I was wondering if I should go full sword with cutter and flourish or full gun with auto gun and blasteror one of bot comment what you think I should do.
Full sword or full gun
Thanks I have been trying to gy a nightblade and I have a firotech alcemer
There are no "character classes" in Spiral Knights, such as healer, archer, warrior, etc. The closest thing we have is the kind of weapons you use. It is the most important choice you make, about what kind of knight you want to be, and there is no right answer. Fortunately, you can change it whenever you want.
Whether you're using swords, guns, or a mixture of swords and guns, you want two (or three) non-normal damage types, so that you can take advantage of the weaknesses of monsters; see the wiki page on Damage. For example, you could have a shadow sword and an elemental sword. Or you could have a piercing gun and an elemental gun. There is no particular reason to own a normal sword or a normal gun. Bombs do not quite follow these rules so well; they are a little more idiosyncratic.
If you use a mix of swords and guns, then your gun should probably be elemental, because swords can have difficulty against turrets, and elemental is the best damage type to use against turrets. Thus Nightblade and Firotech is a good combination (shadow sword and elemental gun). A piercing sword with an elemental gun would also be good. An elemental sword with an elemental gun would be bad against the elemental-resisting monsters (beasts and gremlins).
Full anything always tends to seem like a bad idea to me. When you're full sword,
are you going to carry a sword for all three damage types? That's not really the greatest
idea in my opinion. What happens if a monster is out of your sword's reach? A gun would
be helpful. If you're in the final wave of an arena with all the mecha knights, a mist bomb
like the Ash of Agni or Shivermist would be helpful as well. In the end, I'm not you, and I won't
see everything like you do, but I've played this game for a while, and ironically, I have more 5-star guns
and Bombs than swords, and the ones I have still manage to constantly remain on my loadouts.
@Blaze:
Pretty much. "full" builds do work, but in general I find that not carrying a utility sidearm tends to not be worth it, unless you're restricted to two weapon slots, in which case it's just picking the lesser of two evils.
With 3/4 slots, even with a full set of armour for, say bombs, and 3 bombs, bomb trinkies etc, it's generally a good idea to also carry a spare sword/gun around just as a sidearm; same applies with the other two classes.
Lots of people play as pure sworders, or as pure gunners, or as pure bombers. For example, I use three weapon slots, and usually play with three swords.
The main place, where pure swords is a hindrance, is a field of gun puppies protected by spikes. But this situation is rare, and sometimes predictable and avoidable, and always a fun challenge. Another delicate situation is that of two Tier-3 gremlin menders hidden in a crowd in an arena. If I don't have a haze bomb on me, I often charge up my Acheron and dive into the crowd to kill the menders. This is risky and fun. Another option is just to charge against the other monsters, trying to one-shot them. It depends on how big the party is.
However, in FSC I play with sword, gun, bomb. In RJP I play with sword, sword, bomb. So I'm not dogmatic about it.
Your mix of weapons is a highly personal choice. It has drawbacks and advantages, relative to other mixes. But I recommend that you make your choice, and then make it work, and then re-evaluate and try other choices.
I would only go "pure" if you know you are going to be in a party with people who have other weapons. I almost always carry two swords, and either a gun or bomb. If there are other bombers or gunners I almost never switch off my swords, but if all we have are swordsmen, then I use my gun/bomb when appropriate.
Often times there are threads complaining about things in the game, and the end result is that they have 4 of a single weapon type and can't do some basic task while solo. If they had 3 of the same type, and one of another almost all of their problems would go away. There is a reason there are 3 weapon types, so you might as well carry what is appropriate for your surroundings and/or needs.
So, if you want to focus on swords, I suggest having one alchemer as a side arm (or maybe a haze style bomb like the Ash of Agni or Voltaic Tempest). If you want to focus on guns, then I'd suggest having either a BTB or flourish since they deal with monsters that dodge a lot (and maybe a bomb). And honestly, there is no correct answer as it is whatever is fun for you to play. But just remember that if you find you have a hard time that there are probably other weapons that will make your problem a lot easier.
Thanks nord
lead you should add me as a friend in game may be we can adventur together
@Bopp "There is no particular reason to own a normal sword or a normal gun."
Correction: There is a particular reason and a particular reason only to own a normal weapon :) specifially guns... but.. you know calibur is taken for its charge attack and not its normal attacks so I guess that is considered particular.
Supernova - More stable knockback than Polaris because shock cancels knockback. Charge attack is much more reliable as well. Better for survivability - someone can also argue the use on gremlins.
Valiance - The knockback on its shots are interesting, and the bullets actually move at a very fast velocity. Though I am not really sure about now, but when gremlins used to chain dodge, Valiance was the best gun against them. Now though, it changes with the dodge cooldown nerf on gremlins, but it used to have an extremely useful specialized use :)
Neutralizer - Liquifies zombies, so a specialty use on zombies.
Then there are normal swords like Calibur / CIV that swords people could argue have their uses.
A bomber or gunner, who wants one and only one sword for all situations, should probably get Leviathan Blade. Otherwise, I stand by my statement about normal swords. We agree that Levi/CIV's regular attacks are mediocre, and that its charge attack is awesome. But only an advanced player should be spending a weapon slot on this thing, only to use its charge attack, right? And an advanced player has access to an even better charge attack: Fang of Vog.
I confess that I have no 5-star normal guns (I stopped my Valiance at Master Blaster long ago), so I cannot refute you on them. Your argument may apply to some players. But sworders carrying a single gun will usually prefer an elemental gun, right? And gunners have better guns for any situation, right? Maybe a player with a single sword and a single gun wants a normal gun? Maybe bombers want normal guns?
A swordsman will want to take a Polaris, because their usual need for a gun is not on dodgers.
Elemental is only not effective on two families that are dodgers so yes elemental for sure.
In addition, the other family (devilites) fiends that dodge, the Polaris is actually the best gun to use against hordes of them and by far the safest against devilites though they will usually prefer their FF / BTB. So a swordsman can actually whip out their Polaris to use against devilites as well as everything that is kitable.
And of course Polaris is great on gun puppies, so Polaris for a swordsman is pretty much a given unless someone really prefers the alchemer charge attack on gun puppies.
Bombers will not have a problem with dodgers because I hear they love using DBB against devilites, wolvers, etc. Nitronome / Ash is easily used against kitable monsters. Their final problem would be gun puppies.
The pure bomber would take a RSS for gun puppies, then the non-pure bomber would take Polaris for gun puppies.
So pretty much Polaris as a sidearm which looks like it is confirmed. I think it is safe to say Polaris is the best sidearm, even though I don't like the word best but yes
The-Rawrcake, who is the target market for normal guns? I mean, for whom is a normal gun the best gun to get? You are being too gracious and agreeable. :)
Only pure gunners should get normal guns.
Bombers / Swordsman will want to get a Polaris.
sry for late reply
Personally, I am a swordie at heart. Why, yes I use four swords, and am happy about it.
DA, BTB, Silent Nightblade, and DVS all the way.
Most of the time, I need nothing more. Except on a good Vana run, when I take out the slag guards and have nothing much to do because I can't reach Vana through the layers of fireballs.
So yeah, I'm looking at getting a Blitz so I cam take part in the fun. Okay, mostly because after a good run I got told that I should get a gun, and was then gifted a Blitz Needle recipe.
Really though, that's the one place where I want a gun, and on most runs I'm busy enough keeping slags off teammates and mopping up shadow fire that I wouldn't have much time to be attacking Vana anyway.
The-Rawrcake, I didn't expect that answer. So suppose I'm a pure gunner, with piercing, elemental, and shadow guns. I have a fourth weapon slot for a normal gun. Under what circumstances would I use it? You're saying these two?
* Supernova on gremlins (rather than Umbra/Biohazard)?
* Neutralizer on zombies (rather than elemental)?
i find a mix of weapons is usually the best way to go (especially if u solo a lot). if u only have 2 slots then personally i would suggest getting an elemental gun, a shadow sword or gun and a piercing sword, then just pick whichever 2 are best for the stratum. i dont suggest a piercing gun purely because its my personal opinion that enemies weak to piercing are best taken care of with a sword. likewise i dont recommend getting an elemental sword at first (emphasis on 'at first') because enemies weak to elemental are usually the ones u want to shoot at, i.e. turrets. whether u choose a shadow sword or gun is entirely up to ur personal taste as both are effective.
my personal loadout for general use usually consists of 1 bomb (Electron Vortex), 1 gun (Polaris) and 2 swords (out of Acheron, Divine Avenger or Barbarous Thorn Blade). i tend to mix this up depending on my mood
Neither...
Cutter isn't the best, and if you going full sword you need multiple special damage types. It would be better to have something like Nightblade and Flourish, or Elemental Brandish and Flourish
Autogun isn't a gun that is reliable. It's immobility is difficult to work with it. The Blaster is a swordsman sidearm, not a gunslinger weapon. If you want to gunsling, you need an Alchemer of your choice and probably something like a Magnus.
