Hello everybody, first post here!
Well, iv'e been playing for a week or so, and i think this game is awesome so far, but after many hours lurking the Wikia, it seems that the bests sets here are the Vog Cub and Snarbolax set.
I want to have a list of the sets im looking for, to be Eyes Open for the Recipes each run i do, so far this is what i got:
Gunslinger Set:
Nameless Set + Polaris/Supernova (not decided yet)
Bomberman Set
Volcanic Demo Set + Dark Briar Barrage and Nitronome
Swordmaster set
Not Decided + Gran Faust / Leviathan Blade

So far, i dont know how to craft the Snarbolax set, wich is the one i like the most but i dont know...
Anyone can help me choosing a good Swordmaster Set? or is it that any set is good?

piercing, elemental, shadow

My advice: Read the wiki page on Damage. This is the single most important aspect of the rules of Spiral Knights to understand, and almost all newbie questions in the Arsenal forum can be answered by it.

Short version: Own a piercing weapon, an elemental weapon, and a shadow weapon. Carry two of them at a time, based on the gate map for the stratum, or carry all three if you can. There is no particular reason for a normal weapon to be in there, unless it is a truly great normal weapon. Leviathan comes close, but I am a swordsman and I never use it. (Actually, this advice applies to swords and guns, but not to bombs, which are idiosyncratic.)

I recommend that you focus on getting one general-purpose set of armor and weapons, or at least choosing one of swordsman, gunner, bomber, rather than trying to do all three at once. You'll have more fun, and progress more rapidly, if you delve deep into the alchemy paths, rather than spreading out broadly over them.

PvP or PvE

As a sword user set the player will have lots of close combat and will need heavy armor to take many hits so Ironmight Plate Set and Volcanic Plate Set would be good for PvP. Skolver Set, Vog Set and Snarbolax Set are popular in PvE since they have high normal, elemental, piercing and shadow. It also depends what your doing, if your more of a PvE I'd pick something with high normal and high piercing, elemental or shadow, and resists. Leviathan Blade is the strongest Normal damage weapon and is recommended for most users. Weapons like Gran Faust and Divine Avenger are high in Elemental and Shadow, Gran Faust also has Curse making it have a advantage/disadvange in combat.

Bopp's pretty much said it

Bopp's pretty much said it all. you're definitely going to need to focus on one general purpose set of armour and weapons for now and slowly start to branch out once you've progressed a bit further. when i first started i found my self in a similar situation, i liked all the weapon styles and was experimenting alot, but eventually i settled on focusing on swords. i use 4 weapon slots and carry 3 swords (1 shadow, 1 elemental and 1 piercing) and a gun (Polaris). this gives me good coverage against all monster types with my swords, and i use my gun when i need to take things out from a distance. now that I've reached endgame I'm starting to build a bigger arsenal of guns. i also run a bomber set in T2 lockdown.

If you're using 2 weapon slots then I would recommend carrying a sword and a gun of different types, the best combo probably being a piercing sword with an elemental gun. The piercing sword would cover fiends, beasts and gremlins while your gun would cover constructs, undead and slimes. The reason I say this is beacause the main thing you want to take out from range is turrets, and 2/3 kinds of turrets are weak to elemental, the last is neutral to it. An elemental gun will also serve you better in the last wave of arenas, which is usually a heap of mechaknights, and it's safer to strafe around the edges shooting than to run in with a sword. A shadow sword could serve you well but for optimum coverage it would require you to carry a piercing gun. The monsters you would be shooting at with a piercing gun (gremlins, beasts and fiends) dodge like crazy and are easier to take down with a sword (though im sure callahan users would say otherwise =P). Conveniently, a piercing swords' attack pattern is perfect for dealing with those monsters, hitting fiends and beats supereffective and being neutral against gremlins. I wouldnt recommend an elemental sword because most things you want to hit with elemental are easier to take care of with a gun, and it would require you to carry a shadow gun (which I wouldnt use for the same reasons as the piercing one). Please note this advice is for 2 weapon slots, eventually you will want a weapon of every type and when you have more weapon slots available, elemental/shadow swords, piercing/shadow guns can become invaluable.

Now as for the weapons themselves, I'm not going to tell you what to use. That's something you'll have to work out for yourself when you've had more experience and know what style of weapons suit you. I will say though that Polaris is generally considered superior to supernova because of the chance at shock which can make up for the damage reduction and is good for crowd control. asdditionally the elemental damage is better because as i said before, most things you want to be shooting are weak to elemental. normal damage guns in general are considered inferior because guns have low damage in comparison to swords so you always want to try and hit a weakness. also once you get some more swords in your arsenal and have more weapon slots available, a Levi is unlikely to see much use, except perhaps against Vanaduke, but only consider gearing up for that once you reach endgame anyway. the other weapons you listed there look pretty good. i would also suggest you think about the vaporizer status bombs, freeze being great for crowd control and pairs very well with swords, fire does excellent damage over time and clears arenas (assuming they arent fire themed) and jelly palace easily. you'll probably want an elemental and piercing sword to complement the Faust and a shadow and piercing gun (just to avoid potential confusion, by that i mean seperate weapons of course. a split damage weapon like sentenza has only very limited use).

now onto the armour =) as a swordie you cant go past the wolver lines. they have great bonuses for swords. a Skolver set has normal and piercing defense along with max freeze resist and a very high sword damage bonus. Vog Cub set gives normal and elemental defense along with max fire resist and very high sword attack speed increase. Snarbolax is very similar to skolver in that it has the same damage bonus but instead of normal piercing it gives normal shadow defense with less freeze resist than a skolver set but with the addition of poison resist. all are equally good and the one you choose will depend on which kind of strata you run most. for general use, i would recommend vog cub, mainly because the things that hit you most are probably going to be elemental and the ASI will greatly increase your survivability, letting you shield and combo faster. however if you plan to run the jelly palace alot, skolver's damage bonus and piercing defense may serve you better. eventually though you're going to want all 3. the snarbolax set is the hardest to get, requiring you to complete a shadow lair and access the special alchemy machine there. if the wolver line really isnt your thing though, there is a few other sets that may work. Valkyrie or Dread Skelly (now outclassed by snarbolax but is significantly easier to get) sets are good shadow armours, the Chroma lines work well situationally, mainly jelly palace (deadly virulisk probably being the best choice for this due to pierce defense, though i guess salamander might be a decent alternative set for FSC). i dont know much about the gunslinger or bomber sets, so ill leave that for people who do =P.

you didnt mention shields you're interested in so ill give you a few suggestions. my personal favourite is the barbarous thorn shield (upgraded from the bristling buckler, a reward from snarbolax tokens), mainly because the damage bonus is very nice. other good shields are the Grey Owlite for elemental strata, Dread Skelly or Crest of Almire (a reward from vanaduke tokens) for shadow and the Volcanic Plate for all round utility.

wow, turned out to be quite a long post, i hope you find this useful ^_^ if you want to know anything else feel free to message me in game. my IGN is krysophylax.

Baby Steps

The advice given so far has been good. It seems you would like to try a bit of everything, so if you're brand new focus on making smaller goals. I notice on your short list that there are 3 boss items. Work toward those bosses first.
- Krysophylax put it well. Try different weapons to really find out what you like. If you try things at 2* & 3* level to work out your tastes, you'll save a lot of hassle. Leveling somthing to 4* or 5* and then realizing you like something else better is a waste of resources & time. But to start, the classics don't hurt. A Calibur or brandish & an alchemer are decent "try"s.
- Run Snarbolax a bunch. All three of the items from his tokens are great in my opinion. Snarble Barb is identical to the flourish except the charge (which I prefer over the flourish) and is a great bet for a piercing sword. The snarby shield is a favorite of swordsmen everywhere and great for running jelly (three steps down.) And the Spine cone/DBB bomb you have on your list. (Get the barb first as it will help with the other snarby runs.)
- After snarby you'll have a 2* shield & 2* weapons, but you need armor for getting into tier 2. If you have interest in trying bombing, bomb bonuses (specifically CTR) help the most out of all bonuses (This is not to say that any bonus in this game isn't great, but CTR is absolutely key for a bomber. ASI is great for a swordsman, but at this point in your journey you don't have a sealed sword and I feel it helps the most with the big slow whackers.) Anyway, make or buy spiral demo helm. CTR & elemental defense... which preps you for...
- Twins! The Pulsar/Polaris gun really is great so do your twins runs to get it. You don't want to take piercing damage into the twins though so keep that in mind. After twins you have a pulsar & maybe even work on a static capacitor while you're at it.
- After twins is Jelly for that sealed sword to try out. Snarby shield, check. Piercing defense. Hmmmm. Well, at this point you'll have done some gunning & done some swordplay. If you're enjoying sword work more, get a wolver set (upgrade to dusker even). If you like the guns, grab a gunslinger set. Upgrade your pulsar to a kilowatt pulsar. Upgrade your calibur to 3* or your brandish to 3* (shadow damage is best for the jelly palace so the nightblade is a solid choice, but 3* calibur will work well in there.) Do Jelly until your sealed sword.

If you did all of these steps, you'll have 2 sets of armor with different defenses. 2 bombs (1 damage & 1 mist), 3 swords (fast piercing, medium, big and slow), 2 guns, & 1 shield. You will have experienced 3 of the 4 game bosses and if you only upgraded the items for jelly to 3*, then you only absolutely needed 500 CE over your mist (obviously playing more often and crafting without full mist add to this total.) You will have a set with enough variety that after experimenting you know how you want to proceed. From there you can develop what works best for you. You can choose a path to take and work toward T3/FSC.

Thanks!

Thanks for all the awesome Reply's. Im starting to love this community, youv'e been very very helpfull and i appreciate that. I tried a bit of everything so far, 2* o course, i dont have much money, and iv'e come to this:
im 2 Jelly King Runs away from the Sealed Sword... and i have a Twisted Snarble Barb. Since the Sealed sword will turn into a Faust when i get enough money to buy recipe and CE, ill have 1 source of Piercing and 1 source of Shadow damage, both of them being very good from what i heard. Aaaaand to compliment that, ill get the Pulsar Gun to turn it onto a Killowatt Pulsar, so it will; become my source of elemental damage. This way ill have to rent just 1 Extra-Item-Slot and save energy. Since im mainly a Swordman, ill get the rest of the sets later(gunsinger and bomber), when i can farm Tier 3 with the 4* Items, and get more income.
That will complete my Short-Term Weapons....
For Bombs, ill skip this a bit but in the end, ill keep my choice of Nitronome and DBB. 4 Snarbolax runs more and ill get the bomb.
For the Armors, i considered the Skelly Set, but i made my goal to go for he Snarbolax set. I know its going to take a while before i can get it, seeing the prices on the Shadow Keys and all, but i think that, taking my time, saving Crowns and getting into the game community i will be able to finish it (also, it looks awesome). As for shields, the Barbarous Thorn Shield its the way to go...
Exelent so far hehehe....
Also, what do you think of Valkyrie Set + G Owlite Shield???

Your choices are good, but i

Your choices are good, but i would stay away from Skelly Set. For a general purpose armor, you can either go for a wolver line, for a swordsman oriented armor, or for a set oriented for average defense everywhere, like Divine Veil + Skolver Coat.

For shields, BTS is a good piercing defense and swordsman shield, but it breaks really fast to non-piercing attacks. For general purpose shields, Owlite and VPS are better. But the best is to have several shields and switch according the strata you are going to face. Owlite is a very good elemental defense shield, and it's fire resistance make it a very popular option for FSC and even general purpose runs (Elemental damage is very common).

As for Valkyrie set, negative fire resist is a breaker. Even when not running FSC, the poison resist is not the most useful, and curse resist is bad (only Faust charge attack and graveyard fantoms can inflict curse, that's very limited).

What Fradow says is good. But I don't think anyone has pointed out the elephant in the room: You want Snarbolax armor. You can either buy it for an outrageously high price (because of the unbinding fee and the Shadow Key fee), which I don't recommend, or you can earn it yourself. But in order to earn it yourself, you must already have some sweet 5-star gear. So Snarbolax armor is not a good plan, for a first set of good armor. You need to get something else first.

regarding your question about valkyrie set grey owlite.

well you are going to need a shadow set of some sort until you have the funds/gear/experience to run the shadow lair and valkyrie is probably the best option of the other sets. while the negative fire is a bit of a bummer i dont think it will cause you much trouble as long as you're careful. just dont wear it in fire strata :P. the grey owlite shield is awesome but i think a more natural pairing for valkyrie would be the dread skelly, mainly because you will be wearing it in shadow strata (though now that i think about it maybe the fire resist on the shield would help out with the armors weakness. bear in mind its status resists only apply when you have your shield up, otherwise they do nothing.)

You don't need a shadow set

You don't need a shadow set in the first place, unless you are crazy and are going to do fiends strats. Undead are not that bad and you don't need to protect specifically against them.

If you need some shadow resist to run shadow snarby lair, Silvermail is a probably a better option. And it can be paired with any normal/elemental armor to have average resist everywhere. And it doesn't have negative fire resist. And it has undead bonus damage, which is arguably better than fiend bonus damage (most players just avoid fiends altogether).

Overall, Owlite is more useful than Skelly, just because elemental is more frequent, and fire and shock are the worst status. But i would advise, if possible to also get a shadow shield. There are only 2, and the other is Vanaduke token reward.
