this isnt really a guide but more of me just asking certain questions and hoping someone will respond to them, so i currently have an ascended calibur a faust and graviton bombs i only have 2 weapon slots so i mostly use faust and bombs that both cause shadow damage but because of that i have nothing to deal with undead or fiend and so i would like to ask my fellow knights if Leviathan blade is really worht the 45k crowns i do like the max damage and it certainly looks awesome but im wondering if the range and charge are the same as ive never seen anyone with this weapon so should i buy it or just get a different weapon altogether ?
How to : Leviathan blade ?
CIV is still weaker.
If you want a little more damage to everything, go with levi
if you want a little more damage than that to undead, but less to everything else, go with CIV
not to be skeptical but do you have the current stats for both leviathan and CIV? CIV may not have gotten any stronger, but maybe Leviathan got nerfed? I'd just like to see it for myself, since the undead damage doesnt mean much to me... may end up having to switch my route here!
just got my levy, and it has full normal dmg at lvl10, 3-hits, havent tried it yet but i trust it has little bit larger charge, and it does look cool ;)
ok then now we need someone with a CIV!
i thought i had already figured out the pros and cons of this one. dont care about how one looks vs the other, just the damage it does!
CIV is just a little bit weaker than Leviathan Blade on Normal Damage at Lv. 10. The advantage against Undead helps.
My guess is Levi does no more than a grand 10 damage more than CIV does, save Undead-types. Now, CIV has a High boost on Undead-types, so relative to this tiny bit more Levi does on everything else, I'd say CIV would do 50 more to Undead-types. Even 50 itself is not all the helpful, let alone 10. Do you think when you're fighting T3 monsters that 10 more damage per swing is really going to help at all? You'll still kill them in, say, 3 hits anyways. At least with CIV you're doing 100 more damage per 2 hits, so you might actually kill the Undead-type with fewer hits. (I know these numbers are not exact, but the relative value is what counts.)
If you ask me, the tiny bonus on the Levi (if any, as rumored) would be so minuscule it would not even help, whereas CIV provides a noticeable increase in damage. Do you see what I'm getting at?
(Also, I have two CIVs. One is Lv10 and the other is currently Lv1, but with a UV of "Damage Bonus vs Undead: High" - the same as the natural bonus - maxing out this "super" CIV's damage bonus vs Undead.)
Ok, not to highjack this thread or anything, but does anyone know where to get the Cold Iron Carver recipe, and subsequently the CIV recipe?
To keep things on topic I'll post the stats of both when i get them (if this thread is still active).
The stats of both appear to be identical. I have even gone into paint and matched up the length of the damage bars: they are exactly the same length. Though, recently the bars of anything have not meant much, as there are already so many tooltips with inaccurate images. (For example, the Faust and Avenger appear to have totally different speeds, yet both have the actual same speed.)
Since they are 4* and 5* recipes you can find the 4* CIC recipe at the second and third terminals, and the 5* CIV recipe at the third terminal.
Y'know, this debate wouldnt exist if they just gave numerical stats. lol.
Thank much tho!
makes sense aeca. i guess i will stick with the CIV plan then :)
Look at both recipes. Leviathan can be found in the store. I have seen CIV and it has 1 letter lest (as in it is on top of the E in damage, where levi is past the E and to the end of the bar) than the Levi.
Also, 10 damage? That little bit will add a LOT more to the spin attack, as does the high boost to undead. If you want a weapon against the undead get an avenger, Leviathan is great for everything and actually weak to the undead. Kats jump around to get a really good spin on and when there are many it is hard to recover while 100 balls of shadow damage and bites are flying your way. The skeletons, especially in the citadel, will grab you or spit fire on you the moment you get close. To get a really good hit with the CIV you need to use the step in to hit them as they walk into you, and even then you can still get hit.
So if you for some reason don't like the avenger/can't get one and you want to kill a lot of undead, then the CIV is totally the best choice.
If you don't actively hunt undead and or have an avenger, leviathan will put a bigger hurting on everything else by a lot.
If you're pro, get a Levi with UV undead high ;P
yea from all the comments i read i think ill get my levi first then my gran faust if notthen ill just get a faust/avenger combo there
The only reason you should get Levi over CIV is if you're too lazy to search out the recipes.
Conrad, my point is that the little bit of damage Levi gives is almost too small to notice (if there truly even is one). I cannot say for sure whether or not Levi even does have a higher attack, because I do not have a Lv10 Levi to try it out with. Also, I'm not sure where you are getting this "E" business from, because the words above the bar say "Normal", not "Damage", not to mention that the bars are actually identical in length when maxed (Levi does start out noticeably higher). (You can screen shot them both and compare them in Paint if you want.)
I'm using the 10 damage as an example, for the sake of relativity. The point is, the amount of damage extra that CIV does to Undead-types is far more than the extra that Levi apparently does to everything else. Why? Because there are 4 (or 5?) other types of monsters that Levi would technically be "better" against. Thus, it is only logical that such a bonus on the Levi would be vastly smaller than the single bonus on the CIV.
Consider the following example:
You are fighting a jelly (500 HP) with your CIV, and it takes 5 hits at 100 damage each. You then fight one with a Levi, and do 120 damage with each hit. After 4 hits you've only done 80 damage extra, putting you at a total of 480, which is not going to change the fact that it still takes you 5 hits total, as you will need 1 more hit to hit the 500 mark.
Now: you are fighting a zombie (also 500 HP) with your Levi, and it takes 5 hits at 120 damage each, as before. You then fight one with your CIV, and do a massive 180 damage with each hit (because the bonus is obviously much bigger). We now see that you kill the zombie in only 3 hits: 180*3 = 540.
All in all: more damage is utterly meaningless if it still takes the same amount of hits. Though there may be some monsters that are killed in less-than-x hits, because the overlap is small enough, the only general scenario a tiny bit more damage is really going to help in, is if you are fighting a boss (but that in itself is a whole other discussion).
QED. ▉
I'm not saying that CIV is better than Levi, I am just trying to disprove all of these theories about "more damage" being better. I don't know about you, but I would much rather slaughter zombies and kats in a considerably smaller amount of hits, than be a bit closer to having one hit knocked off of my kill time for everything else.
Also, if you ask me, I'd rather have a noticeable difference in one category than a barely noticeable difference in a few others. Neither do I mind seeking out the materials and whatnot for one of my favourite weapons in the game. (Not to mention the fact that I hate zombies.)
As a side-note for any future critics: please be sure to read my post through entirely before attempting to make any points against it.
aeca, i know its not reliable, but I think he might be referring to the E in "speed", although it would make sense to compare the letters in "normal"
the max for the leviathan bar goes to the end of the word "normal" (just past the L)
the max for the cold iron vanquisher goes to about the end of the A (just shy of the complete letter)
lord knows what a difference that letter makes in term of damage. also, its old images from the wiki, so i dont know how the stats compare currently, but it sounds like they might be accurate.
maybe we need to get a leviathan / CIV party together to see how many whacks it takes to kill monsters :)
Conrad specifically stated he was using the word "damage": "as in it is on top of the E in damage"... But that's not important anyways.
I can assure you that the bars are visually identical. Look at them in-game. I have just checked them again, for the third time, and they are identical in length.
Regardless, this is not the crux of my argument. In fact, in my above argument, I was actually assuming that Levi did have the higher base damage.
im not trying to poke holes in your argument or anything, im just saying what ive seen that led me to think the leviathan was stronger. i dont have the recipes for either yet, so i cant do a side by side comparison for myself. can you take screenshots to end the dispute? :D
http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/7602/civvslevidamagebars.png
But there is no guarantee bars are accurate, as I've said before.
Assuming the bars are correct, Levi does start out stronger, however they both balance out by Lv10. If the damage difference is rounded down pixel-wise, then I'm sure it's nothing to even consider.
i would think if they bothered to make the image different, that means they actually changed it. i dont think they would have taken an accurate image and replaced it with a non-accurate one either. makes sense to me too.. both items do the same damage, but if you work alittle harder for the right mats, you get a slightly better one.
i'm sold! :) thanks man
Anyways, sorry if I come off as sounding confrontational. I don't mean it to sound this way at all. I'm just trying to end all of these rumors, and back up either possibility with a logical explanation.
In the end, it would make sense for CIV's general damage to be slightly lower than that of Levi's, though in this case refer to my previous argument. However, it would also make sense for CIV to be just plain better, as it is much harder to alchemize than Levi.
I've updated the stats image on the wiki to displace any further confusion. (Though the wiki is going slow right now, so it may take a while for the image to synchronize.) I didn't even realize it was out-of-date when I uploaded the new screen shot art for CIV...
I do quite a bit of weapons leveling as a crafter. I have both blades.
I can't say one blade is better than the other. Since I solo T2 recipe runs and duo T3s, I count on my power-horse weapons to be just fast enough and hit just hard enough to kill regular T2 mobs in a few swings. Enough time to kill something before it has a chance to strike back. Dying is not an option because I have under-leveled blades or guns in my extra weapons slots that I need to upgrade for orders. I can't afford to lose heat.
CIV does kill undead with a few swings but requires an additional swing for other mobs. Lev kills other regular mobs and undead but with a little less damage to undead. This leaves the undead to take a swing so I need to hit-hit-shield (or step back) with Lev. Vice versa for CIV.
I run into to less undead on floors so you would think that a Lev would be good enough for all-purpose farming. But for a crafter, graveyard floors offer lots of heat and rare crafting items like warp dust. Bones can be problem if you can't dispatch them fast enough.
I'd say your first endgame blade should be tailored to the type of activities you do the most. Vile Striker line is popular at the moment because people need multiple Jelly King runs to obtain Sealed Sword and Antigua. Pure bashers have tended toward the fast, multi-strike blade line. Also, if you are in a guild, build your gear and weapons for strategic purposes dependent on the weaknesses of the big bosses your guild is hunting.
I have to agree with Conrad on this part: Get an Avenger-series blade for the undead.
If you are planning your gear around the current end-game, keep in mind that Firestorm Citadel is basically 95% undead, 5% fiends. Avengers are the best way to deal with them in my opinion, which means that a Leviathan Blade would be better to use for everything else. But if you really don't want an Avenger, go for CIV.
I have a DA and a CIV, and personally, I find the CIV more useful on undead-types as well. I can also kill zombies (without being hit) much quicker with a CIV, mostly because of the bonus and the high attack speed. The higher attack speed on CIV is useful because it becomes easier to shield, which is nice on zombies and kats because they can throw an attack at you pretty quick. As always, this is an issue of preference.
Tip: If you can learn to get zombies with all 3 CIV combo hits in a row, they're done for. Also, the charge for the Calibur line is very useful for surrounding mobs. I do find the DA charge to be more useful with certain arenas in FSC, though. (Such as the one with the layer of spikes in the middle and loads of zombies popping up.)
personally im just looking for a 5-star sword to get me from top to bottom without necessarily beating any bosses. then im going to work on crafting more specific sets of weapons/protective gear to tackle challenges like bosses. would be good to beat up on undead, enjoy tackling graveyards.
ive been thinking about it and i think ill just get an avenger and have my avenger/faust combo goin if i ever feel the need for a range weapon i suppose ill just switch i kinda like the three hit combo for CIV but the charge attack on avenger just seems more practical for me
I did a T2 run with a friend today. I have an Ascended Calibur and he has a Cold Iron Vanquisher. We both have equipment that gives a Medium bonus to sword damage (I have Dusker set; he has Ash Tail set). In a graveyard on floor 10, I was doing 97 damage against the zombies while he was doing 107 damage. However, on floor 11, while I was still doing 97 damage against all enemies, my friend only did 92 damage!
Keep in mind that Ascended Calibur is a 4* weapon. All of our equipment was maxed so its not an issue of uneven comparison. What's going on here?!
actually that seems pretty damm weird can anyone support this ?
I just crafted a new Ascended Calibur. At Lv1 it's doing 95 damage against Beasts at depth 9. That's only 2 damage less than my Lv10 AC (97 damage) and still 4 more than my friend's Lv10 CIV (91 damage).
Hi guys, does Levi's charge attack same as CIV? Thanks.
Levi's charge attack (and all its attacks) are the same in form as CIV, but the damage is not identical. Levi does more damage in general, and CIV does more damage to undead, of course, as the tooltip suggests. However, they both have the same three-strike combo and 360 degree spin attack that all the calibur line has.
i have a CIV and its at lvl 10. the damage is maxed out. same damage as the levi.
Just because the bars are 'maxed' doesn't mean they can't still keep going, look at the dang stonetort/omega, that bar is practically maxed on the first item.
'oh, the levi only does X more damage, it's nothing'
it IS something if you land Y hits with it...so... X*Y = all the damage you lose without it.
Or just have every weapon and not worry, fin.
Give me some weeks and I'll get some numbers. Bars are terrible.
This debate seems to be purely speculation for some reason, when all you have to do is get someone with both swords attack the same mob.
Levi does more damage than CIV, I had both lines, so I know. Got rid of my CIV for being a crappy sword. As a matter of fact, the damage gap between the two sword is so ridiculous that Levi ends up doing around the same amount of damage to undead than a CIV
Edit: Actually, if you check out this forum post, you'll see many other players complaining about how Cold Iron line SUCKS. http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/4205
If anybody has any ACTUAL numbers. Please add them to the wiki: (Remember, Weapons must be LV10 and no damage enhancing UV's may be used during testing)
@Shanks. Ah, I remember that post. Good times.
I'm surprised no one has added number for the Levi on wiki yet.
Just a casual bump.
why not get both CIV and LEV? then u don't have to have this discussion at all XD hehehehhee...i personally like my lev more than CIV..purely because of the med attack speed UV it has =D
For me, the problem between the two swords isn't really the damage per blow they deal. My only problem with the CIV is that it has miniscule knock-back compared to the Leviathan. I know this may be a good thing to some people though (Levi-charging noobs sending a lumber flying into you and all), but I use my Leviathan's charge to protect my gunners and other teammates. In my opinion, the reason to not have tremendous knock-back is to land more, if not all, of your hits with a charge, i.e. the cutter series. For me, if the the CIV didn't have any knock-back and got to land every blow in a charge shot, I would totally get it. But, since the sword only knocks enemies far enough away that it can't land the last two hits, it isn't worth me getting it. Especially since the enemies you're hitting are still in range to strike back! If I'm only going to land one hit on an enemy I want the enemies to fly across the screen where they have no hope of hurting me or my cohorts! >:D
I don't know. What do y'all think? Ô_o
Levi>CIV not because of damage, but because it has crowd control properties. The ability to push monsters around is the Calibur line's distinguishing mark- it is basically a low radius, zero fuse, high-knockback bomb. Just like any crowd-control weapon it can be misused.
CIV might gain a marked advantage over the Levi in FSC, but in ordinary graveyards I find Ash/Volt bombs to be far more effective. My method for dealing with a graveyard entails waking up a room, cooking them in Ash/Volt and cleaning up with a sword or gun. Teammates without bombs need only hang back for a bit while the zombies fry, and on solo runs, a single Ash burn puts them at low enough health to take out with a single hit from almost any weapon.
Why was this thread necromanced?
We've got enough dark rituals going on with the Konjuring Kat, thank you very much.
But yeah, I built the CIV and regretted it ever since. And not in a "grass is always greener" way.
hmmm.. i guess youre stuck on the path for leviathan huh? i am going to the cold iron vanquisher or whatever. i heard that the damage stats for both are the same now, which I guess would mean the wiki data is out of date.. not sure if thats true or not. i am still at the tempered calibur level so i could swing either way, but others got me set on the cold iron idea.
that said, im pretty sure the leviathan is still a good weapon. might not be great in all situations, but since youre on the path, maybe you should just go ahead? i mean, i suppose its cheaper to start over, right? but by how much? and then you have to get all the recipes/mats for a different series.
plus you can update the wiki when you get it! ;)
