I have a Miracle Hood, Royal Jelly Shield and Vog Cub Coat.

How is the total defense calculated on these items? Does it take all the values in and then divides them? Or is it using the highest values out of all the items?

My Shield does not seem to have any effect on the defense values.

You can view a visual

You can view a visual representation of your total defense on your Knight's info window, by hovering over the first icon on the Loadout Summary. I believe the total defense is simply a sum of all defense values. (These bars may seem lower than the actual values given on the individual equipment, but I'm guessing this is only because the bars are scaled to fit the total width.) Though, we have never been given strict numbers as defense values, only the visual representation via coloured bars. Numbers would be nice, as many of us have said many times before.

Also, I believe the defense values of shields only come in to play when you are blocking with them, i.e. your shield will last longer against the types of damage it has defense against.

If it's a Sum, then that

If it's a Sum, then that would be great.
The shields have a "health" bar which I would assume is they can take X damage before they break and having a defense against an attack type, piercing for example, means Wolvers don't cause as much damage as an undead monster would to that shield.

There where numbers on

There where numbers on defense loooooooong time ago. Don't ask me why they removed them.

Total defense is your helmet + armor values. Shield is a separate entity with it's own life and defense.

Yes, long, loooong ago they

Yes, long, loooong ago they had numbers representing the total values for each type. This means wiki workers had to play with numbers to get out the specific values of each piece of equipment. However, I'm sure all of those numbers (and the formulas) have been long modified by now. I believe the reason they removed the numbers is because they became relatively meaningless, as damage and defense values began to scale with many other variables, such as depth/tier.

And yes, more life on your shield means it will last longer in general. A certain type of defense on your shield means that it loses less life when taking damage of a type it defends against.
