For some reason when I'm using the calibur series weapons the third hit of the combo will completely "miss" despite me seeing the sword swing through the enemy. Is there something I'm doing wrong here? I know I have a bad habit from my PSO days of holding the control stick in the direction I'm attacking, but I don't do that all the time and it still seems to happen.

Well it doesn't always miss

Well it doesn't always miss for me, but yes, I have noticed that the third hit sometimes misses. Makes me stay off the third hit sometimes.

Maybe you can try delaying the third hit sometimes. Or only trying to attempt it when the enemy is in the corner.

Misses almost always

Same thing with me, but it misses nearly all the time, same with Avengers 2nd hit. I find that I have to be face-hugging the enemy before starting the combo to have it reliably hit with the last hit, otherwise it'll miss and then ill probably take damage because of it.

Not sure if it's my 300 ping or if it's just poorly designed.

I don't have much trouble

I don't have much trouble with it missing on the third strike, but I'm a pretty aggressive player.

It's probably just a matter of wonky timing or lag for you guys?

never happens to me, are you

never happens to me, are you guys lagging? (check top right of the game, should be 4 blue bars, if yours is yellow or red then you're lagging)

Caliburing

Yeah, some enemies get pushed too far away on the second hit.
The trick to caliburing some enemies is to never hit the enemy from the front. This also allows for things like going around a gun puppy/lumber and never letting it hit you, while you kill it.
And also to end your combo at strike 2 against certain enemies (lichens for example).
Etc.
Try it out later.

I play at school. I tend to

I play at school. I tend to always stay at 4 bars when I play. I have seen sudden spikes of 1-2 on occasion, but those cause noticeable performance changes.

Oh and pupu, I already never hit lumbers from the front (unless its a calibur charge attack or I am baiting it into attacking me and other monsters). And gun puppies sometimes I do that but I'm using owlite so I can take a few shield hits. I however should stop trying to three hit lichens...but I just can't help it...I must...click...third...time...

However, I tend to not actually miss on the lichens with the third hit (probably cuz they hit me too >.>)
