Different melee weapon types?

I've noticed that there are a scant few melee weapons that are any shape other than swords, which seems like such a shame when there are so many other forms that melee weapons can take. Lances, polearms, and flails/blunt weapons would fit the overall "science fiction meets medieval knights" theme that the game has going, don't you think? I can see why this might not be a high priority, considering the huge variety and popularity of melee weapons in the game, but still.

Plus, having weapons with differing reaches would make for an interesting play experience in coordinated parties - having a blast bomber with a flail so that his overall build is centered around keeping enemies at a distance, coupled with a character with a high-end reach weapon to take care of the now-distant enemies, for example. Or maybe having a lance-type weapon (they are knights, after all) that gains benefits from the speed bonuses of the mercurial mail or mercurial demo suit. Perhaps melee weapons that can be thrown (e.g. axes) that gain benefits from ranged weapon bonuses, so that the gunners can do things at closer ranges?

true

i agree, we need a wide arsenal of weapons not just swords, guns, and bombs. a bow would be nice.

Aesthetically, I'm fine with it.

Functionally, though, quite a few of these ideas have already been built into swords.

Having a blast bomber with a flail so that his overall build is centered around keeping enemies at a distance.
The heavy swords, particularly the Troika lines, work wonders with knocking back enemies. That and Calibur.

coupled with a character with a high-end reach weapon to take care of the now-distant enemies.
Well if you don't want to use guns there's always fast swords - they lunge you towards distant enemies.

Perhaps melee weapons that can be thrown (e.g. axes) that gain benefits from ranged weapon bonuses, so that the gunners can do things at closer ranges?
Autoguns were created with the intention of giving the gunner lethality at point blank range, while still being able to hit stuff at longer ranges.

In all honesty I'm pretty much for the idea, but if you do give suggestions it might be tricky to convince the player base and OOO that these weapons are different. Would definitely love to see more non-sword weapons, and kudos to you if you do pull this off.

tl;dr: +1 for me, but you need to differentiate them from existing weapons.

The game does need a spear

The game does need a spear though. There is no heavy piercing weapon.

I was thinking more along the lines of fast weapons...

Actually I was thinking that the spear could have a 2 hit lunge combo, but still attack relatively faster than other 'heavy' weapons - since a spear isn't that heavy IRL.
And we already have the Flourish which basically covers piercing and lunging attacks, unfortunately.
Would love to see a spear, halberd, voulge etc etc. in-game though.

well a spear "IRL" can vary

well a spear "IRL" can vary greatly in terms of weight, though a fast weapon is definitely my preference. i would prefer a faster, long-ranged weapon that can reach in to interrupt an attack or to just keep enemies at bay. basically something that fills the space of "no-man's land" where you are too far to cut with a sword but a little too close for sustained gunning. i dont know about a 2 hit lunge combo - it seems like it would turn a spear into a very guerilla tactics weapon. long ranged but very linear attacks would mean enemies can always swarm from around the narrow attack radius, forcing you to run or run/shield if there is more than one monster. in principle a spear is meant to attack enemies before they close in and therefore needs at least one wide swing. i think a 4 hit combo would be great, where the first swing is wide and slow, followed by 2 quick stabs and then another wide swing.
