Well, comparing the stats of the Volcanic Salamander Set with the Arcane, I realized that there is not much difference ...
IMO, Arcane Salamander Set is worse than Volcanic, due to their bad bonus =(
Is this failure of the OOO? It is useless to you through a Shadow Lair just to make an armor that is basically the same as other armor much more accessible.

Both have no real point because slimes and beasts do piercing damage anyway ... Unless you want to take the defense for the few lumbers and puppies in a slime/beast fire level. But in general, you still prefer to take piercing defense in a slime/beast level ...
I also think it's useless to have bonus against beasts and slimes, if you have no piercing protection...
In addition, Arcane has very little difference in elemental defense, compared with the Volcanic.
May serve as an costume? =D

Great for bombers using a blast style bomb if they have the ctr max already and wish not to use a mad bomber set its not bad at all.
Danger rooms? it's common to find a mix of jelly and beasts there, while the whole level is actually a construct clokwork tunnel.
Or vice-versa, a slime/beast tunnel that has a construct danger room.
Since there's no way to protect against everything on those cases, arcane at leasts protects from one, while letting you kill the other a bit faster.
Another case can be arenas. Spawns are always weird there. (dont tell me you never saw alphas and gun puppies together)
Those are the only situations I can think of.
Really, they are great ideas and suggestions.

Well, now I have to respond. :) I don't have any personal experience with either one, but it seems that Arcane has higher elemental protection (if the statistic bars can be trusted at all --- dubious). I agree that it's weird to trade a Medium bonus for two Lows. Probably somebody will chime in with some special situation where that helps. But so far I agree with you. Frankly, most of the Shadow Lair armor isn't exceptionally good. It's mostly for bragging rights, I think.
