Now that performance tweaking is officially a thing, I think it deserves its own wiki page. I've already pasted Endymion's post to my user page temporarily but I haven't added any additional information yet. The main reason is that I need to log out of the wiki to log in through steam just so I can post here. The other reason is that, while I may seem to know a lot about tweaking JVM performance, I tend to have trouble providing just the "need to know" information to an average reader. Usually I end up simply infodumping all the gritty details that nobody cares about.

Hopefully someone is willing to dig through the partially filtered information already available in the forum thread I linked and refine it into a more palatable document. Preferrably before I have time to force myself to try. At the very least, feel free to share your thoughts and experimentation results either on the temporary page or its associated discussion page. I would really like to see this project get made into an official FAQ too!

Merge it with performance issues FAQ?

Hi,

I believe it should be merged into the Performance issues FAQ page.
Maybe under a new section titled "Tweaking for advanced users"?

I agree with Sk-Tactics in

I agree with Sk-Tactics in that it would probably best fit under the Performance issues FAQ. I'm usually poking around at the FAQs on the wiki, so if you want something said feel free to unload a pile of info here and I'll do my best to convert it to a wiki format.

Maybe unnecessary

Upon further reflection, I've decided that much of the information I could provide is not probably not needed on this wiki. Most of the settings I've been blogging about were only necessary because the maximum heap size could not be changed (with the usual exception of a custom launcher). Within the last 2 weeks, significant changes have allowed players to tweak launch settings and provided new defaults that should make extra tweaking unnecessary for most people.

I think Hyperion's original post reworded to fit the context of the Performance Issues FAQ should be enough for this wiki with respect to JVM tuning. In my opinion, we should document the availability of performance tweaking but not encourage it because better solutions have already been introduced to make it (at least partially) superfluous.

Links to Sun's/Oracle's documentation on ergonomics, JVM options, and GC tuning could be helpful to provide a starting point for those who still wish to tinker. I tend to be paranoid, however, so I fear providing those links may serve as an endorsement to read them and/or that any of the settings presented in those documents are necessary (most of them aren't even useful). I just don't want to introduce more tech support work for either the community or the devs.
