I laughed.

So basically, I had some CE that I needed to get rid of, or "waste" if you want.
Started with about 60 k CE, spent about 50 k CE on silver keys. Then bought like, a lot of the boxes for about 1,5 k crowns in the AH, and then later on, when I got a lot of people to watch me open all those boxes, they started selling me lock boxes for about 400-500 crowns, and some of them even gave me theirs for free (: !!
So after wasting a LOT... The server did a reboot, aaand by the way, I didn't get ONE wolver tail, aura, halo, nor wings.
So before you go out there and waste your ass off, reconsider it.
It was a lot of fun though, that I admit.
--------------------
Funny thing is that when I opened my FIRST lock box in Spiral Knights, like a few weeks ago or so, I got both the auras, a shadow key, AND everything else I was hoping for c:
But no halo, no wolver tail, no wings, noooo vitakit. So yes, it seems that when I actually TRY to get the good stuff, I fail. And when I don't have any intention in getting, let's say, a shadow key, I get it (:{
Just sharing my experiences with the lock boxes }:s

What, no, I got my shadow key, and both auras from my first tries |:
Which was a few weeks ago :/

Post everything you got on those 60k ce worth of keys

It was a bunch of useless accessories, that's for sure! (:{

proof that the chances of getting good stuff is about 0.0003%
i have 3 accesories right now, toasty canteen,heavy helm-mounted display and heavy com unit... and i find absolutely absurd the way i got them, i only opened 3 lockboxes after the release of the accesories update... i got a toasty googles, heavy maid headband, and a cool game face... then i decided to sell them away and wait to see what other people got... i saw a lot of maid headbands, headbands, game face and only one ghostly aura... then my friend tells me that there are some ppl in haven 1 opening a lot of lockboxes, i went there and saw how they opened LOTS of lockboxes and nothing really good showed off...only some ghostly auras(don't remember how many) no wings, no bandoliers, no mohawks, no halos, etc. then i decided not to open a lockbox EVER again... and now, the prices of most accesories are between 4-15k (obviously, due to the fatct that they're just too common). anyway... that's how i got my stuff, and i say it again, it's RIDICULOUS, i bought the heavy helm mounted display in AH for 5k, toasty canteen, 15k in AH, and com unit, 20k in ah... now im glad i did not open any of those lockbox i had.
devs got to do something about this... if it's THAT hard to get a good accesory(and even if you do you have to get the right colour), then they should lower the price of silver keys to 100 CE, and no one would complain about insanely rare items and shadow keys anymore...

*Applauds*
Changing the price is ALWAYS a solution.
How it would affect the current economy of the game, I am not sure.
If one silver key was 100 CE, either more people would buy CE to get keys, or the amount of people getting them would stay the same, and OOO would LOOSE money by reducing the price.

What would happen is that more lockboxes would be opened, rather than sold, as the price can easily be covered by your mist alone (until it had recharged, that is). People will be more tempted to gamble if the price is low, rather than high, because they can make their money back relatively easy. As it is right now you're risking losing more than half of your investment, and earning it all back is going to take a good couple of runs to buy your energy back. Whether they gain or lose on the price change I don't know, but seeing as so many players have already invested this much money on lockboxes, I doubt it's going to happen without an outrage from those who spent the additional 650 Crystal Energy.

@Martinsen
the only viable option i can think of, without having to change the whole lockbox system, is reducing prices, how it would affect the economy, well... as we know, most of accesories are already undervalued, they are surely going to be even more cheap... almost free (like 1.5k crowns) but rarer stuff will now have an actual chance of popping up out of one'o those money-wasting gambling-addictive lockboxes. (so the main goal is that you avoid wasting loads of money in a silly gamble of unexisting chances)
but you do hev a point, since i don't know how many shadow keys would be unboxed , and if too many players get shadow keys, the prices will go down and down, shadow lairs getting farmed and bla bla bla...
but still, i can't imagine another possible way to fix this... maybe if they remove Shadow keys from the lockboxes and lower the price of silver keys to 100 ce, as i said before, and make boost to sell the shadow keys again, everyone was happy with it. (or at least most of the ppl i know)

Nobody ever said the price SHOULD be reduced to 100 CE. It could be any price. Also, you're saying that this would affect the way people are making profit out of the shadow lairs. Not everyone are into farming you know. Some people actually play the lairs to get the rewards, not to sell them l:
you got all that from one lock box ahahaha
waist of space
