What is a wishing well do?

Throughout my journey through the Clockworks I have discovered a few of what appear to be Wishing Wells or places of worship. When you activate the well you toss money or heat into it. Very small amounts. However after the 5th time, it no longer allows you to.

The odd part about this is that both times I found it, I received a 50cr coin at the end of the level. Coincidence or does it actually raise your chances for a better prize on the prize wheel?

Wishing Well Statues

I wouldn't know about tossing heat or coins into them, but I have found that hitting the statue with a gun results in a large number of coins coming out, or heat specks and coins being dropped one at a time. Never noticed any considerable luck bonus after finding one, though.

Edit: There are different types - I'm sorry for the confusion... only just found one of the 'other type'. xP

What Aureate said got me lost!
There are two types of "wishing wells".
The ones with the large pools of water are to have vials thrown into them, and a hefty sum of coins will appear surrounding you, however, sometimes monsters spawn instead.
The small one that you inspect five times simply gives you heat and/or coins. There's no catch or fee, but you don't get very large amounts of either.

FYI: For that large pool of water, you can also just shoot the statue (I used a Gigawatt Pulsar) to trigger the crowns/monsters.
