I want to make some Spiral Knights videos, but I'm too poor to afford a good HD camera and I'm only 15 so I can't get a job where I live. Therefore I'd like to ask whether you guys know any good programs to record videos with.

Mac OS X version 10.5.8

If you upgrade to 10.6 or 10.7 it's built-in with quicktime. I don't think it's available in 10.5.

If that's not an option, try ManyCam.

Does that thing have X11?

If so, best and easiest way should be ffmpeg. Anything else should take a lot more system resources and give you worse quality output.

like:
ffmpeg -f alsa -i pulse -f x11grab -r 25 -s 1920x1200 -i :0.0 -vcodec libx264 -preset ultrafast capture_$(date +%F_%T).avi
