So I want to start preparing for my first shadow layer run, and for that I need to know that gear is good. I have Skolver and a BTB for the Rabid Snarbys, but idk what to expect for (or if there are) depths before the actual Glooming Wildwoods.

any advice would be greatly appreciated :D

Before the actual Glooming

Before the actual Glooming Wildwoods is a regular strata 5 to reach Basil.

If your question was about the levels before the boss, expect undeads (kats, zombies, howlitzes), beasts (wolvers mainly) and some lumbers (not worth defending against them). All of that do poison.

In short, for defense, you need : normal, piercing, shadow, poison. Good armors are Skolver, Skelly, Silvermail. Good shields are piercing (BTS, Aegis, Ironmight) or Skelly (probably the best for the job).

As for the damage type you'll need : Piercing and Elemental. You don't need Shadow.

Does that answer your question ?

I assume you can change gear

I assume you can change gear at Basil, and possibly arsenal stations in the first strata?

Yeah

The elevators to the Shadow Lairs are behind the D23 Basil. You can change armors at Basil or at the beginning of the first depth of the Shadow Lairs. There is one initial arsenal station for the Shadow Lair, just like non-shadow bosses. After that you can't change your armor until you complete the Shadow Lair, just like non-shadow bosses.

Once in the Unknown Passage (following killing the shadow boss) you can change your armor and weapons as frequently as you would like.

Fradow's summary of proper arsenal is accurate. You'll also want some Shivermists to help with Crowd Control, and a few Polari will make some areas of UGWW much easier. Not everyone in your group needs to carry Shiver/Polaris though, just 1-2 people for each. Then just grab your favorite piercing and elemental swords and you'll be set.

oooooohhhhhhh... I thought

oooooohhhhhhh...
I thought that he meant there was another strata 5 like area that you had to get through before getting to UGWW.

Now that I understand that, would this set up be good for the run?

Skolver Cap (shock med, but i doubt that matters)
Radiant Silvermail/Skolver coat (not sure on this)

BTS

BTB
DA
Polaris
Voltaic Tempest/Shivermist Buster (depending on if my partners bring shivermists or not)

As for trinkets, would I be better off using my usual Elite Sword Focus and Elite Quick Strike, or swapping one for a shadow/poison defense?

sorry for all the questions, but i want to make sure I'm properly geared to not get completely pwned and waste the CE on a shadow key : /

Yeah, it's pretty much ok : -

Yeah, it's pretty much ok :
- your shock med doesn't matter at all, there is no shock there, but it's good anyway
- if you already have a skolver coat, don't make a radiant silvermail. But radiant silvermail would probably be better if you have it. Both are ok, really

- BTS is good, i did it with that, it just breaks fast (but i doubt anything save Skelly would do much better)

- your weapon load is good, that's what i used

- for trinkets, no, keep your trinkets, some more damage/ASI will probably help you more.

if I ever

If I ever make it that far in, I'd be glad for some of this help as well. ^_^
