Topic. I'm already going for Combuster, and as such I need piercing damage. I'm not sure which one to buy, so I'm asking you guys.

Do you prefer swordfighting

Do you prefer swordfighting or bombing?

Because that's really the only thing that should affect your choice here. They're both excellent weapons but they depend on different playstyles.

Get both. The sword is better

Get both. The sword is better against greavers, trolljans and chromas, the bomb is better against devilites and wolvers.

Both, like Nicoya said

Snarbolax is an easy enough boss with a Flourish, and you should be able to get both weapons in little time (7 Snarby runs is all you need).

Get all: Shield -> Sword -> Bomb

Shield -> Sword -> Bomb

Unless you happen to be a bomber. One more vote for get both. In fact get all three. The sword will change your life (well your life inside the clockworks anyway).

personal opinion
I bet the bomb is great at 4* & 5*, but it is a bit underwhelming at 2* & 3* (still need to get around to heating mine up for 4* craft). The sword and shield felt useful from the get-go at all *s.

I agree with Bluescreen. And

I agree with Bluescreen.

And yeah, the bomb is great at 5* for sure. At 2* (and probably 3*, perhaps 4*) the radius is too short and the fuse time to short (meaning you can't drive mobs in the radius), so it's bad.

After using it on this T3 fiend strata, i feel the bomb is not that great against devilites, contrary to what Nicoya said : they will often move outside, and if you happen to drop/take up a bomb at the same time a devilite is throwing a furniture, you are going to be hit. You also have to be extra careful on your movements, to not move on the axis of a potential furniture thrown, so it's a bit of a pain.

My preference stays on the sword for devilites.

But i completely agree for wolvers/chromalisks : the snarby bomb will make any wolver den a joke : 3 or 4 "woof" from DBB will kill any amount of wolvers (although having a sword to finish off alpha wolvers is handy). I also love DBB against zombies packs.

Well, I should say there

Well, I should say there aren't really any bombs that are terribly useful at 2*. At 3* the snarby bomb starts becoming useful against wolvers, and a 4* absolutely minces them, and starts becoming useful against devilites.

I should say though that its functionality against devilites is somewhat situational. There's plenty of tiles in Devilish Drudgery that are too open for bombing to be really effective, but in tighter spaces like clockworks tunnels or especially dark city you can really rip through them. Fully heated the charge time should be quick enough to keep devilites interrupt-locked in T2, and with a bit more CTR you should be able to do the same in T3.
