Almost fully into Tier 2, have a few questions.

Hello. I've been playing for a few days, soloing mostly, and I'm able to reach the barrier for Tier 1 players. Over the next day or so I should be able to craft everything I need to get to Tier 2 and start playing with everyone, but I have a few questions.

1) What are the ideal damage types people seem to look for beyond normal (ie Piercing, Elemental, Shadow)? I've got my hands on a Shadow Alchemizer recipe, and sounds like a cool weapon (and it can upgrade through the rest of the tiers, which I assume is something to look for in weapons), but it only does Shadow damage; is that fine? I notice the two bosses are part of families that are weak to Shadow Damage.

2) My Tier 2 weapon right now is a Spur; it's fun to use, but I've heard that it and its upgrades aren't worth using in Tier 3 and up. Should I just go get a Calibur? I was a little discouraged because I hadn't found any swordstone but now I see I can get it for Tokens besides those you get from the bosses, so I should be able to make one right away.

3) I haven't bought any Crystal energy at the moment; obviously I'll need to get some when I start crafting the higher level equipment, but when I start partying with other people, will I need to start buying energy just to keep up in the dungeon?

Thanks in advance.

1) Using guns on the Jelly

1) Using guns on the Jelly King will probably make that fight far, far harder than it needs to be. You will be able to do every tier and every floor just fine with normal damage. Damage advantages can't make up for knowing enemies or fights, or just sheer playstyle knowledge.

Personally (again, this is just me), guns are usually used in certain situations. You can use them on enemies that naturally dodge (wolvers, for example), to easily shove them away, or into a corner. I also tend to use mine in certain levels where Cannon-family Pups are accessible... once I traverse a sea of spikes. By going over all those spikes you usually spawn about 8-10 of those pups, overwhelming your screen with attacks (especially in tier 2 and 3). So a gun helps me take them out one by one, at a distance that gives me enough time to react. In other situations I'd rather use a sword or a bomb.

2) People tend to vote against Spur-family swords in Tier 3, yes. Calibur is nice because it can go into Leviathan Blade (which is basically a super power Calibur, nothing bad with it), or Cold Iron Vanquisher-- which is a Calibur with extra boost to Undead (which are some of the trickier enemies, let's say-- especially in hordes). Cutter-family and Khorovod are also popular (Keep in mind that Cutter charge attack is kind of unforgiving, and Khorovod is only 4*), and so are the Sealed Sword series. I'd rather any of those over a Spur.

3) If you party with other people, your energy costs should actually be LESS, because you should NEVER, EVER pay energy for a revive if someone is still alive, and has at least 1 bar of health left. If you go for extended, full dungeon runs you may need to buy CE (for example, starting at floor 8, aiming for floor 28) just to pay elevator costs, but technically you can do a full run of any tier on mist energy alone (provided you start at a full mist bar, don't pay for energy doors / rezzes).

Thanks for the answers. I was

Thanks for the answers.

I was wondering about if I should trade my gun for bomb, but like you said, the screens full of Gun Puppies have kept me from doing that, as well as the switch puzzles that are faster using a gun than the vases the levels provide for you. Of course, this is me soloing, so this wouldn't be an issue if I was partied with another person. I've also felt the need for a bomb in Arenas or other situations where it's impossible to kite enemies away and take care of them at your own leisure; ultimately I guess it will come down to which of those situations I encounter more/can't handle as easily if I don't have the ideal weapon for it.

Are there people who just go with a Gun/Bomb setup? I can't imagine that working out well.

Once my energy fills up I'll go and make that Calibur. If I really miss how fast the Spur was I can try to get a Cutter, from the looks of things.

Bombs are... slow. You have

Bombs are... slow. You have to charge them to get anything; which makes them very very hard to use in the arena (which is also the best place to use them.)

Running round the edge of the arena with a gun works, but is also very very slow.

I basically gave up on my bomb, in favour of gun and sword. I just don't see a way to avoid the sword.

And the cutter line, (especially with a swiftstrike buckler?) SwishswsishswishswishswishswishswishSWISH.(swishswish) Works great.

Damage types: I really like my elemental gun. The only thing I dislike it on are wolvers, and since I can't usually hit them with it anyway, it's not a huge problem.
I *probably* should have gone with the freeze gun instead of the fire gun; if only because of oilers. I kinda miss my stun too.
But there is only one thing more fun than setting things on fire, and that is setting ALL of the things on fire.

Anyway - shadow damage should be fine, fiends don't seem to crop up very often and undead are almost completely avoidable if you choose your elevators carefully.
It's probably sensible to have a mix of damage types though.

Energy? I spend every single spare coin on it, because I can always turn it back into coin by, you know, playing the game. I find I use 40-80 on an average run (since you usually meet a party halfway down) - but having a few more than 100 available for the long runs, or to open a treasure door or two, is good.

You can buy extra weapon

You can buy extra weapon slots once you're a little richer. They only last 30 days (although 30 full days is rather long), and it allows you to mix up more types of weapons available to you. I run sword/gun/bomb/weapon to level personally, and can't go back.

Bomber Here

I personally think Bombs are great if you have some friends to run with that get how they work. Basically, a Bomber is the CC for the group.

I, for example, run Cold Iron Carver/Graviton Bomb/[Status] Bomb. Graviton is powerful CC that holds enemies down very well. Works very well for kiting and setting up enemies for a powerful charge attack.

Bombs are wonderful

I love bombs. I started with the blast bomb and have been carrying that one forward as my primary bomb. I like the way it disperses enemies and it does good damage. I've been able to use it as my primary weapon to solo arenas without any trouble. I pull out my sword to finish off the last couple of enemies in each wave, but the bomb is wonderful for doing lots of damage to lots of enemies, so it thins the herds quite efficiently. When charging, keep moving so you don't get surrounded by the enemies. Also, pack a decent shield and a sword with a reasonable knockback (not the cutter line) so if you do get surrounded you can push some enemies away and start moving again.

If you want to use bombs, I recommend the demo suit or helmet line (or both, but I like to mix and match my armor so I get piercing and elemental defense); those will drop your charge time. I also recommend either the freezing varporizer line (to stop enemies in their tracks) or the blast bomb (to disperse them) if you're doing a lot of solo play. The firey vaporizer does great damage in non-fire levels, but it won't keep the enemies off your tail when you're running solo around an arena, so it's best for team use.
