because it made my head spin from the wall of unpunctuated, uncapitalized text.

polaris as a main weapon: i

polaris as a main weapon:
i prefer the alchemers over polaris mainly because of the knockback of the polaris really interferes with your ability to hit them. low damage per hit (when compared with swords) in conjunction with slow bullets really kills ur dps. it also blinds ur teammates with the expanded shots. if i need to push things away, i use shield bumping and stun vials. so no need for a polaris.

polaris as a gunner sidearm:
doesn't really complement with a full loadout of guns.. guns cover a good range already, so the polaris's range isn't really an advantage. a gunner usually lack knockback power for whenever the mobs get too close. a sword is much better at knocking back things that are too close since the polaris takes a certain amount of distance until it can expand. also guns are great at doing sustained dps (well not really the polaris because of knockback) while swords are great at doing burst dps. thus a sword sidearm would complement a gunner loadout much better than the polaris.

@glowing-ember
for that first room in ashen armory, it feels like my team cleared it much faster when i was using an ASI med volt driver 4* than when i was using a polaris (was with the same group of people when i was using both guns). probably because of the higher frequency of shock infliction and lack of knockback?

I'm not talking about the

I'm not talking about the whole room. I mean just when each wave spawns, Polaris does more because they're so tightly packed and then spreads them out just enough for the alchemer to start doing serious damage. Spamming it will just shove them all to the walls and... it just gets messy from there.
