Hello! I am a Free player who is trying to make his way into tier 3. I primarily use swords, and really like my Tempered Calibur. But, I'm just wondering, if it would be worth it going for Ascended Calibur, or going along with a different weapon line from scratch. As a f2p, my funds are limited to what I can grind (which isn't very much per day).

As well as sword-lines, I would like a good gun for any occasion. What would be a moderately cheap, decent set of equipment for one to get into tier 3? I know this has been asked before, but I can't help but wonder.

on the swords: keep with the

on the swords:

keep with the cali/levi (so you'll have an allround sword so you don't need 3 swords to counter everything haha)

seeing your F2P this could take a while but for me (didn't buy much CE but i trade TF2 items so that helped a lot) get 2 sealed swords and get both the gran faust and devine avenger (perfered ASI uv) and when your rich enough 2 ASI trinkets (these are a bit expensive just for some ASI you'll say but believe me it's worth it)

on the gun

get yourself some bark modules (romulus twins tokens), get the pulsar and upgrade it to polaris (kilo/gigawatt/polaris) -> also cheaper seeing you don't have to craft it to 3* (less chance for uv tough) this is i think the best allround sidearm you can get (don't know about the normal line if it's better or not) but for the monster i use it for it's awsome -> undead, gunpuppy's and lumbers (the ones you want to stay clear of in T3) the knockback is nice to keep monsters at a distance (watch out you don't send lumbers flying at your party members)

for shields i would say barb thorn shield, owlite (and maybe a skelly to counter fiends) best shield is the BTS for it's damage bonus (and against beasts/jelly's -> piercing defence)

also keep going with 1 piece and decide now what you want to make first (and what you plan to do once you get into T2, beeing it FSC or just random maps for materials) armor i can't realy give you much help with (i think it's personal preference)

There's not really cheap

There's not really cheap equipment out there though through the use of tokens you can bypass a few crowns since you aren't buying the weapon with crowns. If you're a sword person, you'll want to keep the Calibur as your Normal damage weapon, its a good sword. Later on you'll want to expand a bit and get a Piercing, Elemental, or Shadow damage sword but for now the Leviathan will do you very well. As for the gun, you'll probably want either Polaris or Antigua. Both of those are bought with tokens as well as the Snarble Barb (a strong piercing sword) and the Barbarous Thorn shield (raises sword attack power). You didn't ask for armor but the Wolver set would be great for a sword user.

i did this

Im a F2P too and this is how my equipment changed over time:

Proto set > wolver set + cutter + owlite >sold cutter> dusker set + calibur + horned owlite > dusker + pulsar + horned owlite + ascended cali + sealed sword > ashtail set + wise owlite + levi + GW pulsar + avenger >got lot of random stuff here> vog cub set + levi + DA + GW pulsar + Dark thorn blade + Crest Almire

I used wolver set (and its upgrades), calibur (and its upgrades), owlite shield (and its upgrades), and pulsar for a LONG time (2 months?) and stashed TONS of crowns. This way I save money for the equipment that I want in the future and it also gave me the time to think about what I really want to make in the future. It sucks to make something, upgrade it to 5*, then find out that its sh1t. Don't make something just because someone else has it.

Since you are a swordsman, wolver set + calibur + owlite shield

bristling buckler and its upgrades are better but I didnt make it. If you havnt started making a shield yet, or your current shield is 2 or 3*, then you might want to think about ditching it and making the buckler instead. Lets you farm Jelly King with ease. Also, you can get Plate shields (never get the plate armor) they are a good all purpose shield that can be upgraded into Volcanic Plate shield (good for Firestorm Citadel) or Ironmight Plate (good for Beast/jelly themed levels)

Only get calibur cause its a very good general weapon and it saves money since you only need 1 weapon for everything.

For a gun, get an elemental gun because the things that you want to hit with a gun (mostly turrets, or hit and run from a mecha knight mob) are mostly weak to elemental damage. top ones are: Pulsar (elemental damage upgrades), Alchemers (theres 3 that inflicts status affects for reduced damage, and 1 for pure damage)
For all purpose gun (normal damage), get a Supernova or Valiance.

Once in T3, you can buy new weapons with your saved cash and still keep the weapons you already have.

TL:DR
Save cash by buying only 1 weapon (calibur), 1 armor set (wolver) and 1 shield and take the time to get to know other types of weapons better and then buy them.

thank you

I currently have a skelly shield. I was just about to buy the ascended calibur recipe, and go look for some brandish-upgrade recipes. Probably either the fire or shadow one. I will try for the Wolver set as well. Thanks again. ^_^

another question

What would be a better choice? Bringing my Tempered Calibur up to an Ascended, or trying to find a recipe for a Cold Iron Carver? They seem to be the same speed and roughly the same normal damage, with CIC being slightly lower Normal and having a bonus vs Undead.

do NOT go for a CIV when you

do NOT go for a CIV when you are going for a brandish... it's the worst mistake i made (and to start from scratch again to build a levi) brandish does ellemental damage (undead are weak against it) so the brandish should do more damage vs undead AND vs construct. where the CIV only has a bonus vs undead and a penalty vs everything else. so keep the damage against everything else and use your brandish for the bonus...

here just look at the damage tables (T3 will give you the best difference) also every ellemental brandish has the same output damage.

http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Cold_Iron_Vanquisher

http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Glacius

first swing (vs undead) on the CIV = 213 (177 vs everything else)
first swing (vs undead) on the brandish = 270 (and also counts vs construct)

once again

Thank you. I'll just keep my Brandish (not sure if I'll try to go for Combustor or Acheron yet) in the back and go straight for Ascended. I heard having Levi wasn't worth it besides as a way to help you through early tier 3, and the materials and energy would be better spent on another sword, like Brandish or Winmillion or something. Is this true?

I am going to be honest with

I am going to be honest with you, if you plan on using swords, you should plan on having at least 2 swords, and if you have at least 2 swords, levi becomes pretty useless. You will want two swords with special damage, not not normal damage. I personaly am fond of the brandish line of swords, though lots of people realy like their DA/GF.

Voltedge?

If you play PVP, consider going for the shocking brandish line, since you'll exchange your krogmo coins for recipes instead of your hard earned cr.
If you're mostly on the winning team, you'll probably have the recipes way before you've heated the sword for the upgrades.

._.

As you go into tier 3 and become better at the game, you'll find that your levi will be much less effective than having multiple weapons. As Frosty said, you want 2 specialized swords: (Pick two) Elemental, Piercing, and/or Shadow. That ways, no matter what two you pick, you will always be doing critical damage to all monsters, except for the two monster types that your weapons don't cover (in that case, you will do neutral/ normal damage, just like your levi).
Even though you are F2P, once you can do jelly runs easily, getting crowns is not really an issue (P2P only have the advantage if they decide to use their CE on clockworks...which is somewhat a waste), since you can do up to 2 jelly runs w/ mist energy (as long as you join the party at the terminal). Also, 1 weapon slot upgrade is only 250 CE, which isn't too expensive, so getting 3 weapons is not a huge issue.
Your (recommended) weapon choices are:
Elemental: Brandish lines, take your pick, and Divine Avenger
Piercing: Barb. Thorn Blade and Final Flourish
Shadow: Acheron and Gran Faust

TL;DR
2 specialized swords are better than a normal sword in the long run. A LOT better.
Also, i suggest getting an Acheron before the Combuster. As awesome as the latter is, Acheron is better for jelly runs.
