I recently got my girlfriend to start playing Spiral Knights and she's coming over so I can more easily help her get started. I am aware of the ME link that doesn't go away unless you pay (which I don't plan on doing anytime to be honest), but how is that determined? Is it if you're using the same computer or the same IP address or what? I don't want to help her through a T1 run only to find out I have 6 ME left on my own account.
Exactly what determines ME linkage?
I don't know if the Energy FAQ is correct. http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Energy_FAQ
Because it states that you can have up to 3 accounts on 1 computer. But I have 4.
I hear from some people it's based on IP address, and from other people it's based on different computers.
But not entirely sure.
The Energy FAQ seems to say it's based on computers, ie the 3rd example listed.
In my experience, the ME link is based on computer, not IP. I've had a friend sign onto her computer using my internet, and her ME was still intact.
As for the number of accounts, it's unlimited number of paid accounts and two free accounts.
I strongly suspect that the code used to link ME is very similar to the code OOO has long used to detect ban evaders in OOO's puzzle pirates and Spiral Knights. (Remember: A ban is against the player, not against the knight, nor the account. When OOO bans you from the game, they mean *you*.) As such, I doubt that OOO will give an exact specification of how they detect that ME should be linked between accounts. It is not just your IP address, since that can be hidden and changed via NAT. It is not just files with a list of accounts that a computer has used. I have some guesses about what other things OOO uses, but listing my guesses would only help ban evaders, so I won't.
As Broxaim linked to, the Energy FAQ should answer most of your questions and keep legitimate players in the clear.
I would think MAC address would be what they use to determine if the computer is the same.
I'm not sure if it's IP or account. But if your girlfriend comes and uses all the ME on your computer, it affects the accounts used on it. Both her and your account will be left with 6 ME.
