Which one is the better shield if you don't use swords often?
Barbarous Thorn Shield vs. Royal Jelly Shield
I'm comparing piercing shields, and the scenario here is that the player doesn't use swords often.
It's worth throwing the Ironmight into the comparison. Same amount of pierce resist as the BTS but a lot more normal which is nice if you happen to be around, say, lumbers (RJP/ or beast/jelly Arenas) or gremlins (beast/jelly arenas). Bonus marks if you get an elemental UV on it.
yeah the jelly shield's sleep resist is currently pointless
"barbarous thorn shield is the best common shield for swordies and royal jelly just isnt that good. go with the volcanic plate shield for its fire and stun resistance and super high normal damage resistance."
Lol best wolver clone Vana-is-the-only-thing-that-exists answer.
Anyways, if you do not use swords, jelly shield is the best for things like wolvers and jellies and such.
Sure, it isn't the normal like ironmight, but it retains the stun resistance. It has more piercing which nobody mentioned yet. So many attacks from jellies and and then polyps and then spikes themselves are pure piercing.
Because it retains stun resistance and has better piercing swapped for normal, my opinion is Royal Jelly Shield is better but not as diverse. You can take an ironmight into, say, a gremlin level to be extremely effective as well as some pierce def, and if there is a lumber then ironmight will block that lumber smash a little bit better.
Keep in mind, for things like lumber smashed, Royal Jelly Shield does in fact retain stun.
But do not quote me on anything, I do not know a ton of details about shields. One thing I can say is Royal Jelly > Ironmight for piercing attacks.
Royal Jelly shield offers the most amount of piercing defense but a bit less normal compared to BTS
piercing shields arent good UNLESS you are a swordsman, in which case you go for BTS, cause bombers and gunners only have to worry about long-ranger attacks and the only 2 long range piercing attacks that I can think of, and consider dangerous, are polyp barbs and jelly thorns. Almost all other ranged attacks are either elemental or shadow, in which case you dont need a piercing shield.
so long story short, you dont need a piercing shield unless you go melee

Why do you need stun resistance if you're fighting wolvers and jellies? The only thing that might stun you is the occasional Lumber, and those are hardly a problem if you're not melee.
You're probably correct about the Jelly Shield being more piercing resistant than Ironmight, though.
It is more piercing than ironmight, people have seen it protect from polyp attacks / jelly spikes better than ironmight.
Being a gunner, I do not need to have huge normal defense because the piercing attacks that I would have to shield are things like polyp and jelly spike attacks - hopefully something more in the future (non-shadow lair)
"Why do you need stun resistance if you're fighting wolvers and jellies?"
Other things like lumbers are in Jelly / wolver (sometimes) levels, and just because Ironmight has stun to help protect from those is not a reason to take it, because royal jelly also has stun.
So basically you are right, they aren't a problem, but it is no reason to take ironmight > royal jelly.

It's nice to have a piercing shield for things like slime arenas / wolver levels just because there is no reason not to in wolver levels.
The main reason, when actual T3 content (non-shadow lair, those will never count) is piercing, we already have our shield made.
"Why do you need stun resistance if you're fighting wolvers and jellies?"
Because the lichen's spin attack deals Normal/Piercing/Stun. Also, keep in mind the lumbers that prowl the Jelly and Beast levels. Stun def on that shield is a great boon to players. (As for Sleep Resist, the devs may one day add back in the fabled "Shrine of Sleep" levels.)
In addition, the extra piercing defense is worth something- especially when enemies start doing pure damage, such as, say, wolvers in T3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they do pure piercing damage in T3?
All round, I'd say The Royal Jelly Shield is actually more usable in different situations involving piercing damage, as the shield currently has the most piercing defense of all 5* shields in the game.
Other things Piercing Shields are good for (for non-swordies):
-Jelly Ground Spikes
-Polyp Turret Problems
-Whoops, I thought I could beat that spike trap
-WHERE DID THAT WOLVER TELEPORT FROM
And others, probably.
