Including the gear that stops at 3* and 4* like the Winmillion and Brandish series weapons.
I know they'll never compare to your precious Gran Fausts and Divine Avengers, but let's stop treating them like dirt. They're perfectly viable weapons.

They're not perfectly viable weapons in the endgame.
Enjoy T1/T2 with your windmill. Beyond D18, Winmillion makes wolvers and devilites and anything else, really, go into a combo-dodging frenzy. The weapon looks nice, and if all you do is T2, it's not awful. Not good, but not awful.
That said, I currently wear Virulisk armor. I'm one of a very small handful of people on the server. I really like the way it looks, and just as importantly, I handle poison stages very badly, so it covers up for my inability. I also have like four other armor sets for various situations, though, and I am putting the ash tail line together for overall functionality.
In general, though, the Spur line of weapons is worse in every single way than the arguably cheaper and easier to get Calibur series. The Troika series is worse(for now) than the Sealed Sword family, which is by no means difficult to get. It's not an issue of loving the underdog - if you like something because it's unpopular, you're just as bad as people who love things for being popular. If you legitimately like the playstyle offered by these weapons and prefer them aesthetically enough to use them, good for you! You enjoy the game your way.
Oh, also, Iceburst Brandish used to be boss for certain things. Not sure if it's still good anymore, though.
Uh.. Royal Jelly is quite dapper looking?
Giving Winmillion to a friend is a good way to get more heat for yourself?
Nitronome is almost as good as a heavy sword with Auto Target turned off?
Ash of Agni helps get rid of people you hate when oilers are around!?
The 5 Star version of the Khorovod and Win series magically pops-up at a Basil near you?
Winmillion is awesome if you use it the right way! It is my favorite freakin weapon (I can't wait to see what happens if it was a 5-star weapon!)!!! No one knows how to control that beast, therefore most people sticks with the easy way "nooby" weapons, by using the nooby Gran Fausts and Divine Avengers <-(Those things suck!).
(I'm relating this to FPS games btw.) Everyone goes for the M4 Carbine in CoD4 because it is super powerful, but I stick with the G36! They are both powerful, you just have to use the G36 the right way so you can massively own noobs!
Tips on using the winmillion:
- You know how those dumb wolfys dodge your every attack? Just corner them, and kill them from there! That easy! How to corner them?: Herd the wolfys like sheep, so they can slip'n slide across one of the corners, then carve them like a pumpkin!
- When facing those undead skellys don't do a 3 hit combo (slash, slash, (spin around)slash (then skelly hits you)), you get hit because your vulnerable and you can't block your shield fast enough. Instead do a 2-hit combo, then block (Slash, slash, Block (Skelly slashes at you, but you blocked him!) then repeat the process again)!
- The advantage of using a winmillion is that you can hit enemies from a wider range!
Gosh! I love the winmillion sword so much! I think there needs to be a 5 star weapon of this! Like for the special attack, it should be a small red wave surrounding the player, pushing outwards, and a massive large red wave flying outwards in front of the player. It might be a little godly, but what the heck. It is a 5-Star Sword! I can imagine it now. The Sword being Red as a primary color, and gold as a secondary color!
I'll be the noob that asks the implied question here.
What's wrong with "full jelly armor", Winmillion, and the Troika series? Are the last two simply because they have no 5-star variants?
(Ohman I wish the Hatchet line continued...)
Jelly armor gives high defense against piercing, but there aren't that many monsters that use that damage type.
Because they decided to make certain weapons and armor inferior in every way for no reason.
I was pretty found of my 2* wrench wand for awhile. I'd really like to see some of the more unique weapons(slime slasher) get upgrade paths, or more variety in general for that matter.
So far the only "unique" swords that don't extend to the 5* range is the Wrench Wand and Spur series.
Spur series has a playstyle unlike any other sword, and Wrench Wand's charge is the only one of its kind.
Most other swords playstyles are similar, and no not taking into account any of the ailments, since guns are there to help.
If you miss your big beast basher or thwack hammers, move to the Troika Series. It works very similar to those weapons.
If you miss your Searing Edge, move to the Fireburst Brandish for the fire ailment or Nightblade for the elemental damage.
And as far as I know, the basic powerful one slash charge attack that comes with a proto sword and every other basic sword is not on any of the 4/5* swords available.
Endgame-viable or not, it's fun to use other weapons with a different playstyle. Some people prefer a sturdy and reliable choice most of the time, but even that kind of choice can vary from player to player.
Plus, I hear T3 is kind of unfun in places.
I'm happy to be a "enjoys the journey" type person, although it'll never get me through the Citadel (although you don't need the Citadel to reach the Core as long as there are other gates). I'm not the most goal-orientated gamer, and with Spiral Knights you don't need to be. I'm not even sure it helps—it's just another gaming choice, and the game is flexible enough for that.
Plus, the Wrench Wand growls!
Upgraded brandishes look cool.
Searing Edge got me to Tier 2...
The Troika series is so beast! They hit like a truck, keep all the enemies away, and can hit up to eight jellies in a single swing! So they stops at 4*, but until then they're great.
and @Espeonage it shoots a projectile (looks like a gun puppy's shot) on top of a pretty decent thwack. Projectile goes pretty far, and does a fair bit of damage for T1.
I actually see a decent number of jelly armors out there. I was thinking that the jelly line might be useful for running the jelly king over and over again, in order to farm him for tokens so that you can rack up sealed swords for UV crafting (...and Avenger/Faust sales). Am I incorrect on this?
...and, of course, many of the odder armor sets can be used as costumes for when you want to look different than everyone else.
The troika series is really really good if you like distributing heat and the content of crates to your team mates! It's fun to watch someone with a troika stand there in front of the hp capsule he just freed from a crate, unable to walk for a split second, and - tooo slow *g*. Or stand by, while they really slowly bash minerals. Wait, I'm the one with the troika... crap... but well: Also it's kind of fun to dance around with that thing if you don't get hit for once, have a lot of space and few MOBs. Sure, would be easier with about every other weapon, but seriously, it's fun. First strike into one direction, combo into the opposite to push back enemies into both directions. Or create a triangle of mobs to "dance" between. There's nothing wrong with the troika series as long as you stay about 1.5 tiers below what your can usually manage.
Then there's the ionized salt bombs. There's just no better way to getting used to other bomnbs than upgrading your beloved rock salt bomb to ionized salt. It's so ulseless, you'll be off your salt-spamming-habit in no time. The rythm you get with the longer charge time just doesn't do then job. Can't even use it well to clear mineral areas now. SOOOO glad I have got my Khorovod for that... -.-"
My Winmillion makes hitting ranged switches much more convenient.
Actually, if you're getting hit often while usig Troika, you're not doing something right.
As with any sword, shielding is necessary; even with Striker, it's unwise to simply leave yourself open and plow into enemies. I'm cautious and perhaps slow, but for every four to five strikes they need to kill an enemy, I only have to release the shield and strike twice. And then promptly reshield. And like any other sword, I wait for the monster to open itself to attack.
I've strangely found the Troika line useful for dealing with, of all things, fast-moving kats. I let them cluster around me with a shadow-strong shield on, let them bite, and then swing twice. This may need one more rinse-and-repeat, but it kills them quickly. Thank gods. That wide swing makes encountering multiple enemies easier, and could be called 180° of crowd control.
And this is coming from someone who plays a bomb crowd-control role. A dedicated swordsperson ought to figure this stuff out better than me.
I think the troika is a monstrous weapon. It's got great reach, great AoE, great damage, and a very useful knock back on every swing. Proper block canceling can let you swing at almost proto sword speeds. It's hard to fault it besides using that second swing sometimes when you maybe shouldn't have.
The Upgraded Brandish lines (minus Cautery Sword) look great. I love Katanas, and every game needs more functional ones for their end-games. It's a shame that in most games, they end up being decoration for your character (and unless the design is used more in the future, it seems katana-like weapons are doomed to a similar fate in this game).
I've managed to upgrade all the way up to Khorovod and I love it. However, back when I was getting close to Tier 3 (had half or so of the required equipment) I still used a Heavy Hatchet. A ONE-STAR WEAPON at the end of TIER 2. Horrible damage, of course, but the knockback was still there, so surprisingly enough it was quite useable as a damage-avoiding tool, not a damage-dealing weapon. I guess that's a good example of how useful the Troika series is.
Now that the drop rate of Critter Carapaces has been fixed, I'm sure the Chroma series will become more common.
I still have not upgraded it to the kamarin (haven't found the recipe yet :( ) but I absolutely love my troika! Probably the best 2* weapon I have used! It is definitely a sword that deserves more love, and DEFINITELY needs a 5* upgrade. I would have a nerd-gasm if one was released. :D
I have a level 10 khorovod w/ IAS : High UV, in T2 it only does 7 less damage than my level 10 Divine Avenger. I'm sure it's because 4* works better in T2, but think about the DPS on a 5* Khorovod (Rumors say it is called "Shatter", picture if you pause at 0:29 on the Spiral Knights Trailer Video)compared to the DPS of a Divine Avenger.
Edit : Wow, I just noticed everyone praising about the Troika line as well! It's an under rated sword right now but I'm sure that's only because of no 5* and DA's and GF's.
Dear Combuster,
I love you. I'm sorry I haven't equipped you, lately. You were my first 5* equip. Until I encountered oilers, you were my ace in the hole. Quick enough, and strong enough, on your own. But then add a 3-block chance at applying fire and I was sold.
I'm sorry my Divine Avenger and Acheron have replaced you. Really. Someday I'll switch back to you.
Also, say hello to Magma Driver for me. I miss him, too. He might be slow, but that flame application is, again, great. There will come a time when ice levels are more plentiful at higher tiers...and in that time, I will turn to you both.
Sincerely,
Elegies
I find the wrench wand a funny creature, completely impractical beyond early tier 2. but I like the idea, and I wish there were more of the line, instead of stopping at 2*.... I think the game could use a few more quirky fun weapons that don't neatly fit into sword, gun, or bomb categories.
Without it, i would not be where i am today..
does that count? XD
Oh Hot Edge, you are helping new players find their feet in such a terrible place and helping me scrap together enough money to get to 3-Star gear.
I salute thee, oh Hot Edge.
Back when I still played WoW, I had a shovel I used solely to kill human NPCs. God that was fun.
"Back when I still played WoW, I had a shovel I used solely to kill human NPCs. God that was fun."
There is now a quest in the Forsaken-controlled area specifically for hitting people with shovels. Or digging them free, if you want to, I guess. Or you can free them and THEN hit them with the shovel.
I haven't taken the plunge to upgrade to a Winmillion yet but I do favor the Arc-Razor. I have found that the Razor is a great speed weapon. To me the calibur is dull and plodding and while it's best feature is the charged attack. Great in mobs but can bit you if you get hit before releasing the charge or you are super mobbed. Also you have no room to charge if you are working in a confined area such as some of the danger/party areas of Blight Boulevard and other such small areas.
What I personally like about the Spur series is that you advance with each stroke. It takes some getting use to and I know many believe that is a problem when fighting around spikes and thorns and I admit you have to becareful when using it in those areas but the throw back on each swipe keeps pushing enemies away from you which has 2 advantages.
1) It helps keep you from getting hit when enemies strike pushing them out of range. The speed of the Spur series also helps here.
2) It advances you away from the mob behind you that is closing in. I have regularly been mobbed and the Spur/Razor gets me out of the mob way better than the calibur series. I still take some damage but when you tripple attack/shield right you can extracate yourself from a mob. Spur series is your only shot if the enemies have already broken through your shield since it keeps advancing each swipe. I especially notice the step up when I miss an enemy or two that are striking me because I step past their attack as I push the central enemies before me.
I also love the wide attack arc. I generally can push several enemies at once with that wide damage arc.
A very minor plus is that with the charged attack you can still use the 2 free weapon slots if your are in a level where a hand gun is useless for fighting and a bomb is a definant must. The projectile is good for triggering switches in a pinch.
I have to admit that I don't use the charged attack to fight enemies because the regular attack is much more versitle and infinantly faster.
I haven't really tried the Cutter series so I cannot compare and as I said I'm still using the Arc-Razor and have not upgraded to the Winmillion.
My Shocking Edge would always arouse so much admiration... sigh
Something nice about under-used/non-used weaponry... a lot of them will find a use once we have PvP.
~Gwen
The Vitasuit series doesn't require the previous iteration to build the next. ...Which means it's one of the few 4* armors that isn't bound to the crafter by default. Sellable, tradeable, mail-to-your-alt-able...
Edit: Oh wait, that's armor, and the title said "Weaponry." Umm...
Y'know, I rarely see people wielding the Flourish series. The Flourish wrecks fiends and beasts-- outside the Flourish, you need guns or a Crystal Bomb for Piercing damage. Devilites and Wolvers auto-dodge gunfire, and crystal bombs are tricky to use right-- the Flourish suffers none of these drawbacks. More folks ought to give it a chance.
Yeah Giga, once I disliked flourish appearance and style and planned to make a Wild Hunting Blade for dealing with wolves... but then I tried it and it really owns beasts and devils. Also good against undeads, and I was lucky to find a UV: Undead High at a fair price on AH.
The Flourish is a demolisher of fiends. I have been heaven with the fiend-themed pre-JK gate this last week. The charge attack is also quite good and much easier to get a multiple hits with than the Calibur charge (since it requires a wall), although its area of effect is more limited.
Thank you soo much for convincing me to finally make my spur family its pretty
awesome
I love my Flourish. It kicks the rumps of beasts and fiends, deals decent damage to almost everything else, but it can never make a dent in Jellies and constructs.
And then there was the time I faced off the Jelly King with it...
Ah, fun times.
The Flourish needs elemental versions too!
Nitronome is pretty much the equivalent of hitting everything in a room with the first swing of a levi in terms of damage and the third swing of levi in terms of knockback and has the charge time of a UV ctr high haze bomb. Plus it lets out a blinding flash that annoys everyone in the party... what's not to love?
Volt Driver 4*
at 3:23, i present you my pikachu:

strong against undead and construct, also interrupts gun puppies and laser robots as the shock ticks in.
also watch other parts of that run to see the OP 2sec planting nitronome.
and of course the classical trick, frozen mob + calibur charge attack = 3 hits, promised.
I personally like using the more underused weaponry and armor, such as Brute Jelly Armor (you don't see a whole lot of people with that, although I am guilty of owning a Wolver cap.
