What shield would be best to use there between Grey Owlite Shield, Crest of Almire, and Volcanic Plate Shield?
Shield for Shadow Lair FSC (UFSC)
I kind of prefer my Grey Owlite. I don't tank enough hits from zombies for shadow resist on the shield to matter. I'd rather have it last a bit longer on fire grates or bumping shadow fire to grab mats/pickups (elemental + fire).
Edit: for some reason I didn't notice the "shadow lair" part of the question. I don't have any experience with that.
not sure why you would prefer a grey owlite for UFSC or fsc as there is no elemental dmg in either.
@Cherubrock - I believe the first hit from fire traps is elemental. So you get a tiny bit of benefit if you are trying to walk into fire and pick up items. Also, the gun puppies do elemental, not that any of them are hard to dodge.
Either way, I take my crest of almire to FSC if I want more protection than my BTS provides.
There's very little elemental damage in the levels leading up to him, but Vanaduke himself does a lot of elemental damage--I believe the projectiles in the mask phases are elemental, the fire orbitals in phases 3 & 5 are elemental, and his mace and charge do split normal/elemental. (I assume Shadow Vanaduke is the same, never been to him myself.) It strikes me as really arbitrary and annoying, since you can't change armor before the boss and the rest of the stratum is mostly shadow, but there you have it.
So Owlite vs. Almire is basically a question of whether you're more concerned about the boss fight or the levels leading up to it.
I thought vanaduke mace/charge was normal only. Obviously the fireballs are the same as fire traps and I forgot to mention them, but they are pretty significant.
Indeed Nordlead both the mace and charge are normal only (well, to be exact, the mace is normal/stun/fire, it is important if you want to shield it). But taking Owlite for the boss fight is a good idea if you are struggling with mask phase (less for the fire. You rarely walk into fire with your shield up).
I fared well with Crest, but the guy that had VPS on my team did really well too. The only source of elemental is shadow fire and Vana bullet hell. In UFSC, you have to deal w/ Howlitzer bullets all the damn time, but the main source of damage I found was getting run over by slag guards, though CoA will serve you fine for that too.
Vana himself is the easy bit, I feel. As long as the entire team moves as one, you'll stomp his spine. It's the runup and dealing with a bunch of slag guards and trojans at once that's a nightmare. Our team kept getting pwnt in the final room before Vana trying to deal with 2 guards, 1 trojan, and 2 aggro'd respawning howlitzers. We only had to ce rez on Vana once.
How well can VPS take on a fire Howlitzer compared to CoA?
Less so. Since VPS is pure normal, it's taking the brunt of the shadow damage compared to CoA. On the plus side, VPS will stand up incredibly well to Slag Guard charges and Trojan hits.
I personally like Crest of Almire. It can't stand a direct hit from a Vanaduke mace... but if you are still taking direct hits from Vanaduke when you have acquired the tokens needed to get the Crest in the first place, then you deserve to take a smack to the face.
