I was reading Aecarus' shield costume thread when I had a flying inspiration. :)
If we can have shield costumes as swords (such as a parry blade) why can we not just just have a secondary weapon?

*This is not technically dual-wielding, as you cannot use both simultaneously.

Since the parry blade is in the shield slot, it could:
1) Have a shield/dmg rating
2) be used for counterattacks

I am fuzzy on the details, since I only just now thought this up, but the way this could work might be:
1) A specific (but small) type of dmg bonus to your normal sword attacks (i.e. piercing, elemental...)
2) The abillity to bmg enemies while Sheild "Bumping" (which now acts as an attack)

Possible weaknessess of the Parry Blade (Shield)
1) Not very resistant to dmg (low health rating)
2) ... more?

This idea might even be modified to include a gunner (maybe shotgun), or bomber (emp blast?)

Ideas and suggestions are appreciated.

Interesting concept, although

Interesting concept, although I think balancing it may be an issue... Maybe it should have a % chance of damaging enemies on shield bump rather than every time? Or shield bumping damages the shield, or something... I just foresee derpish people running around shield bumping enemies to death :P

Alternate Parrying Blade Idea

Instead of a blade taking the place of the shield slot, perhaps your weapon could perform parrying. If the player's attack animation and an enemy's attack animation occur and meet within the same time span and place, they could block each other. This would grant a slight advantage to fast blades like the Flourish and Striker over slower blades like the Sealed Sword.

But if I were to take your idea and run with it instead, I would say that the parrying blade's weakness should be a defensive perimeter of one quarter that of a shield's. For instance, while the Trojans and Darkfang Gremlins have shields that cover their entire fronts and rears respectively, the parrying blade only covers half of that arc. It cannot block status effects, but otherwise has 100% resistance to damage.

What do you think?

So, to balance this Idea more

So, to balance this Idea more it is possible to
1) do away with "Shield" health
2) make a specific defensive area for "parrying" when the shield button is pressed (it will have its own attack speed)
3) and still be suseptable to bombs
(Can't you tell that I like lists?)

If this was done right, there could be a great pvp triangle (like rock, paper, scissors) with weapon types!
Swords > gun --- The parry can still block blaster fire
Guns > bomb --- Overall range + maybe a New Shield Item (different from parry, made for gunners)
Bombs > Sword --- Parry doesn't block Area of Effect dmg + New Shield Item (also different for bombers).

The idea here is to sacrifice assured defenses for a better offense. This should take more skill (or at least less lag).

I read the title and got the idea of some guy running around with a shield on both arms with no sword or gun :P
