assume you are exierenced spiral knights player. Shield cancel. fair enough you can dodge enemy attacks and avoid damage with shield cancel, but all heavy swords have medium to huge knockback (the scaled going form DA/GF at bottom to Sudaruska/Triglav at top) on the second strike allready so is it worth missing that extra 150 damage?
is shield cancel on heavy swords worth missing the more powerful second strike?
You'll find that in T3 it's much riskier to use the second swing, as enemies move considerably faster, attack more often and spam more projectiles. If you're only up against melee enemies and you're confident you can keep them away with sword knockback then by all means use it. However if you miss you'll most definitely take damage as the recovery from the second swing is very long.
but i allways play in a full party so i dont know if the enemy has taken damage or not. so that second hit could finish the enemy off. and ween-bot, i have been doing almost exclusivly Tier 3 for months. i know what to expect.
There are threads about techniques for heavy swords. Similar techniques apply to lighter swords, but, as you have already figured out, the stakes are higher when the sword is slower.
One technique that applies to your question is: Make your first swing so that you *deliberately miss* the enemy, but close enough that the *second* swing smashes the enemy before the enemy can hit you.
i am a bit of a perfectionish in the sence that "missing" just feels wrong. i like to be deliberate and lose as little health as possible. i die extremly rarely in FSC because if this. at the same time when i have swordsmen setup i like to be on the front line gettin' some. finding a balance in this is what i am trying to figure out.
The only place I really use heavy swords much is RJP, and missing the second swing on a jelly cube is basically guaranteed to earn you a full tackle to the face before you can shield, even if the first hit knocks it away.
So yeah, it's worth shield cancelling.
Yes, it's worth shield-canceling the first swing. Especially if you want to take as little damage as possible. Especially if you're dealing with fiends, zombies, retrodes, jellies. And definitely when dealing with large mobs. Often times, you'll want to do swing-cancel-swing-cancel, repeatedly. Only commit to that second swing if you absolutely know you won't be countered.
question: is the more powerfull swing worth the risk of getting attacked because it's so slow?
Answer to both questions: it always depends on the situation.
Yeah it has knockback, but an enemy could sneak from behind, or there's a puppy shooting ahead. Hitting enemies wont save you from that
