why are they all have normal type? whats the point?
why are there no swords that does pure typed damage
oh man laser swords would be awesome!
How about... swords made out of ice?
They would break on 3rd hit, so you might need quite a few of them.
Err.. Fang of vog, What about that?
I'm sure the spiral knights could figure out a way to charge the metal with electricity..
yet, some how bullets aren't metal anymore? elemental and shadow dmg? What kind of argument is that for swords "it's metal" this is also fantasy :P
Fang of Vog isn't pure fire, it's still part metal.
An ice sword would also be partially normal because you're bludgeoning something with ice!
Physics at their finest.
(Also there's already a shocking edge.)
Are bullets metal? I thought they were condensed energy.
Bullets are -definitely- metal. Shots from alchemers, however, may not actually be bullets as such. Probably aren't. 'Projectile' is a more accurate term, perhaps.

Wiki says they are condensed energy. I realize this could be incorrect, but it seems like the bullets are not metal. I think the flavor text of some guns do imply that specific gun fires metal (antigua), but not all guns.
The antigua implies it uses powder to propel rounds (bullets in other words, with black powder cartridges). It also does piercing damage, not normal. I could see an argument for a piercing type sword if it was a rapier. But slashing weapons are all the rage. Who wants to poke things with a narrow attack pattern when you could swing your sword and hit enemies beside you or your target?
My thinking goes something like this: Even if its pure mass of energy, it likely has force behind it. The impact of said force can always be damaging, even if your spitting balls of fire or water, they'd have to be very slow moving to not have force behind them that could be called "Normal" damage.
I would argue that flame throwers and tesla coils don't impart physical forces upon targets. I can't speak to charged particle projectiles, those are theoretical weapons at the moment, but the idea as I understand it is a charge is passed as a bullet through the air at a target. It'd be like using a smoke ring bazooka to shoot air at someone, only the air discharges energy of some sort into the target instead of having smoke impact and scatter.
@ Sigmund: If the bullets are PURE energy, then they will impart no force upon the target as energy is not a physical thing. It doesn't matter how fast the energy is moving. So I would argue that handguns should definitely not have 'normal damage' unless they are firing metal bullets
Suddenly, Samus shows up and starts showing off the concussive properties of her power beam for no raisin.
Oh Magnus, you've done it again - video games and reality are not the same!
And before you point out to me that Spiral Knights isn't reality, I'd just like to say that this discussion has become more about the physics of reality than the physical mechanics of the game.
Because a sword is a piece of metal.
Hitting someone with a stick of metal will never NOT be normal damage.
Wait for laser swords!
