Piercing Damage? Aegis vs. Volcanic Plate Shield?

Hi, I'm fairly new to Spiral Knights and the tutorials and the information at the Wiki is lacking to my taste.

What is piercing damage and which shield should I use? My playing style is to kill the monster before it has a chance to attack; I also rely heavily on guerrilla tactics.

New Recruits is down one.

Also, Piercing defense is useless. It's only from lichen and ground spikes.

Piercing damage is a type of special damage, along with Elemental and Shadow. Each monster class is SUPPOSED to have attacks that deal one type of special damage but, as Magnus said, Piercing is useless because there's only one monster that dishes it out at the moment.
