If possible, throw a vial or
If possible, throw a vial or shoot the boxes from around the side. This is usually possible in the Treasure Vault levels, and some of the Jigsaw Valley and Aurora Isles maps. If you have an alchemer of some description a charge shot can sometimes break the boxes on the Spiral Court level with the energy gate in the bottom left, just shoot below the gate and hope one of the ricochets hits the box.

If you have free mist that
If you have free mist that won't get used (especially common with elevator passes), go ahead and open both.
In general, red boxes tend to have better drops than green boxes, but not always.
