What would it be?
I mean, we have the voice chat, the steam mask and... ???
What would be the best part of associating your account into steam FOREVER?
The true advantage of STEAM?
Steam itself? It's a nice service and I'd rather have all my games managed by the same thing.
"Nothing"
Steam isn't needed for SK anymore. (now that I joined :3)
I can think of a few...
1) I can yell at my friend's on steam without alt+tabbing
2) Steam Trade: Sold my unused TF2 crap and scrap for like 2k CE
3) Valve is awesome
So there is nothing that compensates the need of having a program running on background ALL the time?
I like being able to add money to my steam wallet. I mean I would rather see 1 transactions hit my bank account instead of 24 transactions. Unless you can now manage your quantity when purchasing CE and I just haven't figured it out yet.
Also the voice chat feature is lots of fun as well~
Voice chat is really a huge boost when playing with your friends, so you can plan things out better, and also shoot the breeze while actually playing.
Oh also, I log into steam when I turn on my computer and exit it right before I turn it off. I use it to chat with friends. It's not a negative part of anything for me.
"So there is nothing that compensates the need of having a program running on background ALL the time?"
Except for the actual functionality of the program itself. You can do more with it besides playing Spiral Knights you know.
@Mirmulnir: I've been playing on a laptop that has suffered from several Virus-pocalypses in the past, yet Steam running in the background doesn't slow me down. Yes, I've tried downloading the game as well and playing via that, but there isn't much of a difference.
Going to Task Manager and setting Java to High Priority had like 10x more of an effect than downloading/installing it outside of Steam.
I love using Steam and hardly consider buying a game that isn't on it. I started SK way before it was on Steam, but when they added it to Steam, I jumped on it. Aside from being disappointed there is no 64-bit java support on the steam version (64-bit version of java runs SK much faster), everything else has been great. That is to say, I like it on Steam because I use Steam a lot.
If you are still one of the folks who considers actually "having to run Steam" then I see no compelling reason to use Steam for you. I don't consider it an extra program to load up (I also have a computer that isn't running on a hamster wheel, so it doesn't hurt my computer's performance to leave it running 24/7). I like having the Steam overlay, friends list knowing what I'm playing, Steam trading, and so on. If none of that entices you, then there should be no reason to convince you further. Just don't link to Steam if it isn't for you.
Getting interested.
How does steam trading works?
Does Steam voice chat have a push-to-talk feature?
I like it just becasue it keeps SK in my Steam library, along with my other games. It's just nice to have all your games togetehr in a single platform client rather than scattered across your comp. It also lets you shift+tab to open up your steam social window, it gives voice chat options and lets you see when other steam players log on to SK, before they even log on in game, which is handy if you don't have them listed, or they've never played it before.
Fact is, that there's no real reason to NOT have it bound to steam either. The only problem is that if steam is down, you have to take a roundabout route to log in game, but beyond that it's not as if not having it on Steam is gunna benefit you any more than having it on Steam.
Steam trading is as simple as trading in game. You just open up a trade in steam and you can throw anything in the trade windows (that's not untradable/bound, ofc) and trade it there. There's very little reason to use steam trading for SK~SK items though, it's more along the lines of trading your SK items for vouchers or other steam games or items.
There is an option to turn on PTT, and you can leave it off, or you can turn off voice chat altogether.
Steam trading lets you trade SK items for anything in your Steam inventory and vice versa. I've used it a few times to trade items without friends without loading up the game. Saved a few seconds I guess. Honestly though, if you don't use Steam for anything else, it doesn't make a lot of sense to install it JUST for Spiral Knights. I use Steam to launch all my games and I have a small Friends list so I also use it to chat, so I have no problem running a program that uses very little memory in the background all the time, but it doesn't make a world of difference, it just makes things slightly more convenient.
The best part about steam doesn't really have anything to do with SK in particular.
It's emptying your wallet and burning holes in your credit card every time there's a steam sale.
Nothing
It would keep me from playing SK on my Linux machine :P
