Rolled Max Normal and Low Fire at the alchemy machine while ragecrafting plate shields this afternoon for a nice base for a VPS. I think I'd prefer a Max Shadow or Max Elemental, though.
Thoughts?

Well, the places I tend to have the most trouble with shield breaks are:
1: Mask phase bullet hell. Normal/Elemental with fire, if I recall. maybe pure elemental?
2: Post-farted trolljans seem to be able to one-shot my GOS and stun me sometimes, though I take no actual damage.
3: Occasional zombie swarm (normal/shadow with fire) on a fire grate (elemental with fire).
4: Occasionally getting cornered by vana and nailed by the fire belt. (Elemental and fire?)
I'm thinking that the VPS will have enough normal on its own for #2, and for #1, #3 and #4 I'd benefit from an elemental UV, or shadow for #3.
I don't usually have trouble with mace hits breaking my shield, since I rarely get maced in the first place. Only time it's really a bother is when the knockback plows me into shadow fire.
UVs on shields don't do a lot. If a shield breaks in 4 hits, it'll still break in 4 hits with a Max UV when you are in Strata 6. Compare that to Strata 1 where something will break the shield in 14 hits and a Max UV makes it 16.
I'd sell it or go ahead and use it. Since the UV is Normal/Fire it'll complement VPS's existing abilities.
Low fire? Not really helpful. Max normal? Veeery useful, vannaduke's club/ceiling attack are normal damage right? Either normal or shadow, the only common source of elemental damage in FSC is the fire, and you can't block that once your already on fire. Hence the volcanic sheild not having elemental defence on it by default.
