I just started Spiral Knights a few hours ago. A passerby took me on my first Snarbolax run, and needless to say right now I'm hooked.

I was able to get a Calibur crafted through the use of my first Mist Tank, after which my friend gave me a Wolver Coat. I then went to the Auction House and paid for a Wolver Helm, and am now in the process of saving up for a gun (or so my new friend asked me to).

What I'd like to know is this: Why specifically a gun? Is the Tier 2 Boss weak to projectiles or something? I know that with Snarbolax, he's most vulnerable to swords (and that's AFTER you expose him via the bell), however, since I'm not at all used to the game, I keep wondering why it's mandatory to bring a gun to the Tier 2 Clockworks.

Another thing is that I heard about sets "growing" as if they're alive. Do they evolve or something, and if so, how does this work?

One last question: I recently got some crests from Snarbolax (can't remember how many, nor could I even figure it out), but according to my friend, they can be traded in. Wherein is this NPC located, and what is the cheapest item I can get from him?

I thank you all in advance, and hope we can meet sometime in the near future!

In closing silence,

Renvalt von Kaiser

ANSWER

Hello new player(or whatever your name is) You have questions I have answers.
- hooked did you lose?
- if yes you should now that SNARBY is unvulnerable until stunned,(vials dont work to)
- you should be a swordie with a bacup gun i prever autogun-pepperbox
- yed a gun IS usefull in T2.
- they level up to level 10 leveling items increases their power, defence ,resistance
- growing means NOT EVOLVING but well take targe shield its weak at 2star and has damge bonus for swords:low
-but at 5 star its almost so devensive like the aegis and has a damge bonus for swords low
-DONOT TRADE YOUR SHIELD TO A VENDOR
-he will buy it for 750cr
- and that shield is AWESOME when 3 star and up

Answer:

Handguns are not a requirement. But the most important factor in Spiral Knights is survival, which is easily accomplished by being more versatile. This means that you are geared for many different situations.

Some enemies that you may face are best taken out from a distance, as it increase your chance of survival against that particular mob that is very nasty in close quarters. With that being said, handguns are an alternative way of being versatile.

However, you can still use purely one weapon type, be it sword, handgun, or bomb, there are a wide variety of weapons in each weapon type that do different kinds of damage, but it doesn't hurt to have a weapon you can use at long range, to be safe while you're low on health, waiting for a heart to drop.

Welcome! I remember my first

Welcome! I remember my first Snarby run and how clueless all of us were. It's great that you've managed to learn how to him before going in and wiping out like I did. :)

As for guns--I'm not sure, but in T1, possibly all the gunpuppies are reachable by sword, but in T2, there are instances in which gunning a puppy is the best way to stay alive. Since you have a Calibur, I'd recommend you to get an elemental gun, since puppies are either weak or neutral to ele damage. If you don't know about the damage types yet, going here would be highly recommended. All the mobs in T1 do normal damage, but you should start watching out for the strata themes and plan out your gears for T2. Note that the two bosses for T2 have pierce (Jelly King) or elemental theme (Roar Twins), so you might want to consider getting an elemental set or piece for the twins--Wolver/Dusker is perfect for JK. Actually, JK is the main source of money maker in T2, so you might want to exclusively farm those levels.

If you join in a boss run at the floor under Basil or earlier, you'll usually get 3 tokens, sometimes 4 if you're lucky. You can trade these tokens/seals/crests/whatever they're named to Brinks, who's at the bottom 'floor' of the Bazaar, far left. Here is a list of his wares so you can plan out your gears. The shield you can get using Snarby's tokens is well worth is, as is the bomb and sword. If you'd like to go the swordsman path, I'd recommend you making enough runs to get both the sword and shield. The sword bonus on the shield is a medium at 5*, and since there are two types of pierce swords, getting the Snarble Barb fits a swordsman's needs nicely. Snarby levels are great for farming because the theme is beasts, which gives materials that sell well.

The evolving weapon thing is what we call 'heating'. Basically, when you have a piece of new equipment and you look closely at the stat bars, there's a chunk at the end that's a deeper blue. When the weapons are fully heated (level 10), the light blue bar goes all the way to where the dark bar ends. In essence, your weapon or armour grows stronger when it's heated to a higher level. Heat is earned from killing mobs and breaking boxes in Clockworks. Also, when you make your 2* items into 3* items, they must be leveled to 5 before they can be made into 4*s. To make 5*s, your 4*s must be fully heated (level 10). Here is a good read about what I just tried (and probably failed...) to describe.

If you're interested in planning out or choosing a weapon, the Wiki is a great place to look for information. If you searchforums.spiralknights.cominger guide', 'swordmaster guide', or 'shieldbearer guide', you can find a lot of great recommendations and discussion. Of course, asking in the forums is a good way to learn as well. What th' bloody hell, forum? Why did you bork up this sentence and not let me edit it?! Every time I hit "preview", it just does this agagin. Well, the links are above, so this is a moot point, but my perfectionist tendencies make this infuriating. Dx

Hopefully you'll enjoy your time in SK for a while to come!

Tier 2 Havoc

Thanks for the answers!

After a (not-so)long journey, I have made it to Tier 2! However, due to the overwhelming nature of the area, I feel like my 2 star gear is inadequate.

Here's what I currently possess (equipped and in inventory):

(Note: Equipped items are marked with a ^ to denote under equips, and ^^ to denote cosmetic wear)
-Arms-

2* Snarble Barb ^
2* Calibur
2* Shadowtech Alchemer ^
2* Autogun
0* Proto Sword
0* Proto Gun

-Bodygear-

2* Wolver Cap ^
2* Cobalt Helm ^^
2* Wolver Coat ^
1* Spiral Scale Helm
1* Spiral Scale Armor
0* Spiral Sallet
0* Spiral Cuirass

-Recipes-

3* Tempered Calibur
2* Cobalt Helm
2* Calibur
1* Spiral Scale Mail
1* Spiral Scale Cuirass

Based on this current list, would you have any suggestions on what to add to this.... Spiral Deck of mine? And if so, could you factor in a cost estimate, as well as an estimate of how long it would take me to accumulate enough to get said items?

You need something that deals

You need something that deals elemental damage to deal with undead/constructs, specially turrets.

well just some suggestions

well just some suggestions for future equips...
Try to save money by collecting materials in the clockworks and crafting your weapons/armor. Not only is it a little bit cheaper (a lot bit later on) but you also have a chance to get a Unique Variant (i think i saw a link to this above). Crafting and buying 3* gear is pretty close, but you can save some time on materials if you want, and pay another 1-5k crowns to buy 3* weapons if you want, however, don't buy 4* gear. Unless your really rich, try to find materials and craft them, its definitely cheaper. If you dont want to wait you can always buy materials in the auction house.

Also twitt is right, get a decent elemental gun for now. Don't spend too much money on it tho, sense you will most likely want to get a pulsar once your start doing Roarmulus Twins.

And as a last bit of advice, I wouldn't use crowns to get "costume" armor yet. Looks come with time :P. So for now i wouldn't upgrade that colbalt helm.

You'll want to decide what

You'll want to decide what you're going to be early on in the game. This saves a lot of frustration later. (e.g. Swordsman, gunner, bomber, hybrid, Civilian)
Your wolver gear is popular for fulfilling the role of a swordie for its sword damage bonuses. (Wolver is the Swordie set, Gunslinger armor is the gunner set, Bomber armor is for bombers, and mixes are for hybrids. Equipping nothing useful are for Civilians.)

Try to avoid hits in T2. This is what kills a lot of people transitioning from T1 to T2. T1's damage is puny, so Newbies use the same berserker attack they used in T1 for T2 - which, needless to say, gets them killed easily.

Don't upgrade your Snarble sword if you plan on doing T2 Boss stratums later. A piercing sword is pretty much worthless for this - but keep it anyway. Its still useful.

As a recommendation, upgrade your Calibur to 3* first. Most people prioritize upgrades for their stuff as follows: Weapons first, shield second, Armor third.
Getting a Tempered Calibur will take about two days, along with getting other 3* armors and shields.
Sell your Scale armor stuff. It's not useful anymore.

I'd also be glad to help you out more in the game. Send me a message @ Bluedigit

Non-elemental Sword + Elemental Gun

When I run with just two weapon slots (I play an alt that way), I find it best to take a sword and gun, and I tend to use my gun whenever I'm not up against something that dodges. (Wolvers, gremlins, and devilites will dodge bullets.)

Elemental guns are the most useful for me. I now have several to choose between based on the stratum, but the best to get first is a cryotech alchemer because it will help you survive best. In 2* gear, surviving tier 2 is more important than clearing levels quickly, and freeze will help you survive. Freezing gun puppies, retrodes, and howlitzers will stop them from aiming at you. Freezing enemies will allow you or your teammates to hit it safely from behind and thus avoid taking damage. (Note: some enemies, notably mechaknights, have attacks that affect a 360-degree area, so maintain caution even when they are frozen.)

With an elemental gun, you can take your snarble barb and do more damage to beasts and fiends. Never take two weapons of the same damage type with only two slots, but you can take two typed weapons as long as they are different types. That way you use your elemental gun against things strong against piercing (constructs, which are weak to elemental, and slimes, which are neutral) and use the sword against beasts and fiends. I would take that snarble barb to any beast or fiend stratum, because it will be very useful to have the extra piercing damage. In other strata, you can stick with the calibur if you prefer it.

u might consider also getting

u might consider also getting a bomb, therye quite usefull and some deal special status effects.
try getting one of the vaporizers.
btw, dont buy recipes under 3-star. getting the equipment will be cheaper if bought from a vendor or the auction house.
when u think u have enough crowns, buy/craft some armor with elemental defense (magic, demo, drake and so on) and/or shadow (skelly).
shadow defense will be usefull for fiends, and elemental for constructs.
t2 isnt that bad, but youre used to t1: only normal dmg, monsters have less attacks etc.... dont worry, youll get better, with some practice.
some say that to survive stratum 3 u need 3-star gear, but thats not necessairly true.
try to plan your equipment bases on the lvl youre in.
i also suggest you go on some jelly palace runs, since theyll give you a nice amount of crowns and your wolver gear and shadowtech alchemer will be very necessary there. the calibur is a good choice too, just dont bring the snarble barb, and in roarmulous runs, also dont bring a snarble barb, and bring some elemental armour and shield.
btw, i noticed u didnt mention yur shields. here is some advice: owlite(elemental), plate shield (high normal)and defender(piercing/normal). also skelly if u feel its necessary.
i hope u have fun!
