So how do you feel about the prices for thing like prismatic wings that recently sold in the auction house for 7,800,000?
On the one hand, I'm happy for Spiral Knights that they are finding ways to get people to spend real-world money on the game.
On the other hand, it kinda upsets me that some of the best accessories will most likely remain forever unavailable to me and just about everybody else.

Auctions
One thing that I dislike about the auctions is how they keep adding things to it each day(or two). The auctions have in my opinion hav decreased the bids for actual usable items. Many people see an accessory for 1.5 million cr. and instead of buyinga usable item they try to save up for one item that is only cosmectic.
Before the auctions it was all about trying to maximize a players chances of doing well in a certain level. In that sense they would look to the forums/AH to find the top tier equipment. However, due to these featured auctions it seems many more people are favoring the "look" opposed to usefulness.
Lastly, I myself and others have started selling items that at one time where considered rare simply because tomorrow they may appear on the AH through the featured auction ( at far below their orignal value).

As a side note the Featured Auctions make it harder for everyone who is trying to sell usable gear, since Featured Auctions normally showcase really rare accessories.

Jealousy is a powerful force
Jealousy is a powerful force in MMOs. If it's the aesthetics of these rare accessories that is appealing and not their rarity, then it is a bit of a shame that only a few people will get to look good. But on the other hand, if the rare accessories aren't things that people are going to want for their intrinsic value (i.e. things that look good), then they're not going to be worth as much, so it's sort of necessary. Besides, prismatic wings are more of a "HEY CHECK OUT MY COOL AND RARE ACCESSORY!!" than a mundane, functional wardrobe piece, so I don't think it's that big of an issue. And who's to say more prismatic wings won't go up for auction one day?
Too bad so sad?
I mean its just an accessory, its like having a go at valve for making unusual hats so hard to obtain. I have absolutely no problem with optional non game altering items being at differing levels of rarity.
