right now i use swords and bombs but i have been wanting to become an all rounder so i have been wanting a gun useful against everthing.
so which gun do you recommend and why.

Might consider Polaris for your all-around gun. It is poor for Beasts and Gremlins, but as an all rounder are you really going to be shooting them with a gun frequently? The only problem with Polaris is that it is the RPG of weapons, rather slow, low precision and blinding knockback. But the shock and range are big pluses.
Otherwise the Valiance is a nice weapon, it is just very vanilla. For the one-gun arsenal, it is a decent choice after the Polaris.
Neutralizer and supernova shots can be shot while turning and moving. Iron slug you have to stand completely still for and I do not know about valiance but I think you can move.
Catalyzer line guns look really fun to use but you sound like you want something you can just whip out and blast enemies with, This gun requires you to use charge shots to tag enemies and is more of a strategic weapon, it might also be bad against faster enemies as the bullets are incredibly slow.

My friend has a Polaris and it looks incredible so a supernova should be as well. There is a rather small range that the bullets fly and they are slow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuAj7o8ROXA Keep in mind this is the elemental one being use against elemental weak enemies.
The iron slug looks fun to use because of how simple it is. I Really want a Callahan or an Iron slug.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rgvKRHf6CA This is the sister gun, the callahan shooting piercing weak enemies.
I do not know anything about the valiance besides that you can get the recipes for it anytime for basil prices in the bazaar or at any safe house like moorcraft.
Considering that you want to be an all rounder, a pure normal gun is not usefull since all swords also do normal damage + another damage type (except flourish and BTB. Plus, the damage from a gun is considerably weaker than a sword. A levi blade would beat out all of these. I suggest an alchemer, as only gremlins and beasts are good to elemental, and they do status effects.
Otherwise, from your 4, all would be ok if used properly except the iron slug. (look up a thread on why)
valiance is pointless. There's so many other far more useful guns.
valiance is the only gun, with which i have successfully knocked away trojan horses when they cornered me
other than that its been doing a good job against everything, it also has perfect knockback, not too much and not too little
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
neutralizer has slow bullets and no knockback
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
iron slug lacks mobility and probably has a bad dmg output unless u spam it regardless of the distance between u and the monsters
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
supernova has too much knockback, u could end up knocking things towards urself. if that isnt the case, itll knock monsters away so theyre out of reach from the gun
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i would agree to #4 if valiance wasnt so reliable
the charge attacks are horrible on all 4 guns(risk of getting hit and charge time per damage is too high)
my vote goes to valiance
Considering that a gun does considerably less damage than a sword, it's likely the only situations you'll be using it are when it's dangerous to get any closer to enemies. You'll also be more likely to use a sword against enemies that dodge projectiles such as Devilites and Wolvers. Taking all this in mind, I'd say an Elemental gun would be a good choice. Either an Alchemer (probably Voltech or Cryotech) or Polaris. I'm not a fan of Polaris myself but it does walk all over Gun Puppies.
Even with clusters of other types of turrets that are dangerous to engage at melee range, an Elemental gun will do neutral (Polyps) or strong (Howlitzers) damage.
I did the dauntless delver achievement with mostly just my Valiance. The best all-rounder. If you carry only 1 gun, Valiance is the one.
You get in more hits before having to dodge enemies because of the knockback on every hit.
I carry 1 sword, 1 Gun, 2 bombs on most runs. The 1 gun? Valiance most probably
Lumber bothering you? Charge up and blast it face first into the opposite wall.
Gunpuppies.. I can dodge the bullets and keep shooting at the same time. Gunpuppy danger rooms, no problem with my Valiance.
Zombies.. eh, I laugh as they stand in one place as I pace my bullets, never getting to the reload. I do not even have to run around and shoot, Just stand there, Graveyards, any Tier, bring em on.
Very 'horny' Jellies after you? Dance around them and their spikes while firing from the hip, big bullets of the Valiance makes it hard to miss. Plus, don't forget the knockback.
Retrode beams a nuisance? Knock them back with the Valiance, 2 shots, side step, 2 shots.
Even all those zombies in the Firestorm Citadel rushing at you in confined spaces.. Valiance keeps them away.
Wolvers, if you really have to.. Valiance
Devilites is a bit tricky, thing is to keep moving and circle around their point of view while you are firing so they do not lock on to you.
Only place I use the Iron Slug is in Deconstruction Zones. Gremlins get knocked down and they hardly get a chance to dodge or even swing a hit. I used to hate Deconstruction Zones before I got my Iron Slug. Now it is a breeze. Lalalala BAM BAM .. elevator.
@Batabii - Have you ever used Valiance actually?
It's the most useful gun from those 4 mentioned by OP.
It's the only regular speed 3-hitter amongst guns and it's the only gun that bullets knock enemies back. That's why it is useful whether you're kiting, holding position are advancing. Other handguns has usually only one technique of proper usage, while Valiance is versatile.
"I have been wanting a gun useful against everything."
Then Valiance is your sidearm. It's does everything, good range, good clip size, knockback, no movement penalties, damages all monster types, decent rate of fire. The trade off is that it also excels at nothing but this is not the case if you can get sick UVs on it - say med-high damage to 2 monster types or a high CTR or a high ASI.
And IMO, Valiance. Okay it's not the best looking of the four (Neutralizer kinda wins there) And not the flashiest (Supernova go boom!) And doesn't make you laugh when you charge attack (Still laughing when I charge a pummel gun in LD) but It does the job, and bloody well too.
If you must have a UV, I'd recommend ASI, the fire rate is okay, but a little faster is nice. CTR isn't so vital, it charges fast enough at level 10 IMO.
As for damage? I'd have an elite trueshot personally, but it's all down to preference there.
TL;DR - Valiance is the bizz
2 month old thread?
Anyways, here's what I think:
Valiance- good for 2 weapon slots; knockback is great, and damage is decent.
Neutralizer- best mob gun by far. Charge shots do a surprisingly large amount of damage, and they can allow you to safely take out mobs or gun puppies, having one of the longest ranges. Absolutely horrible against gremlins and wolvers (catalyzing alpha wolvers is fun though). Charge does about 130 damage in tier 2 (tested at RJP depth 16 with neutralizer), and about 212 damage in tier 3 (tested in FSC depth 27). Normal shot does 41 DMG in tier 2, and 84 in tier 3 (same depths for testing).
Iron Slug- Burn it.
Supernova- Flashy and good knockback, pretty useful in lockdown, guarantees annoyance of teammates.
I Vote for Neutralizer, since it's charge is fast enough to get out of danger, and you can direct enemies with the shots instead of mindlessly spamming it. Valiance is a close second, only because it can hit wolvers.
Lastly, Neutralizer bullets don't have any knockback (normal ones), but the normal shots CAN knock back Trojans a tiny bit. (Tested in FSC)
Neutralizer is a gun I always have around - with nova (soon to be hail), umbra, and callahan usually unless I'm in FSC
Neutralizer is by far my favorite gun :) way better than bio the slime only gun
let me just say, without reading the other opinions:
Nobody I've seen uses Iron Slug. In fact, nobody really uses Normal damage guns at all. Of the pair, callahan is almost universally considered better.
And that leads me to valiance. I hate valiance. It's charge attack is pretty lame, it's standard attack is nothing special, it has no debuffs, and only normal damage, which imo defeats the point of even using a gun. You use a gun for stuff you can't safely get close to. Which will almost always be constructs like Lumbers and Gun Puppies, which are weak to elemental.
By comparison, Blitz Needle is the go-to gun for vanaduke; Polaris has huge knockback, AOE, and shock;biohazard is great for groups of slimes and slow, clustering enemies like retrodes; the Drivers not only spread status quickly but take down multiple foes even with umbra and nova; argent peacemaker is very good in FSC; and callahan is THE gun for wolvers, devilites, and even gremlins.
All that said, however, I'm not a huge fan of guns at the moment. They just seem underpowered and situational compared to swords and bombs, and even callahan seems to do mediocre damage compared to something like BTB
edit: whoops I forgot I already posted here. is this a necro?
^ You say guns are underpowered? Try facing Br-Girl or Blueflood in Lockdown, and then you'll see that guns are definitely not underpowered.
Also, Supernova is less annoying than Polaris
Neutralizer is more situational than biohazard
Valiance may be lame, but it is very effective in pushing back enemies. The charge also deals quite a bit of KB. (Got hit by one in LD)
I only agree with you on the fact that Callahan is far better then Iron slug.
I have to agree with Rawrcake as well- neutralizer is my fav gun too.
You're comparing PVP to PVE. Big difference.
Supernova is less USEFUL than polaris.
If you want to push back enemies, use a sword or Polaris.
And you're comparing Guns to Swords. They're completely different things with completely different play styles.
Of course, Swords have a bigger DPS. They have greater knockback. They simply kill things the fastest. However, you sacrifice getting close to an enemy whereas Guns have a lower DPS but can kill from afar. I don't understand why you can even compare Callahan to BTB when they are different. I would understand Blitz and Callahan, even Callahan to Iron Slug.
But Swords to a Gun? That's blasphemy.
You're missing the point. You're saying you want knockback. Valiance doesn't do nearly as much as polaris. And you're generally better off using a sword than valiance. Especially since the brandish buff. And the charge attack of avenger would do great as well, if you really need range.
Callahan and BTB are both piercing damage. And BTB has a bit of range with its charge.
Batabii your discharge of valiance only proves you've never used it
It is an Exceptional firearm
it is the only close range knock back firearm in the game so what if it does normal damage
it still hits pretty hard for a gun
Of the normal damage guns, Valiance and Supernova are the only two worth getting, and i would rather have valiance
Valiance isn't as ubiquitous as Polaris or Blitz Needle, but it's still an incredibly versatile gun. It's shadowed by the Polaris in terms of overall usefulness, but if we're going to compare the two, Valiance shoots faster bullets, deals consistent damage and knockback at any range, and is nowhere near as annoying to teammates.
I'm not sure why swords are being brought into the picture though. Comparing Callahan to BTB is akin to comparing the Levi's charge attack to Nitronome.
Neutralizer looks too cool not to choose.
If I had to chose between those four, either Valiance or supernova.
Neutralizer's bullets are too slow and a small magazine and charge requieres some strategy. Iron slug has only a 2-shots clip and low damage considering this isue.
Supernova isn't that powerfull neither but has knockback. Valiance is the more simpler gun.
