The idea of people capturing monsters, or training pets simply DOES NOT fit into the realm of Spiral Knights!
In trying to keep with the theme or sci-fi/steampunk, we should be looking for creative alternates, such as:

1) Build a drone/robot-ish thing that follows you. (you make/buy/find upgrades)
2) Bribe friendly creatures in levels by feeding them Mist/CE.
3) Customizing your own Mecha-Kight, and ACTUALLY MAKING THEM USEFUL! (Maybe adding gun/bomb upgrades?)

In short, my suggestion is to stop obsessing about pets.
Instead, become like Jim-Dale and recruit a cultist following.

Let me see, luring a creature with food to capture it or fool a creature with food to make it follow you. OH GAWD HOW MUCH DIFFERENCE

Training something so it's better vs customizing something so it's better.

You're thinking of the same thing with a different name. For the sci-fi/steampunk part, paint everything gray/white and call it cyborg pet.
