Ok so I have i7, gtx 560 and 6gb of ram.
What program/methods should I use to boost new area loading time?
I want to make it load instantly if thats possible.
How to boost loading time then you already have good pc?
Run spiral knights through a ram disk.
Same basic things you do for any game. Make sure you defrag after installation or a large update. Make sure SK isn't jousting for hard disk time; starting Steam and SK from the same disk results in some aggravating load times. If you've got a computer with multiple hard disks try installing SK on one that isn't your Windows installation. SSDs are amazing and RAMdisks are stupid-fast.
I use only 1 hard drive and never heard of RAMdisks.
Never making disk defragmentation either.
Should I buy that RAMdisk? Is it expensive?
hi use archlinux and u will have quick loading times, even on old computer (always better, that windows;)
Use a SSD for game files, ram disk would be faster but a pain to work with as you need to populate it with the game files every time your computer restarts, linux you can get it to precache the files in memory
w3680 (6 Core/3.08Ghz)
12 GB (3 channel)
ATI HD6970
Put this in an extra.txt file in the spiral directory
-Xnoclassgc
It won't help the first load of any location but will speed up subsequent loads. More info on this can be found here:
Don't worry about the ramdisk and ssd talk for your computer, for you they appear to be an overkill scenario that are likely to be more trouble than they are worth. That's more us having our jollies.
If you've only got one disk for everything aim for the disk defrag first. If your on Windows that's a simple as opening the Start menu, typing "disk defragmenter" and clicking the resulting program. Then click the Defragment Now button. The computer will be less responsive while the program runs (which could be a while if you've never run it before), but afterwards general loading times on your computer should see an improvement.
"Never making disk defragmentation either."
Then that means instead of allowing your hard drive to organize files all in their correct locations (Not visibly, but in the code), instead of allowing it to organize that, all that will be as if I took a bookshelf full of the hard drive data and knocked it into a fireplace.
Defrag the disk, do a disk cleanup, and do what dogrock said.
Not much you can do about loading, since thats about mainly just downloading/uploading the failes for the map and such. Really that is stored in RAM after the first few loads.
TL;DR
Do what Dogrock said and restart your computer for it to refresh the settings.
I didn't see but "Scheduled defragmentation is turned on". So that means I get auto disk defragmentation every week as configured?
im running sk successfully via ram disk with a junction in steam folder
the loading screen is still slow, it is not as fast as i read it in various forums
the only improvement i notice is that sk seems to run much more fluently, especially when i change gear(the menu that appears when i click on gear, is there instantly)
i havent yet played longer than 3-5 minutes with my ram disk for experimenting and seeing for myself, but before i continue i would like to have some tips, how to get that so called faster loading screen via ram disk
btw i did try out what #8 suggested, but if there are any differences from that extra.txt, theyre so little, that i cannot notice them
note that i havent tryed the extra.txt without ram disk yet
note2 i dont have as much free ram available, because of all those ram disk tutorial tabs in my firefox eating up ram, but so far it doesnt seem to be necessary either
my loading times are pretty okay, but considering that it only takes me 2 mins to copy the files to the disk, id like to make good use of it if possible
ty in advance for any tips and instructions
E:i used process monitor to see what data is being read/written and how long it takes. there were very few events, where java process accessed my actual hard drive, but those events lasted alot longer than the read/write events, that occurred on my ram disk. the few events, that lasted rather long, were accessing areas on my hard drive, which id prefer to leave alone. so i cant see any better way to improve loading screen performance with the use of a ram disk
unless some tech freak helps me out, im concluding this:
spiral knights loading screens cant be sped up by much with the use of ram disks, unless im using some stone age hard drive
however, id like to mention, that the ram disk boosts the overall performance, which felt especially devious in lockdown
to be more specific: combat situations are in real time, the game wont hang up for too many miliseconds, in which the opponents sword could seem faster or seemingly hit me from far away
I am having the same problem... My loading takes an incredibly long time, and I know it should take a few seconds with the current build I have for my comp....
I am currently running;
OCZ 30g Solid State (just for windows)
2x Hitachi 7200rmp 1tb HDD
Nvidia 550ti 2g
Asus Cosshair Formula V mobo
AMD FX series 8 core 3.1ghz
Corsair 8gb RAM
Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
I am fairly well educated with a computer, so if there is something that I am missing, or something that I am just overlooking when it comes to the game, please let me know. I do know that the game does run on Java, and I have done a few things to try and increase the Java Run time output, but that didn't help. So please, let me know if there is something that I might have missed.... Thanks.
1) Press Ctrl+alt+del and bring up Task Manager
2) Close the programs you aren't using
3) Click the Processes tab in Task Manager
4) Find Java
5) Right click it, go to Set Priority and set the priority to High
6) ????
7) PROFIT!
This stuff doesn't really help me do you guys know how to boost the load time for a windows 7 and it has 26 gb hard drive and 3 gb ram?
it takes about 4 minutes for it to load and sometimes my friends are done with the map already :( plz reply
Loading time is affected mostly by hard drive, i have noticed notable preformance by just changing drive from 5400 to 7200rpm
Also, do drive defragmentation from time to time.
And why this is still in general discussion instead of Technical Issues?
Then install Spiral Knights on it. Then you're done. Enjoy your less-than-3 seconds loading times.
"And why this is still in general discussion instead of Technical Issues?"
Because the creator of this topic is either not playing SK anymore, or has forgotten entirely about this topic to give a devilite's buttz about moving it. Geez, for someone who likes to play moderator so much, I'm disappoint you didn't even pick up on the time difference between Traevelliath's and Infernonova's post.
When i tried Traevelliath's way to reduce the loading time for Spiral Knights it said access denied when I tried to set the priority to high.
What did I do wrong?
I do love my 3 second load times for SK. SSD drives are smexy. <3 Always the first to load in Lockdown. New PCs rock. I used to be the last to load. xD
I load in about 3 seconds and I'm on regular HDDs.
You just gotta know how to set them up.
When in doubt, do what my dad did. Build your own PC. He bought the parts, and it's the fastest computer I know. And I've seen a lot of computers.
The best thing about fast loading times is when someone joins you just for lulz you run away to second area (baazar/arcade) then that person fallows you there and when he is loading you go somewhere else again. Or haven jumping when someone chases you. its so fun lol
Run a disk defrag.
Clear 'Downloads', all extra unneeded files.
Run CCleaner.
Delete internet history.
Stop unnecessary apps (eg. Windows Update for Windows).
Possibly consider temporarily disabling your antivirus.
Expand your RAM/hard drive. To help, try plugging in a near-empty USB stick, which will marginally increase the performance.
Maybe even use Game Booster (probably doesn't help much).
Pre-requisites:
- you have at least 4 GB RAM and at least 1.25 GB of them is free;
- you run Windows XP, Vista or 7 (either 32 or 64 bits would work);
- a vanilla installation of SK (i.e. no customization);
- do this at your own risk.
- download and install Buffalo RamDisk (pick "Install Software Anyways" option);
- pick "Advanced option" and allocate 1248 MB for RAM Disk. Assign it a drive letter (I picked "R:");
- reboot. Find SK directory in Windows Explorer. e.g. on Steam, it's usually in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\spiral knights. Then copy your SK directory to RAM drive. e.g. R: drive;
- using Windows Explorer, rename your original spiral knights folder to a new name, like spiral knights.bak;
- hit Windows Key and 'r' together, then type in cmd. It will pop up a window. Inside that window, type:
- cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common
- mklink /j "spiral knights" "r:\spiral knights"
replace first step with the parent directory of your SK installation as needed;
- close window, start SK and enjoy the speed!
Just buy a bloody SSD, shove it inside your computer, install Spiral Knights on it (your windows too, mostly important), and then you can enjoy your outstanding loading times.
And before you start asking me, just google how to put one in your computer.
So I have played about 4-5 hours on RAM Disk today (including two Vana runs). Here are some thoughts:
- you only need to copy SK to RAM Disk once. Buffalo RAM Disk will automatically restore it when you reboot;
- SK runs a lot more fluid and no more micro stuttering;
- 1GB RAM Disk is enough to hold a vanilla copy of SK. But it's probably safer to leave another 200 MB as buffer (for patching purpose);
- it doesn't seem to improve load time by a lot. But I still beat the load time of the people in my party.
Worth a shot, give it a try.
update youre java make sure its the newst one.
on a sidenote asukulan having FUN O_O the world is going to end in 2012
Edit: just noticed this thread was necrod WE ALL GOT TROLLED
Mate, those are killing you, if you buy anything, get more RAM, 6 is not enough, Its because of the RAM, get more RAM, you have such a good computer, don't waste it with some shitty 6gb of RAM like I did with my 1500$ PC only having 20GB of SSD space.
How is 6GB of RAM not enough? What's he going to upgrade to? 8GB? You've got to remember that at some point your computer can't make use of more RAM without the proper parts.
Rest In Peace 2012.
How do people even find these threads, then don't notice the date??
I'm jealous of your computer. If anything I'd suggest making all processors run if possible.
1. Start menu
2. Search and click on System Configuration
3. Boot tab
4. Advanced options
5. Check the "number of processors" Checkbox
6. Set to the highest number
7. Click OK
8. Click Apply
9. Click OK
10. Restart computer
11. Play like a bawss
It helped me...
