For discussion and questions from the announcement today.
SEGA has acquired Three Rings!
Okay first question: does this add the possibility of having more servers spread over the world to improve latency on regions like South America, Asia, Australia , etc?
"SEGA has a very strong presence in the UK"
please EU servers
please
Is the SEGA acquisition going to change the state of OOO's free java libraries? (Vilya, Narya, Nenya, Clyde, getdown, so on and so forth) I haven't gotten the time to play with them, and it would be a shame if I didn't get to do so.
from my point of view i have no idea what to conclude from that piece of information other than eventually connecting every major changes from now on with...sega?
some lawyer explanations pwease~
So this is an official acquisition for Sega its not at at any type of merger?
If it is an acquisition how do we know all our key developers and game artists will be around for the long-run?
Reading your statement on the Three Rings page I do understand why, but do you think this will personally destroy the vision of Three Rings ( In the sense I know you guys wanted to bring entertainment to gamers all across the world, but do this with a more so family community)?
Will you Daniel James aka Captain Cleaver be apart of Sega, and if so what role will you be taking (job title)?
Does this mean your Human Resource Department grew?
Will Boswick still have his baby sister Nick to look after him?
Thank You For Your Response.
I don't really know what to make out of this. I hope it's for the best.
I'm scared of one possibility though: http://media.spiralknights.com/wiki-images/5/55/Boswicksega.png
Maybe this is good with sonic the hedgehog armor? Oh plz sega plz?
A very hearty congratulations to the The Three Rings team!
I've been a proud supporter of Three Rings since I first found Puzzle Pirates in January of 2004.
Having sailed those seas for over 7 years, I was ready to put aside my eye patch & peg leg to roam the gates of Spiral Knights. Along the way, I also enjoyed their other projects, including Whirled, Bang! Howdy and Game Gardens.
Having experienced the wonderful worlds Three Rings dreamed up for me, I'm delighted Sega has spotted these amazing talents also.
I truly hope OOO and Sega will keep me entertained for years to come.
Your devoted supporter,
Manta
To Njthug's questions:
- SEGA is acquiring Three Rings' outstanding stock. The board is now SEGA folks, myself and Tom, so yes, it's an acquisition not a merger.
- I don't have a crystal ball enough to tell you about the 'long run' -- everyone on the team is an at-will employee, for example, who could leave at their own volition at any time. We obviously hope they won't, and hope to keep everyone beavering away on the good stuff. For now there are no plans to change the dev team lineup.
- I don't think this will destroy the vision of Three Rings; SEGA has similar goals in terms of reaching a broad audience with innovative titles.
- I will be a part of SEGA, remaining CEO of Three Rings (a division of SEGA) and reporting to the new board and a VP at SEGA. I have no plans to go anywhere, indeed I'm excited to be able to focus more on our games and less on making sure we make payroll every month (we always have).
- We don't really have an HR department, but SEGA does, and they will be helping us out a bit, again allowing some of our staff to do more interesting things.
- Nick will have to answer about Boswick
Re: Linteleor's code question: there are no plans to change the status of our open source libraries.
Okay great to know Cleaver, so I think you got a great deal out of this don't know if there was any money exchanging hands, but I am sure there was. Now like you said you can focus on building and designing great games for myself and others to play, and Boswick who will destroy the games. Personally, I am glad to know more information your post did answer all my questions, and hope we can see more of your work in Spiral Knights. Enjoy your new role I am sure you will.
> Now like you said you can focus on building and designing great games for myself and others to play, and Boswick who will destroy the games.
So mean to poor Boswick!
So, so mean.
;)
Congrats to the OOO crew, I hope you don't let all that money go to your heads. ;) That said, you have my permission to buy some ball chairs and get them custom painted as SK escape pods to make a matching lounge to the tentacle-couch one for Puzzle Pirates.
But seriously, I hope this ushers in a new era of more reliable paycheques, and not an era of more meddling from above.
Now that SK is run by a public company, what changes do you expect with respect to how developers respond to end users?
One thing I like about SK is its openness in developer-user interaction. But now that SK is run by a public company (Sega), I would expect some sort of restriction at some point. (Well, nobody wants Sega's stock to drop because of mis-communication or rumours on SK forum, right?) Does that mean the forum would become more heavily moderated in the future?
My worry is that this transition (from OOO to Sega) could cause resentment inside some of the SK population. And in some extreme cases, people could launch DDoS attacks on SK servers, thus disrupting the game play experience of the majority population. I'm not saying this would happen of course (no one wants to). But it is something OOO and Sega need to be mindful about during the transition period.
By chance, is the Elevator pass update a coincidence?
I think it's just coincidence. My belief is that OOO has been planning to investigate the possibility of subscription based model. (Elevator pass gives unlimited access to game contents = subscription.)
Subscription based model has the advantage of more predictable revenue stream. e.g. OOO can later release elevator pass package, which consists of 3, 6 or 12 elevator passes for a discounted price. This way they can report revenue early on their book.
Congratulations on OOO for "joining forces" with SEGA so to speak! This will indeed help you guys a lot in the long run. I really doubt the acquisition will really affect future plans on the long run, and will probably indeed expand the playerbase a bit more.
... Yes I secretly want a Sonic the Hedgehog tie in. MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Congrats to OOO. Yall deserve the best.
Does this mean we'll soon get plushies?
will spiral knights still be free?
Yes, it will still be free :)
With the resources of SEGA behind you, is there the possibility of getting international servers? Eg. Australia?
Regardless, congratulations.
Huh. So will anything actually change for the players? The announcement said it would be a good thing...
Oh, and I HATE sonic, so if you do make any kind of "sonic hat" type thing, I'll likely discriminate against (EG unfriend, ignore) users of such a hat.
Congrats OOO, er... Can't really say that now, congrats Sega! ;)
Good to hear this happened for you guys, hope it works out well!
Sonic The hedgehog wolver costume?<3 maybe a code inside the next sonic game for it?
Congratulations!
May you be big, but not big enough to be scoped into a full blown audit.**
**Warning, accountant at play.
Now that OOO is part of SEGA, are there any plans to include any kind of references/etc to other SEGA franchises?
Or use anything from SEGA of any kind (personnel, ideas, franchises, etc).
Also any chance that SEGA gives OOO any of their franchises to develop, or will the company still focus solely on their original products?
I remember reading Nick wanted to do something like PSO with SK, it wouldn't surprise me if he put some easter egg references.
Congratulations OOO, thanks for bringing the game this far, and I hope this new change will affect your games for the better! :)
@Tantarian - I hope there's some Sonic garb, I mean its Three Rings and Sega, I thought it'd have been obvious from the start. Hopefully Sega is afraid enough of our powers of making hate threads to only make the game better... =D
My questions on the matter
Are you still Three Rings?
Will this change effect your current staff? (I've grown quite the liking to many of you!)
Will SEGA's influence be stronger in the game now? Or will OOO continue to be the primary creators for updates ect.
How does this effect previous OOO titled games?
If one were to apply to work at Three Rings, Do they now do such through Sega? Or are you in charge of your own staff still?
Well Three Rings, if you're happy, I'm happy. Best of luck to you as part of Sega and I reckon this is just the start of even more good things to come from you. I'm keen to see you bring the Doctor Who game out - if anyone can make a decent game from the best show the BBC has, you can.
Thanks all! A few answers to questions:
> Eltia wrote: Now that SK is run by a public company, what changes do you expect with respect to how developers respond to end users?
We don't expect any changes. SEGA likes to engage with their players and hasn't make any indications that we should back off.
> Juances: By chance, is the Elevator pass update a coincidence?
Yep. No connection at all.
> Culture: Does this mean we'll soon get plushies?
Oh man, I want a plushie cube! So bad.
> Bigfoottm: Congrats OOO, er... Can't really say that now, congrats Sega! ;)
You can still say OOO -- we're still OOO, we just have a new parent company.
> Kuger: Various questions on continuity
No planned changes to staff. We are still the primary creators, we'll continue to work with SEGA as we have already for the last ~year. No effect on previous OOO games... and we still have our own jobs page.
I have been talking to my guild members. We have this funny feeling that the elevator pass is OOO's way to test water for subscription based business model. Our concern is that if Sega pushes for mandatory P2P (because that's where the money are), it seems unlikely that OOO would not comply with the request.
So our question is that, when that happens, what does OOO have to offer that would retain SK population?
Personally I found SK to be a fun game. It's F2P nature is a great way to attract different types of causal gamers and interacting with these people are good experience. I like to see more story development and better support for high end machines (e.g. provide an anti aliasing option). The whole Shadow Lairs seem to be opening up to a new, interesting story arc. It would be sad that if this game goes P2P under Sega's pressure and people have to leave the game without seeing the full scope of the story.
So if SK does go the inevitable P2P path, I hope OOO has this planned out so that there will not be a massive drain of population.
Congrats :D
Just a quick question, will we (us SK players) get some commemorative items to celebrate the merger?
perhaps a OOO/SEGA badge or armband :D?
Congrats! I'm interested in what this could yield for the future of SK. Bigger and better things? References to other Sega games?
A Metal Sonic costume would fit perfectly...
So, does this mean that SEGA is going to influence OOO decisions more now? Are they getting involved with what you guys will be doing with SK or does this just mean that you're under their name and everything is going to continue like how it was previously?
Is this going to be the new Three Rings logo? http://i39.tinypic.com/eg76dk.gif
Congrats to the staff at OOO! I've always admired the way you do business, and hope to see your creativity shine with the support of a larger distributor behind you- I've seen Cleaver comment many times that marketing is a big challenge for a small independent studio.
With the recent collaboration between OOO and Sega on Spiral Knights, I'm not entirely surprised that Sega is making this move... given that Sega has full access to the books, this also strikes me as a vote of confidence in the future success of SK and games like it.
I know that Sega has offices in SF, so hopefully a few of their lucky staff will get the chance to join you in the Nautilus. (...I like to imagine that the merging of cultures will go in the direction of more people like the ringers, not less)
@Kingrt They should make special edition horn-rimmed hipster glasses, because we were into SK before it went big and sold out. ;)
@Tan -- I think you just won't a chair in Three Rings Marketing department congrats
@Pauling -- Glad to see you back we missed you.
@Eury -- I am not mean to Boswick he picks on me all the time you just don't know it.
@Cleaver
Good, I'm used to saying that, it would take a while o get use to saying Sega. ;) Again, good to hear this news. Also, I will give you a brimstone AND a ecto drop if you give me a Snipe plushie, that's like, the best deal ever. What do you say? :D
@Eurydice
Boswick does bully Njthug sometimes, I've seen it. :'( Boswick needs to be nice to Njthug, atleast Boswick gave me a brimstone of imagination! I sold it on the AH for 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 imaginary crowns, and became rich. I think Boswick or Nick took them for their lunch though. :( Do you know?
Once again, congrats OOO!
The happier you are, the better outcomes happen in life.
Congratulations OOO, you are truly unique.
Congratulations Three Rings (and SEGA) on the new connection. I'm sure there are many good things to come out of this in the coming years! :)
I know I expressed a bit of pessimism on Whirled regarding this announcement, but after giving it time for the news to sink in... it's not horrible at all, on the contrary, it's good news ^^ I can truly say that I'm absolutely jubilant about this partnership, and look forward to what OOO and SEGA will build together ^^
(And AMG, PAULING! DUDE we were just talking about you in our guild. C'mere you <3 )
(Pauling and Saphy playing SK?! Add 2 more to the classic CBers list!)
I'll see how this will affect SK on a longer time.
Since I'm not sure how big SEGA's influence on OOO was before they acquired OOO, I have no idea what to expect ;). Let's hope the best.
