I like the idea of being more tanky but I just don't know if its a viable sidegrade considering its drawback (less attack speed). Should I work for it?

Depends on your playstyle, and weather you prioritize killing the enemy or not getting killed.
I think the model is cooler, I don't like the new colors much though, they don't even match the shield.
On par, no.
Has its own use, yes! But that use is mostly ranged to avoid horrible zombie melee death.
