Are gates supposed to lose rings?

Logging in today it looks like several in-progress gates have less rings than they had previously. I can't be sure of others but I am 100% sure of this one:

Yesterday this gate (amber bishop?) had a full six rings, now it has 5.5 roughly.

Kharnor and others could likely verify this gate had more rings yesterday.

This happened last time the new gates were about to go live, and the resulting gates barely went below ember, but I was less sure about their previous state. (For the record I was most sure of the coral clover gate. It had 6 rings for days, then a day before going live it went down to 4ish rings. It is open now and doesn't go below ember at all)

I don't know enough about how the gates work to know if this is a bug, but it looks to us players like gate building progress is disappearing.

backward progress on gates

Thanks for pointing this out.

We're still making lots of adjustments behind the scenes, and this has resulted in the gates requiring more minerals to reach the same depth. We will make some changes to "lock in" the progress so that it won't go backwards again. Hopefully we can get those in sometime in the next week. In the meantime: thanks for your patience, observations, and reporting.

That makes sense :) Thanks

That makes sense :) Thanks for letting us know.

I don't envy your job of balancing how many materials are needed for gate production. Too few and core gates are guaranteed, and less interesting. Too much and core gates are too rare for the gates to be interesting or engaging below ember. Add in a variable amount of players and mineral earnings and that is a lot of fun :P Good luck! :)
