I started on making a newbie guide to the game via videos, and of course, the first video is Spiral Knights: Your First Sword (guns and bombs and armour comes second to a new guy, for obvious reasons.)
However, after shooting a video for the Troika, Brandish/Calibur and Cutter (the four 2 star swords that go to 5 star), it became apparent that the default Movie Maker on Windows is beyond terrible. Infact, it can't even crop some clips into a cohesive video. Every couple of moments the playback freezes up, but my commentary continues. Its horrible, and I need a new program. I even tried the older versions, but those just die whenever I try to upload an avi file.
Unfortunately, with the company I worked for going bust just after I came back from a trip to Japan, I don't really have money to spare. What free software (or at most 20-30 pounds) would recommend for video editing?
I need it to:
Split videos.
Place audio at certain points in the timeline.
Not ruin the video quality.
Cheers for any help,

Hey there,
I worked as a video capture/editor for a while but haven't had any formal training, so take this with a grain of salt.
It sounds like what you're doing is fairly simple screen capture + editing without too many fancy bells and whistles. In that case I would recommend Camtasia -- it does screen capture but not super well, so get it for the editing capabilities. The controls are simple to learn and use and there are some functions that could be useful (like zoom/pan). Audio and video can be separated and it takes most common video files (not HD). The exported video quality CAN be a little fuzzy, but overall it wasn't terrible, and I'm sure with some tweaking the quality should be fine.
