I see this thing in my top right corner, no idea what it is.
it looks like a black square with a one smaller red square inside it. Is that my ping?
I'm from Australia so I'd expect it to be terrible.
Is there an indicator for ping (latency) in the game?

Yep, it's an indication of connection strength. In terms of ping, 1 small, red bar = high ping and 4 grey bars = low ping.
It is indeed your ping, there are 4 bars on a good connection.
