EDIT: I do not mean be able to see times for all the auctions or ones that your bidding on. I mean be able to see the times for auctions that YOU HAVE POSTED.

Thank you to the people that took the time to read it and help clarify it.

P.s. - even if you could see the times of all the auctions, there would be no sniping because when a bid is placed the time is reset to 5 mins (very short). So there is no way to really sneak in a bid "at the last second"

I think it would be really good for us to be able to see the exact auction ending time, or time left, for auctions that we have posted.
Not saying we should be able to see time left on all auctions in the AH, but it would be nice to know when to expect that big juicy payout from our nice UV's weapons.

Its just a little bothersome to see long or medium, when I'm trying to plan out when I can spend that money on something for myself.

The current system exists to

The current system exists to stop people sniping auctions, i.e. waiting for the last possible moment to have an all-out bidwar in the hope of getting something for less simply by being faster, and I think the AH is better for it.

Yes, Reading is Hard

First: Try re-reading the original post. He's only suggesting that the person who created the auction should see the exact time, not the rest of the world. The person who started the auction already knows the exact end time if they paid attention when they started it, so it doesn't leak any new information, it's just a convenience feature.

Second: The vague end times are obviously intended to discourage sniping, but I think they do almost the opposite: it's extremely difficult for anyone else to be online when the auction ends, so if you're willing to sit there and watch the item, you can often get it uncontested at the last minute. I've seen many items whose current bid went up by a factor of 5 or 10 in the last half-hour before the auction ended, and I've lost a huge number of auctions I would gladly have bid higher on because someone bid one increment over me at the last minute and I wasn't online to counter. The current system doesn't prevent sniping, it massively rewards it while disenfranchising all but the most hardcore (or lucky) players.

The current auction system is COMPLETELY BROKEN, which is why most people ignore it entirely and only look at buyout prices. If they displayed exact end times, at least people could arrange to be online when the auction ends so that they can make counter-offers; I think that would probably be substantially more fair than the current system. And when sniping becomes less profitable, there will be fewer people deliberately waiting to bid until the last minute, which will also make it less necessary. (And no, people aren't going to snipe you anyway by waiting until the literal last second, there's already a system for time extension when someone bids with <5 minutes remaining so that anyone who is present and watching gets a fair chance to respond--if you didn't know that, that's a further problem caused by the obsessive secrecy.)

But if they actually wanted to FIX the sniping problem, they'd implement freaking PROXY BIDDING. This is the 21st century. As far as I'm concerned, to have an auction that is run by a computer but that does not support proxy bidding is completely inexcusable.

Currently, the only viable strategies for winning an auction are to make sure that you're online and watching exactly when it ends (which would be fairly onerous even if they displayed the time remaining, and is freaking insane under the current system) or to place a huge preemptive bid and hope that no one goes over you (which will usually result in massively overpaying for the item). Anyone who thinks that's a good system is insane.

This is not hard.

We need proxy bidding.

Proxy bidding.

I think you first guys misread the the comment :/. It says viewing OUR OWN. This would not have to do with ANY sniping. We view our own auctions, the ones we put up. I think this is fair...

NO.

THATS what we thought this thread was about, and thats what our initial points argue against.

NO ACTUAL TIMES FOR BUYERS.

NO

a few points.

Firstly, yes, you are going to snipe your own auctions, how intelligent of you.

As for sniping. How do real auctions occur? There are 2 types, those on ebay and the like, and those in person. For those in person, you go there, and bid, while the item is being auctioned and everyone is there.
There isn't any sniping, as everyone who wants it is there. If the exact end time was posted, people could be there for the end.

The ebay option, has a maximum bid that you will place, and it automatically bids for you. You can then leave it. This is where sniping comes in, people come on just at the end, and snipe off those who aren't there. They can then put in a ridiculous amount and get the item for just over the previous maximum bid.

If you have posted your bid (the final bid you post) and then leave, it isn't really sniping you, it is just outbidding you. Unless you want people to stay online right until the auction ends?

As far as I am concerned, there are 2 ways to fix the AH:
1 - Have it so an announcement is posted about the auction, with a time for it (with a potential for people to place bids early), and then have the auction at that time, with the winning bid being the first one to go uncontested for 3 seconds. (put a countdown to the start to make sure everyone is ready). This would also provide more of an incentive to put a buy price, as currently, you can bid, then when it gets close to the buy price, you just buy it. With this way, as soon as the auction starts, no more option to buy it.
2 - Have a system similar to ebay, where you post a max bid, and it will autobid for you. Leave the vague end times to prevent sniping.
Or better still, don't actually put up the bids until the end. I.E. you tell it your max bid, then at the end, the person with the highest max bid will win it for a few crowns more than the next highest. No potential to snipe as you have no idea what the current bids are. So you wouldn't need to have the end time as vague.

HOW CAN YOU SNIPE YOUR OWN AUCTION YOU PUT UP? What benefit is that to you?!

@Jacktehripper

My last post was countering Spyash's (The guy just above me) suggestion to be able to see actual auction times of the stuff you want to BUY. Not the thing the OP suggested.

My FIRST post was incorrect, due to my incorrect reading of the OP. My mistake.

My second post however, is saying the same thing to someone who wants to see the actual times for the thing he is buying.

Were you referring to me, or the people further up?
